No "Gratitude": Seal Bites Rescuer's Hand

- That's a new strategy for entangled seals: hiding among the newborns? She is already a year old, but she is very small, the rescuers could have easily missed her. She got herself stuck in a loop of nylon rope and rescuers Wally and Tony can remove it without any difficulty and the seal can dive back into the ocean and hopefully grow a bit.
Naude's entangled seal needs a bit more work, the entanglement is very deep and they have to use the crocheting hook to lift it out of the seal's flesh. It's painful for the animal, she is trying hard to get away from her rescuers, but she can also feel the sudden relief when she is able to fully expand her lungs again with the first proper deep breath in a long time. Her gratitude is limited and she bites Naude's hand through the rescue net. 🦭

Watching these videos, it's sometimes easy to forget seals are predators, and groups of them have been known to drive off great white sharks. Caution is always a good idea.
Hmmmm ... just wondering if someone had you restrained and unable to move what would you do.
And this seal was injured and probably in pain.
My guess is pretty much the same.
We are not that different.
It is just a survival instinct.
I really wish that I had enough money to send you so that you could get those special gloves. You know, the shark proof ones.
They are only 'predators' for fish. Not people. They get preyed on by orcas. One group held an orca off and you see seals as 'predators'? You might watch more wildlife shows.

It’s weird how they behave like herd animals and run rather than band together and defend themselves. Even against animals like jackals the mother sea lions won’t defend their pups from them even they jackals are a quarter of their size.
I love all the little cuties that just stand around not knowing what's going on, and the ones that run to the guys instead of away from them. 😂
They certainly look adorable. I enjoy their antics, too.
I would get distracted and catch the smallest one for a back rub.

I can only imagine how loud I'd be screaming if I had to endure the pain of one of those deep cut rescues.
A bite wont stop our favorite team from doing their work on the beaches. Just make sure to clean it up if needed. I heard saltwater can help wounds pretty good. ;)

You guys are so efficient and professional that I forget how dangerous working with wild animals can be for you. Thanks for putting yourself at risk to help the seals.
So, those determined seals can bite you guys through any protection, gloves, Kevlar sleeves, whatever, even when they are still in the net and even when you think they are under control. I'm glad most of them choose not to...Stay safe!🦭🙏😊

Just another day at the office! :-) I'm actually surprised this doesn't happen more often. After all, it's difficult to protect your extremities when you can't even see where the critter's mouth is! In any case, it's always reassuring to see the crew's professionalism. The seals are in good hands.

Your Seal Dream Team is just amazing. Despite getting bitten you never let the seals feel abnormally comfortable around humans. Sometimes they seem to understand sometimes they don’t but no matter what you don’t get close or create relationships with any of the seals. It’s the greatest hero’s that get no recognition from those they save. Thank you for your incredible work.

Not rabies, but infection from mouth bacteria or tetanus might be a concern.
Look up seal finger. Seal bites can cause a dangerous infection.

Those little newborns knew they were supposed to be running somewhere, but had no idea where! Funny to watch them in their confusion. And that gazelle taking off after that youngster!
