  • This video explores the phenomenon of self-deception, first in terms of the lies we tell ourselves about our inner darkness, and then in terms of how we evade the brilliance of our inner potential.
Here's a table of contents for the material in this video:
    0:35 - Lying to ourselves
1:47 - The small lies we tell ourselves
2:38 - The censored chapter of our lives
3:40 - When we can't handle the truth: The parts of ourselves we hate
5:19 - Projection and the psychology of insults
6:23 - The quest for superiority over others
8:58 - The Jonah Complex: Evading the brilliance of our inner fire
9:50 - Assuming responsibility for our deeper possibilities
12:18 - Fear of being misunderstood and rejected
    14:48 - Fear of annihilation
    17:05 - Paths toward self-honesty
18:58 - The illusion of ultimate truth

I think one of the most frequent and heaviest ways people lie to themselves is when they tell themselves they are stupid or a bad person or unworthy.

    • @ericdodson2644
      @ericdodson2644  5 років тому +5

Yeah, that's definitely a way of entering into the whole Jonah Complex dynamic. Part of the trick to understanding it from a psychological perspective is to appreciate what we get out of doing that. And of course, in the case of the Jonah Complex, telling ourselves that we're stupid and unworthy serves as a pretty effective deflection from the terror of having to acknowledge the opposite reality. If we're constantly telling ourselves that we're stupid, then we never have to shoulder the burden of assuming responsibility for our unacknowledged intelligence, talent, worthiness, etc. We never have to endure the uncertainty and hard work of striving to fulfill our potential for all of that... mostly because we've already condemned ourselves ahead of time. Anyhow... I hope your recovery is continuing to go well. Health! Eric D.

Thank you very much for the video! I'd like to give you a few points of Feedback:
    - Firstly, i really like you beard :)
    - You can make a little pause when you show the roadmap (no need for the 'just leave it up for a few more seeeeeconds) :P
    - I think it might help if we had a little version of the Roadmap to always know, where we are in the video (That is what they tell in my courses on e-learning anyways)
    - The questions you raise and the answer are great to keep the attention and make the video much more easy to follow
I hope you get some valie out of the comment. Have a great day, sir :)

    • @ericdodson2644
      @ericdodson2644  5 років тому +1

Well, thanks for the suggestions, Maxiking. First, there's already a version of the roadmap in the description section of the video (along with links to the timestamps), so viewers can refer to it at any point while they're watching. Also, the main reason why I say the roadmap is going to be up for a few seconds is to give viewers a warning to pause the video if they're not done reading. If there were just dead silence then, viewers wouldn't have a clue about when the roadmap was going to disappear. Anyhow, I'm glad that the questions and general pacing of the video held your attention, and made it easy to follow. One of the main things I'm striving for in these is accessibility, especially given the relatively intellectual nature of their content. So, it makes me happy that you found it to be that. And finally... yeah, my wife likes the beard, too... Have a great day, and thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Eric D.

Sir, your video was really helpful and cleared a lot of doubts that I had, I've been seriously struggling with procrastination and i still remember that if an important exam is a month away or a day away, I would find myself doing, watching, eating or doing anything but studying. Then I feel into trying or I should say acting masculine watching these thrillers with men of such will power, mental strength , etc....I don't know why I told you that. I've seriously fucked up and my whole life is crashing down even though I know about it evetytime yet I just somehow keep procrastinating.

Happens to a lot if not most people. I had an amazing life . Then my brother died and step dad and ... a lot of people in a short amount of time. I had a nervous breakdown of sorts. Since then my entire life is different . Went from 10k a month to 0 a month living with my mom. I feel just stuck. Like life is going on and here I sit . Living in the past . Not doing anything to help myself then wondering why I’m stuck. I don’t have the answer but I think it’s always helpful to know others do and feel how you feel. Knowing what needs to be done yet not doing it. Possibly some form of self sabotage ??

@@CzechRiot I have been surrounded by trauma my entire life. Let's say that everyone is an egg. And when an egg is boiled too long it's going to crack. Some sooner than others .. some bigger cracks .. some smaller cracks .. that's what happens to people . When there is too much trauma we eventually crack. Not everyone but a lot of us do. So when I had to pull my sister off of my dead brothers body as she screamed he just wants me to hold him.. and watch my mom kiss him goodbye in a body bag in the living room . I started to crack . A month and a day later I saw my uncle dead on a sidewalk covered in blood as my aunt screamed " there is so much blood .. blood is everywhere !" Then my friend was murdered . My step dad died of cancer. Went blind and was screaming our names . My younger cousin died . Shall I go on? Because not one year has gone by in 15 yrs. Without something . This last year my dear friend I love so very much was murdered . By her boyfriend . This is all in 3- 4 months cousin was killed on site at the construction company he owned . Hit in head died in his sleep that night. 4 kids and a wife left behind. Then my cousin hung himself with 2 zip ties in the front yard. So yes my brother dying is what cracked the egg. You haven't heard half of it. So I drank I did drugs I became violent and angry and wanted the pain to just stop . Then I went numb. Even worse . I've done a lot of work to get where I am. And I have a lot more work. I haven't met one person who is an addict who hasn't been through trauma . Kid I helped stay clean. And get his life back. Saw his best friend commit suicide in front of him. Shot himself in the head at 14 shortly after he started using . Guy I just talked to yesterday. Him and his two cousins were boxing In backyard. Cousin hit the other cousin . Killed him instantly. Both survivors started using. I hope I answered your question . I may have rambled lol I just want people to understand . Addiction and suicide come from a place of pain and wanting it to stop. I don't think most people want to die . They just want the pain to end . And sometimes thats the only option they can see. Also they have no hope. And unfortunately you can't give somebody hope .

De acuerdo con mi experiencia: ¿POR QUÉ NOS DECEPCIONAMOS DE NOSOTROS MISMOS? Varias razones:
Regularmente no estamos tan satisfechos. Por ejemplo, estar casado, tener hijos, cierta cantidad de dinero en el banco…
    • Especialmente el período entre los 40 a 60 se hace importante (Generatividad vs estancamiento).
    • ¿QUÉ HE LOGRADO?

Just sit there to contemplate it all after you come back because you're gonna see such
crazy and radical things in these trips. That when you come back you're gonna be like what the fuck was that? And you're gonna spend a week just in the shower, what the fuck was that? Cooking your food, what the fuck was that? Driving to work, what the fuck was that? Sitting at work doing your work, what the fuck was that? Thinking that. Trying to wrap your mind around it. Try to remember and trying to figure it out and that's a very valuable process.
