7:59 it's called screen bleed and it's when the casing of an LCD screen breaks and the liquid inside goes into the inside of the screen and oxidizes, it turns black in air and tends to spread over time

My younger cousin died last month in a bad car accident, and he left me his gaming rig. Somehow he literally BENT the external hard drive bays and part of the case above the pcie expansion slots to get a 5700xt red devil to fit into his ancient mATX case that is so old it has a firewire port. For those wondering specs, everything else was modern (msi b550m pro-vdh wifi amd r7 5700x powercolor red devil amd 5700xt and 700w bronze corsair psu) but the case (Microfly Ultra) is old af and it surprisingly works well for the odd setup. I may have to transfer the components to a bigger case and use that ancient case as a server. I wish UA-cam would let you comment pics just to show you the insanity of this case

He's being criticized because of some 2020 drama and the bad framerate the game had in debug builds lol.
The Rorschach effect on screens is because they use LCDs or liquid-crystal displays, once the screen breaks they stop reacting to signals and emitting light, this is why the black clumps all look liquid
This is of course not accurate for every screen and model, and I am not sure which ones appear in the video

As a bit of a tech nerd, I just clicked to feed my masochism. You did not disappoint. I think that rorschach test effect on iPads is a result of an LCD display getting damaged. And at 13:27 isn't that what happens when you take out your computer's RAM while it's running? I swear, that looks just like a picture taken of a computer screen after having the RAM taken out while active, which is a physical representation of your computer screaming in agony while you rip out part of its brain while it's still awake.

The "goopy" cracks are what happens when you break an OLED cluster. Basically they actually bleed, but since they can be individually addressed the rest of the panel continues to function as though the bleeding diodes were still alive

8:37 for the non tech people, a resistor basically makes it so that your electrical circuit doesn't go boom and/or create fire as soon as you turn the power on. It has a material inside that 'resists' electricity so you're not putting too much energy into the thing you want to turn on. Too much electricity is why you see light bulbs explode.
I would love to hear Lexi cover a different sub but at the same time her love of IT and ability to keep us entertained even if we have no idea what we're looking at is truly fascinating

I'm just wondering how hard that kid was hitting if he managed to break the iPad that badly! If I did that I'd never ever hear the end of it, either for hitting my sister or breaking the tablet. IPads are rated for light DONKs at best, preferably not with the screen side

As someone who has had to solder for multiple class projects, 9:15 is painful. Like I know it's only 1.2k (It looks like a brown, red, black, brown with a 10% tolerance), but please people just buy a stand with the little clampy hands. It'll save you so much time.
hey there! general Apple tech here - iPad LCDs and digitizers are separated, and, hence, actually have a bit of a gap between them, rather than iPhones combined LCD and digitizer. on older iPads, when broken, rather than having the screen freak out and display funky colors, the LCDs just. stop displaying the pixels, causing The Goop(tm), with additional digitizer failure

7:35 Prior to OLED, we had backlit LCD screens. When those screens break, the liquid crystal (LCD stands for liquid crystal display) leaks from the pixels, causing the "ink patterns." Calculators also use LCD (but minus the backlight, so no colors, and with substantially larger cells) and smashing its screen will cause a similar effect

11:30 The sad thing about Toshiba is they were _briefly_ a great laptop company then something changed and they became horrible. They were one of the first companies to put a USB drive on their machines. You couldn't even *buy* USB devices yet but the laptops they sold had the ports. Their customer service was downright freaky. We were living in China and Toshiba somehow *tracked us down* and gave my dad a gift card because many of the zip drives on that model were defective and that line of drives was recalled. For the record, ours was not one of the bad ones. It worked fine. It was a few years later that there was a change and they spiraled downhill. Sadly as we were in China and this was the year 2000 we didn't have a way to actually _spend_ the gift card. Net loss of zero though.

thank you lexi for having the correct opinion on hp computers. i have 2 identical hp laptops and they are both the worst laptops i have ever had the displeasure to use. for some reason, hp thought it was perfectly fine to have only 32 GB of storage on the laptop, 20 GB of which is taken up by windows 10.

14:33 I had a Microsoft phone, one day I went into a shop with it and when I came out I checked it and the screen was cracked, never figured out how it did that one. Still works just fine other than the cracked screen, although now I use an LG G8. It was a one of them Nokia / Microsoft phones, in a draw somewhere, should probably find it and take the battery out just in case as I was unaware of phone battery’s being such a problem before. Also talking about software issues as I was writing this comment my iPad turned off saying it was on 5% then when it came back on which was a second later after it turned off and I put the cable in it’s now saying it’s at 26% so that’s strange.
from 2015 to 2017, my windows vista held ON. motherboard was partially fried (from a water spill), keyboard wouldn't work, couldn't boot up with the battery inside. Numerous software/hardware problems caused from the spill eventually calmed down; and the keys from by keyboard were taken for the plastic bits that hold the keys and I was using an LG external keyboard.
Had no job at the time so I used what I had and am still impressed it didn't give out at any point until I finally was able to afford a new one and transferred all my files; at one point wanted to give it a viking funeral.
Edit: forgot that two years prior to the spill the fans stopped working and; until the day it was put to rest; it was sitting on a cooling tray with little fans underneath. And years before that (the vista had the power button on the laptop hinge) the laptop had opened and closed enough times to pop out the power button and the power cable ripped the wires, so had to send that out.
The screen at one point gave out due to screen burn after the power button issue but before the spill, sent it off to be replaced. It came back with a screen that was pixelated and blurry. SO back out it went. The vista had a backlit keyboard so I would be able to tell when the motherboard would act up because the back light would turn on.
BTW it was my first computer and I'm treating my current one much better. got a silicone keyboard cover first two weeks after I got it.
It's not even night and I'm exhausted, but hearing Lexi made my day just so much better.

The solder resistor is definitely a shop. You can tell the lead is actually melting (and the actual resistor lead wouldn't), and also doesn't connect properly to the resistors, and you can tell around his fingers where they were originally holding some solder.
I'm pretty sure I know what happened to that RAM! The stick is labeled as DDR3L, and it was most likely put into a DDR3 slot! It doesn't appear as a huge difference (1.5 vs 1.35), but as far as scale, that's outside of a safe margin of error.

These videos finally got me to clean my laptop fans after not really giving it a second thought- While it wasn't a TERRIBLE amount of buildup it definitely looked bad and my laptop will probably be much happier now.

Lexi, the reason for why you would beat up your sibling is to either vent anger (if you're a bad person) or to playfully roughhouse. If you have a sibling who was a bit more rough-&-tumble, this is a pretty good way to wear them out as long as you don't actually hurt them. That said, beating somebody in the head with an IPAD is WAY too far
Yep, one can playfight and one can gently BONK with an iPad (carefully!!) but one absolutely cannot use an iPad as a cartoon-style knock-out weapon without damage to the iPad, sibling head, and/or relationship

8:29 don't crap on Facebook portal, Lexi, it's actually really useful! My utterly tech-incompetent grandma has one, because Skype and zoom were too complicated for her. Hell, even basic iPads with all the functions except the ones she needs (video call--lots of family in different countries) disabled and hidden were beyond her. With Facebook portal, all she has to do now is press the call button. She has yet to break it, or get horribly confused by it. Even with her progressing dementia she is still able to use it. So there is a reason for it, and for it's target market, the elderly who have no tech skills and just want to talk to the grandkids it's actually one of the better products on the market (assuming a basic phone is not an option--which in our case it isn't because oh boy are international calls expensive)

The only true way to truly destroy a drive is to entirely break the disk or to wipe it magnetically, since any amount of the disk can still be read if intact. If this isn’t true, then my class is teaching me lies
