Grace from CT. Started watching last November. My partner is a railfan. I don't think I have a specific favorite. I love his Alsska videos, i liked his take on Bazzman becoming Hobo king. I liked his honesty about his past and I respected his journey. I watched his early videos and found some of them painful to see. But when he finally got it together i was amazed at his awesome knowledge of rr. I like to ride excursion trains but i am not a railfan per se. I loved Shoestring as a person. He had an ability not to take himself too seriously, yet he also understood that his stories could help folks get through the tough times. He tended to be more surprised about 200k+ followers and never let it go to his head. Not sure how he managed that but he did. So i watched Shoestring more bcuz of the man than the trains. I miss him and i miss his videos. I watch other UA-camrs on a variety of interests but none will be able to replace him. He had his own unique place in my heart. And his passing in the manner he did has left a very deep hole. While i never met him in person i feel like I've known him forever. He was a very special person.

    Longview Washington brother!
I'm glad you're the first person I've seen say anything recently about brother Hobo Shoestring.
I never met him I just watched his videos, like a lot of people I respected him and I admired him and felt like I could go with him when he went on his little adventures.
I did leave home when I was 12 years old and traveled around mostly by hitchhiking and a few times riding freight trains.
I did make my way up to Alaska where I was a commercial fisherman for many years. Decades.
Now I'm just an old retired Native American Commercial Fisherman living on the Columbia River.
I know old Shoestring has been here, I find myself stopping and looking for his tags when I leave the house, if I pass a bridge or something close to train tracks, which isn't often.
Whenever I hear a train I think of that good-hearted decent old school American who refused even at the end to be tamed, a true wild hearted, good-hearted gypsy, who went and threw up (regurgitated his last can of tuna, the only food he had to feed a starving puppy he found where he was camped. He kept that dog for a long time and loved him dearly I think he was a German Shepherd, I don't remember the name of the dog but it was killed, ran over by a car I believe.
(Dogs save me in ways that human beings never could brother Matt. I appreciate that story.)
That tells me everything I need to know about old Mr Shoestring
    ❤️ 🐶
    Rest in peace Mark. 🙏
Thank you for taking us with you, I still get up in the morning and watch his videos, always happy to see ones haven't seen yet.
Definitely my favorites are when he's just alone waiting for a train, relaxing, anticipating the next ride, talking about history, train's and birds, wildlife, staying alive, the people he's known and being free.
    Long live the Hobo King!
Thank you for your Service to our country ♥️ 🤍 💙
    🚆 👑 🚂
Thank you Matt, I totally get it brother, I want him back to.
I think he would laugh if you knew I cut off one of my fingers while tied up to the dock, moving hatch covers with my skipper, in Seward Alaska!! I had to fly to Anchorage to have it sewn back on, luckily they're just happened to be a hand surgeon visiting the hospital that day.
    😂 hahaha
    Peace brother 🖤🐺

Favorite videos that come to mind: Shoestring singing Brother Jukebox, his travels to Alaska, Swimming half naked in the freezing cold water... but most of all I loved the Video where he was opening his fan mail and packages!! Just seeing his reactions to how much people admired him and his content-it was so heartwarming. The steak sampler he got from you Matt-he loved it so much, and hearing how he had never eaten lobster in all his travels; those little anecdotes about his life were so fascinating... RIP ❤

Hi Matt. Stamford, CT here (about 30 miles north of NYC). Shoe was just a great storyteller. He'd have insights into the little details of things most people don't notice. Starting with that iconic beard and smooth baritone texas drawl plus no teeth - it was just like listening to an oldtimer out of central casting in an old hollywood western. He was just a character. I really loved his sense of humor. He'd often find the lighter side in some of the mistakes he made. That was a great quality of his to be able poke fun at himself. Also he was very humble which is what ultimately endeared me to him. The video I like most is the one at a lake in Alaska where he's trying to save $8 for taking a shower at a truck stop so instead he decides to try to bathe in a lake. He jumps into the lake from a boat ramp and winds up neck deep in mud at the bottom. Then he swims to what he thinks is a ladder to climb back on the dock but then he realizes it has arm rails but no stairs. Turned out to be a safety rail for boaters. The whole video is hilarious but scary too. Cause after he jumped in the lake you lose sight of him for 10 seconds and start to wonder if he can swim or he drowned. Then he shows back up on camera and goes on a riff about what a hair-brain idea the whole thing was. It's classic Shoe.

My favorite video from Mark was all of them, His free spirit and desire to travel kinda like me, I drove 18 wheelers for 35 years, got see America at the Company's expense. Mark was just an awesome adventurer. If I had to pin point what areas, Alaska, Rocky Mountains, and Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina are probably a few places, his pictures of those areas could have won him many picture contests. Mark was an awesome man, and he left this world too soon, I miss him and every time I see an open Boxcar: " I would say Hobo Shoestring you in there?" A favorite video? That is difficult. I enjoyed Shoestring's videos with all elements in various ways. The riding was cool and he certainly posted some very beautiful scenery from the line as the train rumbled on...
...But Shoestring's charisma, as you said, to hear his stories, telling his thoughts, giving advice, education, and his humor; that really draws a person in. I like a variety of riders, hobos, or even railroad enthusiasts but Shoestring really stood out from all the others with his own persona, character, charisma.
Alaska trips were always good. I remember a video of Shoestring walking around that sea plane base at Anchorage. And a view of the huge mountains in the distance with this huge valley in the foreground with a massive river flowing.
And a video in the lower 48, I cannot remember where exactly but I'm thinking near Minnesota or Iowa, when he is trying to go south but there was the chance the train would not cross over and he'd have to repeat the loop. Shoestring said something like "If the train starts going away from that track, that means I'm fixin' to start cussin'" lol I got so tickled at that. Oh how I miss him.

Some pain is beyond description including a grieving parent. My daughter has been gone almost 12 years. I can share that but other details, certain days, the raw ache never leaves you & something's simply hurt too deeply to go into detail. Some things are & should remain private if that's what a grieving parent chooses. I never felt the urge to know more than he shared because I know how painful it can be. Also some memories are held so close & private to your heart & that's as it should be. I simply saw a dad who loved & adored his son & grieved always for him. I get that & respect not needing to know more than he chose to share.

I only discovered shoe strings videos a little over a year ago. I guess my favorite ones are of him riding and explaining railroad operations. When I was a kid I had an uncle who was a yardmaster at the Erie Lackawanna railroads Hoboken New Jersey freight yard. He would take me to spend days with him at the railroad, and I would often get to ride on the locomotives with the crew . It was a kid's dream. And I still enjoy watching trains. Although I have spent my adult life in a segment of Aviation, the skydiving industry as a parachute center owner, parachute rigger, and instructor. But there is still a warm spot in my heart for trains. I learned of you through Mark's videos. Through his videos, Mark came across to me as a unique soul and a really good guy. Have to say my favorite is the video when he rolled out in the woods near the Cleveland Browns training facility between the CSX and NS mains in Berea, Ohio. He had some footage walking down Bagley Road and crossing over the Rocky River and asked with kid-like curiosity "what river is that?" I remember leaving a comment to him in that video that it was the Rocky River. A bit later he met you at the Arby's down the street. I think that may have been the first time you met? Maybe I'm mistaken. I live down the street a couple miles in Middleburg Heights. Now I think of Shoestring and you every time I pass that way - a couple times a week. Thanks for that specific memory and for sharing these videos Matt. The main thing I liked about Shoestring was he was excited about seeing new places and having new experiences. That came through in most of his videos. The impression I got from him was that he appreciated being able to get out and do this. I do know it was very very hard to live this way, especially with his chronic health issues - not everybody could do this. I’m grateful to have it. He passed shortly after he sent it to me. I may have said this before but even though I never knew him, I miss him. Thanks for this video Matt. Take good care of yourself man. Much love.

Great to talk about your friend Shoestring amoung watching your videos.. for starters Shoestring let me to your channel long before he'd two up with you on video ☺️. I'm watching from Sydney Australia Matt. Best Ride to Ohio comes mind for a favorite riding video, his story telling and general monologues on random stuff never bored me at all and you guys catching up on the ferry and showing him around your neck of the woods was great... UA-cam is not the same without him and it's going to take me a while to go back watching Shoestring repeats again in lieu of his passing... Always good to here you want to talk about him and thanks for your videos to mate as I look forward to them whatever they be 👍👍

Hello Matt. Just subscribed to your channel. First off, glad you had the opportunity to spend some quality time with Hobo Shoestring a.k.a (Mark Nichols). That is something that will remain with you forever. Did not take long to subscribe to his channel as well. I was amazed on how much he knew about trains and their destinations. Even better, turns out he was a US Army veteran. Wish he would have stayed the course. They say being in the military, you will find some good fun, travel and adventure. I am also a vet and I live in Germany. But he took adventure to a new level. He enjoyed what he was doing. RIP Hobe Shoestring and thank you sir for being his friend.

Northern Ohio here & traveled literally everywhere in the United States & Canada as a profession. Among my favorite Shoestring vid's is a more recent one of his titled "High above the rail yard! (Helper, Utah). Man, I miss that place. & Yes, I've been there. Other vid is prolly one of Shoestring visiting his dad. He spoke quite a bit in his other vid's about his family (if anyone paid attention). 👍

I'm watching from Clarksville Tn. and I subscribed to your channel directly from Shoestring's recommendation. Hard to pick a favorite video, the ones I like the most are when he is telling stories and others where he's just recording on the ride and not talking are the ones I tend not to watch as much but that's not that they are bad don't get me wrong I do like them but the others I just like more. Man it's a bummer he's gone, I only discovered Shoestring maybe 6 months ago. I purchased a coffee mug and a shirt from his website before all of this happened and better believe they will be treated like gold now.

His recent camping video with his friend, Gibb. When he first met Jaw Tooth. The Wyoming ride where he tricked the cows into thinking it was feeding time. My favorite Shoestring videos were his Alaska ones, especially when he was alone on the Alaska Highway in the dead of winter and while he was on the ferry. I’m from a small town called Salisbury, NC. Neighboring town of Spencer has the old Southern Railway shops which is now the North Carolina Transportation museum which is really cool. Town of Salisbury was chosen for the SR facility because it’s exactly half way between Washington DC and Atlanta GA on the mainline. It was really important for locomotive service back during the steam era. Great grandad, grand dad, and numerous great uncles all worked there most of their life. Salisbury is the home of the grocery store chain Food Lion, and Cheerwine a unique cherry soft drink that’s been around for over 100 years. Also Stanback headache powders , similar to Goody’s is also a Salisbury NC company . Just some history of my little home town that I thought you may be interested in. I enjoyed most all of Shoestring’s videos but always enjoyed the ones with all the tunnels when traveling through Tennessee and NC, or the Virginia area. Thanks for your videos remembering Hobo Shoestring and keeping his legacy alive. Take care and have a great weekend !

Hey Matt, Toronto Canada but i grew up across lake erie from you in a small railroad town. Never knew anything about it until Shoestrings videos. I do remember hobo camps they called them in the woods but i never knew what a hobo was, i thought it was homeless but i didnt understand why homeless people lived in the woods by the railroad tracks. Yeah i was that ignorant to the whole thing, now I want to catch out from my hometown sometime see where it takes me. It used to be a major hub back in the day, i think the biggest hub in Canada at one point theyre claim to fame was, but once the highway was built northof the town i think thats what stopped the train traffic. And the town north of us grew because of it while ours stayed small. I wondered if Shoestring every came through that yard i later found out was named Cosmo Yard. Its where Jumbo the elephant, a PT Barnum and Baily elephant was killed on the tracks. They were trying to move him and a surprise train came and he just didnt want to go and got hit is the story. That elephant rode the rails all across north america apparently, probably as many miles as Shoestring, but it wasnt free, a show piece, the biggest elephant in the world traveling with a circus. I sometimes wonder if the Elephant knew the train was coming and just said im done with this lifestyle. Anyway I digress, my favourite videos were all of them! But i like the hobo ride selection one. He really seems in his element and happy.

    Hey Matt,
I'm Mike from Burlington Ontario, up here in Canada. I've commented with you before.
I guess I hopped onto Shoestrings train 6 years ago when I came across his video, "Explaining air brake systems while we wait."
I'm thinking who's this old kook, and what's up with him?
    Lol,
I watched every one, and waited patiently for the next, everyday since.

Oh, and on a side note about that video of you and him with your CN rail speeder..... here in Burlington we have a major junction and station where they used to store a few of those back in the early 80s.
That was the train watching Hotspot with my dad, and that speeder video reminded me of it

Fav shoestring vids, that’s tough, the Alaska stuff was pretty amazing, anything through West Virginia or mountainous areas, and of course you always hope to see something local, I’m sure that sentiment probably stands for a lot of viewers.

Beckville, TX. 26 miles from Marshall TX. Took my work lunch break several times at the Marshall Train Depot parking lot, close to the yard. Hoping to see Shoestring on one of his trips to Marshall. I Took a picture of the signal box he tagged in one of his videos.

Hey Matt watching from Northeast Ohio not too far from you. I loved Mark's Alaska videos. I've never been there and I felt like I was getting a personal tour watching his videos.
I loved his riding videos as I got to see places I've never seen before but one video that I love was when he made a Thanksgiving video of things he was thankful for.

I miss him like anything. He was such a kind and humble soul. He meant the world to me.
Thanks for these videos about Shoestring. They help me a lot. They bring me peace because know Im not alone in grieving his loss and love hearing how much he affected others lives. As long as we remember him, he will never be truly gone.
God bless you Matt and take care
