    I tried the same method on applying copper inlay to a candle holder. After a trip to the emergency room (couple of bruised fingers, no permenant damage) I remembered to turn down the speed of the lathe on my second attempt. Turned out very nice. 16ga copper wire makes a mean weedeater at 3200 rpm.

    It would really ease up the inlay work if you anneal the copper first, makes it very soft and more workable. You have to get the oxide layer off, though, but this can be done by pulling it through a piece of emery or scotch pad.

    • @peterbrownwastaken
      @peterbrownwastaken  9 років тому

      sthenzel That sounds great. I'll have to look up annealing copper. It's not bad to work with cold, so I imagine it would be even better!

    • @sthenzel
      @sthenzel 9 років тому +1

      Just heat the copper, preferrably until it has a faint red glow, doesn´t need to be fully red hot and then let it cool slowly.

    What if you used copper as a "spline"? You can drill through the joint and insert the wire and glue it in place. That would leave copper "buttons" visible on both sides of the joint. Maybe try it out next?

    I wasn't a fan of the Christmas tree wire inlay you did. This felt much more natural, and a great improvement on the proof of concept. I'm kind of excited to see you use a greater variety of metal inlays, or possibly treat the copper so it oxidizes green.

    Neat stuff, it makes me want to convert some line art, run it on the cnc router and do some copper inlays. I'm usually doing mechanical stuff on it, so something artistic would be different to try. What type of wood does copper look best with though, I'm sure it's all relative, but some kind of general guide would help :D
