- I grabbed a box I made from a couple years back and experimented a bit.
It's only wood, and for me the fun of the shop, is having fun in the shop...

I tried the same method on applying copper inlay to a candle holder. After a trip to the emergency room (couple of bruised fingers, no permenant damage) I remembered to turn down the speed of the lathe on my second attempt. Turned out very nice. 16ga copper wire makes a mean weedeater at 3200 rpm.
Designs By Philip Sweet Mercy!? I'm glad you are okay. I would love to see the completed holder. Sounds really cool!
That looks great Peter, I like to try new things too!
Carl Jacobson Thank you! Do you talk to yourself too? Say it's not just me... :)
Peter Brown It OK as long as you don't start answering you self.....:)
Split screens are fun! Nice project too, I like incorporating the copper like that,
Darbin Orvar Thanks Linn! I really wanted to see if I could get a better split screen! Opens up some other editing doors :)
I've found it hard to time each recording right (dialogue wise) without too many cuts. Yours was very smooth!
Darbin Orvar Thanks! If you want a cringefest, I did a horrible one in my TRON video. I should just delete it.
3.12am, can't sleep, go on YT and this video pops up. Excellent, I'm off to buy CA glue and epoxy because you gave me an idea.
Best Wishes, Brendan.
baconsoda Sweet! I love that feeling! Good luck with the endeavour!
Thank you for these videos. My Dr. told me to get a hobby to help with the stress in my life. I chose to take up wood working, the way you handle things when they take a turn helps me not burn down my shop.
I was really worried part way through this video, but I'm really impressed with how it came out.
Punk Rock Jesus Nice Username
funny! love it!
jimmydiresta Thank you Jimmy! That means a lot to me!
i love the new look of the box
I love these old videos with two peters. You're hilarious
I love it! Copper is my favorite
I'm more of a Rutherfordium person myself
Nothing wrong with a little Up Cycling , Looks Great Peter
***** Thank you!
So funny! way to go Peter that was great
Love it man
***** Thanks!!
Good for you man. Great outlook on life and the way you represent your channel. Keep it up!
Cool idea to revisit and old project and change it up. Love the copper stuff you're doing.
Steve Carmichael Thanks! It's great for adding accents! I fear this means I'm going to have to do something serious next... :)
I was always told its not good when you start to talk to your self. :) You doing a great job at the video magic .. keep it up I like to see something diff from time to time.
Custom Chris Crap, I'm in trouble. I talk to myself all the time...
I think the box is even more beautiful now with the copper :) Great idea, keep it up!
You make me want a woodworking shop soooooooo badly!!!!!!!
I love that little box. Very Doug Stowe. I liked the copper. Keep it coming.
Jim Fancher Thanks! Doug Stowe's book was my box making bible! Talk about a ton of creativity! :)
I love his stuff. I'm a bit of a fanboy. I have everything I could find with his name on it. I even looked into taking a class with him. Do more boxes!
Well done Peter. Looks great.
J.D. Ransom Thank you !
Well done dude! That bit at the start was totally worth it!!_+_+_+_+
"you hate it.." lol!
Very interesting way to dress up an original! Thank you for sharing
Rock-n H Woodshop Thank you Drew! I just wanted my old self to relax a bit. He's kinda uptight at times... :)
Cool accent Peter,
I like the randomness because so much of what we do is precise.
Regards,
Bob
RJBWoodTurner Thanks! That's one of the reasons I love woodturning so much. It can be, "whatever" you want!
Well done Peter :) Really liking the copper stuff you've been making!
Peter Matthew Thank Peter. Copper is a fun medium to work with!
I am so jealous of your workroom!
very cool idea, thanks for sharing, its always nice to see something new.
TabLeft Thank you for watching!
I like your humour.... You woodworking leaves a little to be desired..... but so does mine... Great work trying something new...
Dollar Bill That's cool, we can get better as we go! Nothing wrong with that!
Absolutely.
Great idea that could open Doors to others things. Thanks for sharing
Mike Fulton Thanks Mike. Copper is really fun to add accents to wood!
Nicely done. It looks great!
UltimateDelivery Thank you!
Very cool Peter. It's always fun to see what you're gong to do next.
Shadetree Woodworking Thank you!
I really want to try this now on a book shelf I'm refinishing. Thanks!
Brian Rathe Le Gurche That would look really cool! If you do it, shoot me a picture!
Good job Peter. I like your creativity.
stephen dickinson Thank you Stephen!
Turned out great Peter. Very cool twist. Ha Ha, no pun intended.
Dave Pelcher Thanks Dave!
I'm so happy I subscribed to this channel.
Heliyum Thanks!!
I like the randomness of the copper. You're right we don't always have to measure and have it all in order. The split screen beginning was fun :) I keep talking to myself but the other me doesn't show up. Not sure why...
AdventuresInDIY Thanks! Both are good, but sometimes I just want to horse around! He's a pain in the rear, always so critical.... :)
Great idea Peter Thanks
Michael Flynn Thanks! Copper is fun to work with!
you should try solder too it turns out great and also super easy to work with and you can get super clean ends by soldering them together before sanding
ducksniffernz Ah... that's too cool. It totally makes sense too! Thanks for the idea!
Here's an idea...cut a section from an old telegraph pole and turn it on the lathe into a vase, and use the copper from the telegraph wires to inlay it.
rlt94 Wow! That would be ambitious! I like the copper inlay idea, but might have to skip the telegraph pole. That's some pretty nasty wood (pressure treated lumber)
Might try this copper thing out some time. I have lots of old scrap cable in my garage somewhere. I was wondering if wrapping it round in a spiral along a dowel might look good?...We shall see. Keep up with the great and inspirational videos.
Ross McLee I could see that looking really cool! I'm glad that I've sparked an idea. For me, that's what is the most fun about making these silly videos...
Wow, I didn't need my drink before this one. Good one.
Lee Waterman Really? I think I might need one... :)
Reminds me a bit of "Kintsugi;" A creative way the Japanese fixed broken pottery with lacquer mixed with powdered gold.
Rouverius Thanks for that! I'll look up Kintsugi...:)
That came out really great!
Cactus Chris Thank you!
If you're still looking for a good mould release for epoxy I've found that if you line the inside of the mould with brown parcel tape the epoxy will just slide out when cured, thanks for all the videos I really enjoy them
Xx_Clawed_xX Cool idea! I'll give it a shot! Thanks for watching!
Peter Brown my name is Sam by the way
if you want the copper wire to be straighter. sandwich it between a board and the table.. apply alot of pressure.. and just push the board back and forth.. it'll work when you feel the wire rolling
+Cameron Caudel Oh. Thanks for the tip!
I like that following the grain bit on the top. Is it okay if I then compulsively follow every grain line on the thing? Because that would feel good.
krtwood I really like the top better than the sides. I think following the grain helps... :)
You're like the Bob Ross of wood working
Anon Maxima Ha! Happy copper trees....
You truly did think outside the box this time!
JimE
blackemmons Thanks! Not too sure about the sides... I do like the top though!
"not everything you do has to be measured with a set of calipers" I think I need to listen to this quote a bit more... I don't think I've ever put the calipers away.
I think it turned out really cute! :D
Rike Malfoy Thanks! I like the top but not the box... :) Oh well!
You do good work, keep making stuff and more videos!
Steve Freedenburg Thank you Steve!
might i suggest that next time if you do this to use brass with walnut, it is stunning
It would really ease up the inlay work if you anneal the copper first, makes it very soft and more workable. You have to get the oxide layer off, though, but this can be done by pulling it through a piece of emery or scotch pad.
sthenzel That sounds great. I'll have to look up annealing copper. It's not bad to work with cold, so I imagine it would be even better!
Just heat the copper, preferrably until it has a faint red glow, doesn´t need to be fully red hot and then let it cool slowly.
Copper inlay always looks good. Ever thought of different metals (or even coloured epoxy) for a range of colours...?
James Gray I've done aluminium in turnings. Adds a really nice pop! I need to get some brass too! I've also had some success with food coloring in epoxy: imgur.com/ujigX83
good stuff, i like it!
Stephan Pöhnlein Thank you!
Nice
Scrap wood City Thank you.
Very cool.
ShavingWood Thanks!
more copper :) looks good i thought you were going to epoxy it as well
well done peter
Robbiethewoodturner Thanks Robbie!
What if you used copper as a "spline"? You can drill through the joint and insert the wire and glue it in place. That would leave copper "buttons" visible on both sides of the joint. Maybe try it out next?
David Willett That would be really cool looking! Great idea!
I wasn't a fan of the Christmas tree wire inlay you did. This felt much more natural, and a great improvement on the proof of concept. I'm kind of excited to see you use a greater variety of metal inlays, or possibly treat the copper so it oxidizes green.
Matt Carstensen Thanks! I'm with you, for me it's about getting to see what is possible for adding to the woodworking. I've been really surprised that it is easier than I expected! I watch a lot of WoodWorks, and David Marks does amazing copper patinas...
Double trouble, this video is. :P Interesting changes. Going to have to ruminate a while before I figure out which I think was better - the old box or the altered box. Doesn't matter what I think though as long as you are happy with it. :)
- Heidi
BlackCat2 I really like the top, but not the sides. Not quite what I envisioned. Oh well, I can easily make another box and try something else! :)
Neat stuff, it makes me want to convert some line art, run it on the cnc router and do some copper inlays. I'm usually doing mechanical stuff on it, so something artistic would be different to try. What type of wood does copper look best with though, I'm sure it's all relative, but some kind of general guide would help :D
TheHouseBlog That would be really cool! Copper really pops against a dark wood but looks pretty good regardless! If you end up making something on the CNC, I would love to see it!
"If you say you want something to be random, you have to be happy when things occur randomly" - yup, that's so hard for the OCD types like myself
Dogwood Tales I really like the top, but not the sides. For the OCD types, a v bit in the router table and riding the work piece along the fence would give you a straight cut!
Peter Brown My OCD doesn't require a thing to be straight, but there are times when I think i need a little more ... randomness (... nah, that's not random looking or random enough ... just a little more ... argh, now it doesn't look right at all ...) At what point does something look "random"? That's the problem I have with my OCD.
Dig it, Peter. I like the experimentation. :)
scrubby4130 Thanks Jeff!
You do all the stuff no one else is brave enough to screw around with, lol. :)
scrubby4130 My life is too stressful to not be laid back in the shop! Saw you hitting Dota2 again last night. I might have to get in there some time!
Make sure you mute everything, it's an unforgiving community, lol.
Great game, just mostly played by douchebags, haha
No calipers??? that's just crazy talk. lol I have some thin aluminum I got when I won a prize in Brian's 2x4 contest, Maybe I should try to put some into some of my old turned bowls or ??? Funny stuff Peter.
woodturningjohn Aluminum cans are a great accent to turned tool handles! I bet it would look pretty sweet on a bowl! :)
The issue I've had with copper inlays is any expansion or contraction tends to pop the ends of the wire loose, at least on small bowls.
Rick McQuay Interesting! I hadn't thought about that. How was the copper oriented in the bowl?
Around the outside of the rim, the worst spot for wood movement.
Rick McQuay Sorry about that, but thanks for sharing. I probably wouldn't have even though about it!
At the intro of the video do y have a twin or a very good editing program ? Thanks
Editting. You can see the seam in the middle of the video if you look close enough.
Has the other you forgiven you yet for messing with the box? Hang on. If this is the other you reading this, have you forgiven you yet. No, wait. Is either of you aware of which one of you is you, and which one of you is the other you?
?????????????? Time for a beer I think.
Symon Fobbester Pour one for me too! No, he hates it! Ha! Honestly I'm not a fan of the sides at all. I think that was a mistake. If I had a do over, I would just have put copper on the top. Like a Duracell... :)
This is genius!
Jeremy Urban Thanks Jeremy
you're always so cute i love your videos
All you need is your own McCoy and you're ready to escape Rura Penthe......
Shannon Fargo It's my life long ambition! Thanks Shannon!
thx bro
what size router tip is that thanks cool idea.
sam witwiky Good question. It's a 1/4 shank v bit. So pretty small...
thanks ime going to try this
sam witwiky That's awesome. Start shallow, you can always take a deeper second pass! Good luck!
thanks
XD YOU ARE YOUR OWN DISSAPOINTED FATHER!!!!
Is there specific peters with different qwerks like the one thats not working is OCD...ish i guess
what is with the stuff you're spraying out of the can, is it acetone, what does it do?
Peter i really enjoyed the project and the video, how hard was it to loosen up the old uptight you, happy holidays to you and yours : )
Ron Sanford Uptight me, still wants to get rid of the table saw and build a Rubo bench... Maybe one day! Happy Holidays Ron!
that would make for a great video series, you really don't seem to use your table saw that much at least on video you could probably make do with your radial and band saw anything else could be covered with a circular saw,i know it's not a out of the box project but i believe you could make it as informative and entertaining as you always do
Fun editing
l3ender15 Thanks! The truth is, this video exists so I could play with the split screen!
Hey Peter, I was wondering where you got the brief case in the background at 3:17. I realise you don't make videos to sponsor brief cases, but I've been looking for one recently. Thanks
+Zaco Cast Those are actually a set of drill bits from Woodcraft.
Oh, haha! Thanks for replying! Just on the lookout for one that's all. I love your videos, keep up the good work!
Mind linking the vlog channel in the descriptions?
Kyle Stonebraker Sorry about that! added...
Can you tell me more about that glue you use to set the wire? What are you spraying on it? Some kind of activator?
I'm not sure but I think he said in another video he uses super glue and a catalyst to harden quick. Something suggested to him.... I'm not sure though lol
+MrD Poling Its CA glue and activator.
Hi Peter, What are you using to instantly set the super glue?
Brandon Farley It's called CA activator www.amazon.com/Fastcap-2P10SOLOACT-FastCap-12-Ounce-Activator/dp/B0006IUWC2
one of these days hes gonna have toi reveal where he came up with the idea for these skits
Psssst... walnut box - brass splines - shhhhhhh...
Hehehehehehe...
Mark Lindsay I really need to score some brass! It's on the list!
I was the thousandth like :))
+Liam Hadley Thanks!
What kind of glue is in the aerosol can?
krssnoop That is accelerator. Hardens the superglue instantly!
sweet
Celmar thank you!
Who is that that has been with you in your shop lately?
kencmain My traditional side...He's not been very happy with me lately! :)
What are you spraying on the ca glue?
Austins Airsoft It's called accelerator, and it's made to cure the glue instantly. It's great if you're super impatient... :)
I love your way $^$
Hailah al-rumaih Thank you!
He uses Resin as hair gel.
Wait till you have a triple personality! Its a pain in the butt!
RG31610 Shop's going to get pretty crowded!! :)
i hate it too..lol
SkunkTreeCarvings I think I'd skip the sides next time...
more intricate design maybe..?
