Always figured they're there for protection - but makes sense there's a point at which they become a problem. More for when dropping the bike when maneuvering I guess - and people probably wouldn't buy "Drop bars" if they were called that.
Mate of mine recently mentioned that by being in a crash with one, you've managed to raise the value of the remaining ones - making them more rare..!!
Good chat mate, thanks for the update.

I have to agree with @outbackoutlaw . They're not there to protect the rider.

I think crash bars are only there to protect the bike when you drop it. They aren’t roll bars. So no they aren’t there to protect the rider in my view at all.

Yup I agree, slow speed tumble or parking malfunction is all crash bars are good for 😊

You've gotta do what you've gotta do to protect yourself, whether you are using the Crash bars to protect yourself, if that's what you've got to do, that's OK.
I am glad that you are all OK and survived and recovering.

OK, my 2c. Crash bars are to protect the bike. They were never intended to protect the rider. It's your job to know when to let go and fly through the air! 🙂

I’ll watch later. Just about to sing some Elvis songs at a gig.

No form of protection is perfect .I crashed my Goldwing at 100kph 2 up , the bike slid in the oil on its side spinning like a top , for a 100 metres . We hit the road like a bag of spuds , biggest high speed crash , I ever had . Yet I rode the bike back home , hundreds of kilometres, never missed a beat .

Normally, they are only good for low speed accidents.

Just bike protection at no or slow speed is what I’ve always thought. And I also wondered if it would pin the riders leg.

With the size of your crash, crash bars or not.. you'd have had a bad time. Yes for a little drop they are saving some money.

The bars will help with dropping the bike and low speed accidents. Especially good at preventing your leg from being crushed. At highway speeds, there's not much besides an airbag vest that's going to help.

This was a low speed accident, no more then 30klms.. and would have been the cause of my leg being crashed if I hadn't lifted it.. but yes definitely a good thing if you drop the bike for sure..

@digbysdownunder I've never been in a crash, thankfully, but the bar bending at 30kmh is definitely unexpected. The tube steel should really be thicker if it bent that easily.

I have to ask you, What does your owners manual say the crash bars are for ?. In my Harley manual it states they are put there to help limit fall damage, and might at the very least provide some protection for the people riding the motorcycle. They won't guarantee they will protect you in the event of a crash.,,

Well have to admit I never read the manual for that lol.. although get your point. And well aware not much will protect you in a decent smash, but this could have made it worse by catching my foot had it still been there.. cheers and thanks for watching..

On my 17 hd fltrxs there is a sticker in the middle of the bar that states just that. @digbysdownunder

How bad are your injuries from the crash. It looks like you are getting up and walking fine. The crash bars did what they were supposed to do. Imagine what it would have been like had those crash bars not been on the bike. Would it have been a lot worse. Even without the crash bars imagine if you didn't lift your foot and it ended up between the floorboard and the engine block smashed even worse. They are there to help in case of an accident not to stop the accident just to help in case of one.

Injuries are bad enough, although not visible my left shoulder and arm are constantly sore, 3 fingers on my right hand are possible permanently damaged.
Yes if I had kept my foot there I would have lost it.. wife has come out worse then me. I do agree there are not there for high impact, thanks for commenting.
