Sam, Glad you received your new stainless steel motor mounts in time for your maintenance. They look great!! Let us know if there's anything we can help with. We're researching manufacturing more parts for Yanmar motors. We mostly manufacture in stainless steel, so making upgraded Yanmar parts is right up our alley! Cheers my friend!!
Don't forget you have to align the drive train now that you changed engine mounts. This is done by loosening the shaft then using feelers to measure the gap as you turn shaft. It is adjusted at engine mount level
Sam, I just wanted to say a quick thank you for inspiring me to get into sailing. I bought a boat this year and I’m loving every minute of it. My background in adventuring was of the 2-wheeled motorcycling variety, but since starting a family that’s not really possible. Sailing and getting out on the water has opened my eyes to the adventures just outside my door, and allows me to enjoy it with my family. My son will grow up learning the joys of the water, and in no small part that’s down to you. Many thanks my dude! From Cornwall, UK.
Great job doing it yourself, chainplates mainsail and yanmar feet. So many don’t and man there goes the budget and the independence spirit. Respect , you’ve come a long long way in so many ways - priceless.. can be fun separating the drive shaft in order to feeler guage the alignment but hey that’s the final and farsighted job!
I believe that you have the right sense of humour for mucking about with boats.. I am thoroughly enjoying mucking around with my own project.. In this mad world that we are living in a project boat keeps me sane!.. lol
Pickled Hering looks great! I bet it was a lot of hard work but you must be happy its done and your back on the water. Be safe my friend, good sailing!🎉⛵
Your level of patience is amazing. Every time I go in my engine compartment the swearing starts and I say I will never do the work again- just pay someone. They never make the compartments the right size.
Your depth of knowledge is impressive and coupled with your can-do attitude and tenacity at tackling any job, your results and progress seem endless. Thanks for taking us along on your adventures!
I cannot tell you how happy I am that you finally fixed that sail. Whatever disorder I have made it very difficult for me to watch you sail your boat with the sail not fully extended....lol. Also, your water line looks great.
Sam, your boat looks great! It's good that you're very handy and can do many jobs on your own. I look forward to watching a season of Sam Holmes Sailing.
typo repair: 26:51 - NOW THAT'S a proper view for when you're taking a break. "CHEERS!" And worth another look. 30:00 - back on the water! Malta might be one of the coolest-looking destinations I've seen on more than one UA-cam sailing channel. Good onya, Sam.
You're an amazingly hard hard worker Sam. I know you cut a lot out but I have some idea of what we didn't see because of your editing, and it was a ton of hard knuckle busting and harsh finger blistering stuff. Hats off.. smooth and safe sailing, good luck!
I love your videos, very inspiring. I'm becoming obsessed with the idea of sailing and have a modest budget but you're showing me that it canbe done with the right level of motivation. I live in the south of england so not such a bad place to start from. I've recovered spiritually/mentally etc from some pretty bad times and now the most important thing is that I enjoy myself a bit over the immediate. Keep doing your thing, you look very happy and I hope life treats you well.
It had a spot come off right after it was launched but the rest has held up for the first month. I might not have prepped properly though. I know that’s important for this stuff. Time will tell.
Its relaxing to watch your videos Sam, your coolness, seeing you swim in the middle of the Atlantic by yourself, tackling the boat issues, etc etc. You and Popeye!, true blue water sailors!
When I sand my antifouling paint I always do it wet, using a sanding pad and paper used for sanding cinder blocks (or breeze blocks for those in the UK) the holes in the paper stop it getting blocked up with paint and the water makes the whole job easier and cleaner. I just wet the surface and then regularly dunk and wash the paper and pad in a bucket of water as I go.
Sam....there are a few things you can do to make your vessel even more reliable....every electrical connection you service...use a wire brush to completely clean all the lugs and once you reinstall them use diaelectric grease to coat them. this will prevent or inhibit future corrosion. also...if you think you have enough, of anything...as far as hose, wire etc, you dont....always allow 20% more. Never skimp out on the little things. take the extra time to completely clean and future proof every single repair/renovation. this will see you into the future much better than just barely getting it done.
The heavy wire from the battery goes on a bell housing bolt. You probably have another heavy cable from the engine to the lightning plate in the bilge, and one or two 10 AWG ground wires from the bell housing to the switch panel for accessory loads. SV Jane Ann, 1979 CD 27
Sitting on my boat watching your video as I change my engine compartment exhaust fan. Much more enjoyable working together. I love spelling back the tape on a paint job, very satisfying
If you ever need to change the motor mounts again, you may find it easier to remove the 2 bolts from the block and the 2 lag bolts from the stringers. Then you only have to lift the engine about a 1/4”. Always enjoy your videos….
@@tesa642 yup, thats a chance you take, but it’s easy to find out. I just replaced mine a month ago and it was easier than getting in there with a grinder and zero risk of fire.
really impressive stuff Sam, much respect and always wishing you the best on all your adventures, you bring us all so much joy and inspiration and fun and educational things to watch, and as others have mentioned your positive attitude is remarkable, thank you... onward!
Enjoy all the work your doing, been watching your travels from the start....prices are dream prices here..San Fran 240 day haul out. 1200 rt crane...I'm saving to haul, change all through hulls, valves, and bottom paint, hopefully before summer is over....fly boarding looked awesome, I follow kite boarding and paragliding, surfing....keep up the interesting travels...Mark and Andrea...
Sam. Electric connectors could do with dielectric grease to stop the connections degradation or corrosion. It's real cheap and worth doing on all your electric contacts. 20:30.
@29:19 Proof that “You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink” 😂😉🤣Not even the Malteser (not the deliciously good chocolate candy) seawater.
Nice job Sam. Have to keep on top of it. Theres always something. Micron is good bottom paint as well although I use Americoat ABC#4 ...its ablative and the boat comes out clean every year.
Sam, great video (as usual) - we also replaced our boat engine mounts a year or so ago. We had a similar issue where the machined bolt was spinning as the thread in the engine bearer was stripped. Although you resolved that, would look at possibly getting a helicoil kit so you can replace threads in future if needed. Keep up the great videos and happy sailing....!
Hi I did the lift method before when changing mounts then I saw the Elebogen engine mounts company who put out you tube on how to change mount pretty cool you just block up under the sump and change em one at a time I'm doing them that way now and it seems quite easy compared to lifting the whole motor
I'd like a mix of sawdust and sand to scrub out a motor compartment, when it gets scuzzy. Vegetable oil mixes with motor oil and lifts it. Then more sawdust, rubbing alcohol, paint. I carve motor mounts, but your small ones look capable.
You got the boot stripe just right, your light at the moment as soon as you load up for crossing a ocean perfect. Those two back engine mounts looked like a case of beer job and a lot of bleeps.
Sam, you gotta get yourself some sandpaper flap wheels in various grits for your angle grinder. Woulda made life a lot easier redoing the bottom paint. Turns the grinder into an angry sander. Cheap too
Great vid as always ❤ you been a big inspiration to me , I’m on my second week sailing from lake hjälmaren down the Swedish east coast to Ystad (next doors to Kåseberga where I saw you did some paragliding) got a few days left before we’re home ! Thanks again for the inspiration ❤
Sam, those engine mounts look identical to the ones on my 1982 CD33. The yanmar ones I’ve seen have a rectangular isolator, not circular. There’s a good chance those are original to the boat and were just re-used when they swapped out the old md7a for the yanmar
Rhubarb Juice or a fresh stick of rhubarb (even better) - Cleans rust of fiberglass, being a natural product it can drip into the water without harm to microlife!!
Interesting. Rhubarb contains oxalic acid (mostly in the leaves), which I've bought in its crystal form as a rust remover. Works good. Also bleaches wood.
Diablo steel demon carbide Sawzall blades will zip through a couple of hardened bolts and not make sparks. Just keep speed slow. The cheap bi metal blades not so much. Just a possible future solution. Cheers!
Changing engine mounts are a huge pain, did it once, it was terrible. I'll have to do it again someday, and I'll just tell myself 'Sam did it without problem'! The corroded bolts that hold the mounts themselves in-place were my problem, the bolt-heads broke off.
The patience one has to have for boat and especially engine upkeep is immense.
You need youth and health for all this stuff.
pretty evident in Sams inability to have any patience whatsoever to take care of his boat.
The patience needed to read your uninspiring comments.

I did not realize how much I missed seeing you tackle all these projects till I saw this. That year in NC was a great series.

Check those lag bolts. If they loosen over time, pour epoxy in, then put them back in and let it harden.
Hey! Great to see the engine mounts were the thing. Looks like a really nice place. Sounds smooth (at low torques). Water line looks great!
I would keep an eye on throws bolts that holds the motor mounts in…lag bolts and fin thread are completely different.
Those new motor mounts look sharp.
