Pretty impressive! Never seen one like that, lol! What's amazing is that it WORKS! A testament to these old units? Love these vintage pieces, have a ton of them around the house. An old Pioneer SX-3900, a Technics SA-5570, a Fisher RS-2007, Marantz 2265, Pioneer SX-838, Yamaha CR 800, and more! Probably more than I need, but I'm a sucker for the silver faces, lol!
Man, I remember what a revelation FM stereo was on those units. We were accustomed to tinny AM pocket and car radios. Then there emerged FM, and on a Marantz or other quality receiver it was ‘dark’ yet beautifully clear. And with the flywheel tuner, the process of tuning in your fave stations was almost mystical. And you’d play it through these gargantuan wood speakers, and whether classical or jazz or rock were your thing they all sounded great at all volume levels. And there were FM DJs who played whole album sides from Coltrane or Pink Floyd or whatever other mind-blowing thing turned you on.
I picked up a 2230 that was complete but along with similar dust as yours also had old spilled liquid and mouse turds. I spent hours cleaning it and a few simple repairs. It still need all new bulbs and speaker Jack's but best $5 I've ever spent. It was laying on a pile of trash in a garage for minimum of 8years probably longer
As an audio repair guy for years I'd say this is probably better as a parts machine depending what is wrong with it. You'll need one for all the cosmetic parts anyway. You can figure out what is the best main chassis to start with once you get the parts thing. People are charging stupid price for parts machines also. I could fix most any of these things but you need a complete one to start with lol
In my younger days, Marantz or The Fisher tuners were what people with bucks bought. I wanted one real bad. It's great to see young folks appreciate the older tech.
Nice- I haven't had jumpers since I was 2. I cannot believe someone would actually sell a receiver in that condition. Looking forward to this coming together. Like the outtake
Good luck! It is not about what the unit is, nice though it was. It is about it being yours when you are done in a more singular way that anything you could ever buy. Car guys get it. When you build it or repair it, it really is apart of you.
Worked on a couple of Marantz receivers in the last few years. A 2275, and very dirty 2238B, which was very nice once cleaned. Given to me free by a friend who had it stored in his garage since it quit working. I wish people would store these indoors away from insects, rodents, dirt, dust, and dampness.
I bought a Marantz 2270 new from Soundex Electronics in Willow Grove, PA back in the 70's and loved it. I'm pretty sure that Marantz had an optional wood case (lid) that you could purchase at the time.
I just bought a Marantz 2230 myself and until you showed that terrible faux wood grain metal cover I thought someone vinyl coated the one I have. I've never seen one without the actual wood case that could be ordered separately. The one I have has the power switch replaced with a toggle switch, which I believe you probably answered the why part. I've been told if you replace the factory Marantz power switch, install a power snubber capacitor circuit and while I am not familiar I guess it has something to do with that DC Voltage issue at turn on.
About 20 years ago, I bought a couple of 2330s (not 2330b) on Ebay. What a dog of a model - amplifiers liked to burn up. I upgraded to a 2500 and never looked back.
I'm 95% sure the main amp 27 volts on the output problem is the output capacitor. 2200UF at 63 volts. It has to be shorted. Replace both when you do this. This looks like a unit was bought to fix another that the shop could not get parts for, or they made an error and got a replacement junker for parts for another customer. That dirt build up could be part of the problem, but doubt the high output voltage.
couldn't but help notice the floor sanding speakers in background, are they B&O's by any chance? shame you cant sell vintage dust, but hang onto it, could be the next big thing. Nice work, could you have the cover rapped?
I almost forgot, bought a 2238B a couple years back that looked just like this. Owner said he tried to plug it in and turned it on but smoke came out so he shut it off immediately. Asked for $50 which I couldn't pass..I need to get to it..
It´s the first time I see one of your videos, and; man!!!! the sound of the camera is really amazing, I mean, the frequency range of those mics are impressive. By the way, the output DC becomes of a shorted output transistor, I' don't know your skills with electronics, but thats an easy fix (with good original or close as possible spare parts).
I hope you didn’t pay more than $50. For that 40-50 year old Marantz Receiver. That unit has been through hell and back! Good luck restoring it! I have a feeling that one of the large power amp CAPS is bad
I brought one back from a similar condition. Mine had it’s faceplate so I didn’t need to go in search of the plastic window. I took mine to a tech, put a wood case on it and purchased a Marantz 2230 box with original styrofoam for it. A gazillion watts isn’t always necessary. Enjoy!!!
Subscribed. Late to this party. Had a 2240 at one point - just wasn't a fan, but that's what makes horse races (as my Dad would say). Anyway, we've seen the basket case - would like to see it restored.
I used to own a 2238b upgrade it a bit decided to sell it it did gave really warm sound I will give it that it just need some TLC and I was not ready to have the cap replaced the FM indicator replaced ran as smooth as you can be even the diffuse paper for the light I replaced took I sold it 10 year ago
A classic unit. Admirable that you had fun finding it - and now will share your 'fix it' . Thumbs up. .....I have a 2230 and a 2230b.... Subscribed and rang the bell.
Hi i missed the price you paid to get it I think that this could be a good alternative to DIY and amp for instance Just cannabalizing the power amp section of this amp would provide a nice sounding power amp Congratulations Kind regards, gino
Correct me if I’m wrong, but measuring DC offset on a capacitor coupled output without a load is pretty meaningless. You wouldn’t necessarily expect 0 volts without a load to charge the capacitor, no? Connect a speaker or an 8 ohm resistor, then measure and it should be at zero. In short, the capacitor won’t do its job of filtering DC voltage unless you put resistance on it. At least it’s that way on my 2230. Or am I full of crap? Not sure where you ended up with this.
@@AHFixIt ah…I see you’ve posted further videos on this unit, but I haven’t viewed them just yet. I’m pretty much behind on everything in life these days. I enjoy your vids though, and look forward to seeing that kitten purr. I love my 2230, I think it’s one of the sweetest sounding receivers Marantz ever made.
Yikes! She's rough is an understatement. 🥴 I'm sure you'll nurse her back to health though! You can get repop faceplates on ebay, as you know, but keep a saved search for the other needed/missing parts. ;) Love me a 2230! I use mine daily
Can't believe it made sound, goodness gracious. I have a challenge for you (if you work on the side) that 2 shops have failed miserably to accomplish. Kenwood 9000G - no shop has been able to keep the power transistors from blowing, takes about 1-2 running until it happens.
LOL, I love that look on your face at 6:15. WE could hear the quality narrow in too.
I had a 2230 way back when they were still being sold. Amazing with all that it still works. Can't wait for the restore video! I subscribed.
I could only think of dankpods while hearing that jazz song😂

0:31 love the DankPods headphone testing music lol
Old mate senny
I love seeing someone fix old electronics, including 50s tvs.
Subscribed! I hope to see you fix that receiver up. A testament to how good the older equipment was made!

More surprising is that someone would BUY one in that condition.
I don't know why, but this video brings me a LOT of joy.
Good to see you back indoors

I am going to award this unit a Purple Heart. Looking forward to Frankenstein receiver living again.
It would be amazing to see you bring this poor neglected Marantz back to it's original glory!
That's freaking hysterical! 🤣🤣🤣
Not only does it work (sort of), but the dang thing sounds good. 👽👍
Just found your channel, just subscribed. Yes, rebuild that unit!
"Nothings on fire yet, so that's pretty awesome"... Yeah, that's an understatement if ever I've heard one.
Long road ahead with that one, good luck!

I want to see it fully restored with videos showing how you did it.
This guy is a master, definitely worth subscribing. He does awesome work, has awesome skills.
If it is a capacitor coupled output like he said it could just be a bad capacitor.
I hope you didn’t pay more than $50. For that 40-50 year old Marantz Receiver. That unit has been through hell and back! Good luck restoring it! I have a feeling that one of the large power amp CAPS is bad
Yep those antenna's always broke off !!! Marantz tuner sections are always bullet-proof !! And amps were well built !!
I love how the tuner wheel/disk keeps on spinning.
You’re crazy! Lol! Good luck with the restoration!

still cleaner than the inside of the 2225 I bought in the summer - that was one for the record books
Looking forward to seeing this restored!
I'm excited to see this amp restored!
I don't subscribe to channels very often, but I would like to see you restore this receiver, so I SUBSCRIBED! :-)
omg what a lot of work to do!!! -the dust and goo on that will take a week to clean! how much was the unit? i bet the shipping was 2X the cost.
Subscribed. Late to this party.
Had a 2240 at one point - just wasn't a fan, but that's what makes horse races (as my Dad would say).
Anyway, we've seen the basket case - would like to see it restored.
Any hope for a non functioning Dynaco pre-amp that's older than dirt?
I really like your videos, even this "filthy" one! Haha, thanks and Merry Christmas!
Is there a second part to this series?
I used to own a 2238b upgrade it a bit decided to sell it it did gave really warm sound I will give it that it just need some TLC and I was not ready to have the cap replaced the FM indicator replaced ran as smooth as you can be even the diffuse paper for the light I replaced took I sold it 10 year ago
A classic unit.

Thumbs up.
.....I have a 2230 and a 2230b....
Subscribed and rang the bell.
Loved the sneak peek of your cat during unboxing. I was going to suggest that you get one (cat), but of course the cat beat me.
AWESOME and I`m sure when you`re done with it,it will be perfect!
I really can’t wait see this unit fixed up….
You would pick an "indestructible" receiver... LOL 😂, Really, great stuff, more proof of Marantz quality!
Hey l use to have a Marantz 2265B back in the day The beginning long path to my audiophile hobby Hey are your speakers old school Magnepans?
How do you get your phone to play on the receiver? Love the vid... can’t believe you got it working!!
3.5mm to RCA adapter cable
The 2230 - that can't be killed! It's a MONSTA! Run away! lol
Hi i missed the price you paid to get it I think that this could be a good alternative to DIY and amp for instance Just cannabalizing the power amp section of this amp would provide a nice sounding power amp
Congratulations Kind regards, gino
Can you even source parts for those?
Yikes! All knobs needed. That's going to be expensive...but worth it.
If you get that working properly, let us see the result, I might even start on my Montgomery Ward 450 (Hatachi) reciever.
Great receiver, get it going 👍🏻
Once you get it back to Glory will you sale it🤔 if so I could be interested.
I'm very surprised that seller didn't try and part out that unit.
Looking forward to project 2230 in 2022!

You are correct. I figured this out in a later video.

Was watching this video on a full magnepan home theater haha funny 🤣
How much to send it to you and get mine fixed ?
The interior looks like Berlin, April 1945.
0:30 Dankpods has joined the chat
I have the my dads original 2220b and it still works great!
Have a Scott R316 receiver not working on Ebay now. You want it for a fix it video?
Yikes! She's rough is an understatement. 🥴 I'm sure you'll nurse her back to health though! You can get repop faceplates on ebay, as you know, but keep a saved search for the other needed/missing parts. ;)
Love me a 2230! I use mine daily
Subscribed to see the resto!
thank unit was really...kicked around!!
You know it's pretty bad when you say, "original power cord, how bout that!".
Faceplate graphic? Transparency film and a laserjet printer.
Yeah, I'm considering making a replica somehow with my 2270's as the template/starting point
How much money did the seller give you to take this shop receiver off their hands? Lol
You are a brave man!
Question:why only Marantz. And why that Japanese made product?
Vintage Marrantz. Probably worth the work. Maybe buy a second of same to Frankenstein one good unit.
marrantz is worth...fixing!!
Liked & subed,,, Love to see it restored,,,,
Manca il pannello frontale, spero che riesci a trovarlo.fai un buon restauro
What is happening with the car?
sad how people treats stuff
Can't believe it made sound, goodness gracious. I have a challenge for you (if you work on the side) that 2 shops have failed miserably to accomplish. Kenwood 9000G - no shop has been able to keep the power transistors from blowing, takes about 1-2 running until it happens.
Either the power distribution board or transformer
Seen amps like that taken out of clubs, but sticky with haze fluid and cigarette smoke... nasty
Is this the same one you powerwashed?
Yes!
Friend you have a hard challenge , good luck
i have a sr 6000 thats missing the amplifier board ,anyone care to purchase it ? its in good shape
Interested in 2 marantz receiver 1 with wooden case 1 without. All there and clean .!😀😀🎤🎤🎤🎸🎸🥁🥁🍺 one is a 2226b
Replace every capacitor in it as well.
Maaan that ain't dust I just pulled dust pulled in by mouse piss & turds out of my Kenwood's amp board & I was using that receiver man
I almost bid on that receiver but I thought it was toast! You have your work cut out for you
you just need to give it good bath and find the parts you need off ebay.
Man you got repair a broken turd. Brilliant.
Like it, funnily enough it reminds me of Wall-E the movie, I think it must be the dust....
This marantz needs a pretty good shower in the bathroom. After that, repairs can begin after 3 days.
I have a pioneer sx-1010 for sale . Works but needs a little work……
I bet that receiver rocked a many ah parties!
I have a 2230, and that doesn’t look familiar 🤪
DankPods Music xD.
This is gonna be good!
U know ur stuff son.
