I'm glad the topic of synthetical ingredients was discussed. They get a terrible reputation just because of misinformation.
As far as I'm concerned, the ecologic impact of natural ingredients should be a part of a discussion - if we can produce something in a smaller scale that doesn't require massive amounts of growing/harvesting/distilling/etc, why not consider it as the better option?
Jasmine was mentioned here and I think it's important to point out that creating these flowers for perfumery takes a massive environmental and social impact. It's just one example, but it goes to show that synthetic ingredients are often more balanced alternatives to natural oils!

Nic mentioned about places that allow customization of perfumes. We have some here in the Philippines and that's how I've slowly learned the smell of some notes and why I like or dislike a perfume based on notes. But I don't do that often so I have a long way to go. I don't plan to become a nose. I only want to become a great gift-giver. 😉

I can think of lots of questions, here are a couple:
- Who creates a note / accord? meaning how is the decision that an ingredient or a few materials are labels as something, this is a marshmallow , a cherry or this is a Gingerbread accord/smell . Does the perfumer just mixes and defines -this has a cherry and musk smell,or is it the marketing of a brand?
- How come the same perfumer an make different perfumes in a very different price/quality categories? The same perfumer can make a celebrity scent, a designer and a very exclusive niche perfume ? some can even be similar in style and smell and very different market and price.
Does that mean that h same notes are created in parallel using smaller quantities of materials (so that they are less expansive) or different "lesser" material that imitate the same smell and create a similar effect?
