What is going on with Qantas? Australia's airline drama, explained
At a time when #qantasairlines probably expected to be celebrating its biggest profit on record, the airline is in serious damage control amid a series of controversies.
Despite the company’s remarkable financial turnaround from $7bn in losses over the past few years, #Qantas has found itself struggling to rebuild its image as a much-loved Aussie brand.
Just when it appeared things could not get worse for the flying kangaroo after two bruising parliamentary committee hearings this week, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission struck what could be the biggest blow of all.
The lawsuit, alleging false, misleading or deceptive conduct, comes on top of a class action over travel credits, the #QatarAirways controversy, political fallout and employee discontent.

"Despite the company's remarkable financial turnaround..."
The "company" includes all of its workers. If the "company" chooses to increase its profit margin by screwing its employees to the back wall by employing them via hire companies so as to avoid paying them what they would otherwise be entitled, then it is not the company that is making a turn around, it is the pointy end of the corporate pyramid and fat cat shareholders that are experiencing a turn around, while those doing the heavy lifting are sent dive-bombing into the ground so that the likes of Alan Joyce and Co. can get ever bigger multi-million dollar payouts. The level of hypocrisy is simply astounding, and why I believe that corporations are inherently toxic to society!

You mention fares, shareholders and unhappy customers. What about the employees who have been treated so poorly for so long? Out sourced work to labour hire companies on a fraction of the wage. Multiple different contracts for the same job. Wages at Qantas have fallen more than in any other company thanks to AJ

A lot of the Qantas staff are amazing- with the exception of a lot of their undertrained call centre workers who can only read off a script and do nothing else. But I blame management for that. Unfortunately, automation in the name of profit has gotten rid of a big chunk of the company's greatest asset - it's amazing and experienced staff. By driving up the cost of living, the politicians and billionares get together in their circle jerk orgy and develop ways to make it harder for the average worker to say no because they need brainless zombie workers that will take the bondage and slavery or minimum pay with minimum entitlements so that the shareholders can benifit more from doing nothing. If the dishonest retention of customers money wasn't bad enough for the Qantas image the other burning question that needs to be answered is the appearance of collusion between Qantas and the Federal Government over the Qatar decision. Did Qantas agree to change the paint scheme on certain aircraft to show support for the Voice in exchange for competition protection. The failure of Joyce to provide any credible answers at the recent Senate estimates and various reasons for the Qatar decision given by various Cabinet Ministers certainly needs a closer look.
While doing that perhaps the authorities need to conduct a forensic accounting investigation into the COVID payments. Whilst I agree those payments were required to ensure the viability of the national carrier we need to know exactly where each of those dollars went. If any of that money was not used for the purpose it was intended then it should be paid back with the appropriate interest rate applied.

Australian pilots would rather work for ULCCs, ACMIs and Regionals in the US than QF. That's a big statement on how things are at QF when people are leaving the Q400 jobs at the Link to jump into a US regional, Atlas or Spirit over QF. I'm an Aussie pilot and there is no way on this earth I'd even consider a job there or in their painted Network, NJS or Jetconnect (whatever they're calling them) for a jet job. Money and QOL is better literally elsewhere, even the sandpit and Hong Kong.

I was flying from Melbourne to Singapore with Qantas on an Airbus A330 my flight was at 9:15am but we didn't board because of engine issues so we sat there with no information at 4pm Qantas cancelled the flight, this overweight bushpig started welling at us to leave the airport and call Qantas for further information. It was embarrassing I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I walked up to this thing and told her non of us are moving until we speak to your superior, she didn't want to listen or hear us her face went red still yelling then eventually a human came to sort out this mess.

I don't mind if they cancel flights for safety reasons (not dying is a good thing). I'd rather they did that than wait and see how it all goes or get a write up from CASA or the Chief Pilot or something. But they just handle it badly and make you do a thousand magic tricks yourself to sort it out, when it is their problem. As terrible as they are and as much as I hate their rather aggressive/dismissive service, one thing Virgin did was when our flight was cancelled for weather, both times they rescheduled the flight and sent us the details.

The government needs to call a Royal Commission or similar as to what money Qantas received during the Covid period . The opposition is being totally hypocritical in attacking the current government on this issue . There needs to be questions asked whether they got preferential treatment over Virgin & Rex, whether route cuts were used by Qantas to bribe MP’s. It appears now that their profits are on the back of ripping Aussies off. This isn't a surprise if you've followed the company under Joyce.
Add to that is the antitrust issue with QANTAS and the Australian Prime Minister. Joyce has forced the company to side with a political party's attempt to change the constitution while at the same time receiving the advantage of having other airlines stopped from increasing their flights in and out of Australia. If money is paid for a trip and a company cancels at trip the money should be refunded because it has no right to hold the money and make interest on it.
Further, the conduct of lessening competition may well be designed to use up the money owned on far more expensive fights which is wrong.

So they will keep their frequent flyers. Plus Virgin isn't really much better if you want to do non regional flights and regional carriers are often quite expensive.
