This is PiGRRL, a DIY gameboy. Look at it next to the new Pocket Pi GRRL - It’s like half the size, but just as powerful, with all sorts of retro games.
This is a really fun project. You can learn about electronics and the raspberry pi by building one!
We have a full tutorial on how to build this project on the adafruit learning site, it’s super fun!
The Raspberry Pi A+ is small and adorable linux computer. The adafruit PiTFT is a 320x240 2.4’ display. This pi hat makes a great circuit sandwich!
For the controls we’re using tactile switches and a Perma-Proto wired to a Pi Cable - Much better than hacking apart your Super Nintendo controller, save it for another project!
To power this project, we're using the PowerBoost 1000c. It lets you charge while you’re playing - we’re calling it smart charging. 2000mAh of lithium gives you plenty of time to save that princess.
How about that audio? 8-Bit never sounded so good with this tiny class-D amplifier and a mini metal speaker.
Speaking of small, our 3D printed enclosure is even smaller than the original pocket gameboy. How do you like that BMO?
Check out the Adafruit tutorial. You can get all the parts to build this project on the shop at adafruit dot com.

Hi Adafruit, and big thanks to Ruiz brothers and there team for bringing such heart warming projects. Respect for you guys. There's nothing like the nostalgia feeling of playing super Mario 3 and on a hand held system, thats way totally awesome.
I have the built Pocket Pi Grrl as my first Rpi project. I am new to Raspberry Pi and I am having some troubles with it. Is it okay if I ask about my problem here?
I downloaded the Pigrrl image dumped the billi mario (generic name for SM3 in India in 80's, billi means cat) and some other roms, when I started The game I noticed a lag or you can say sluggish performance. I said to myself "sluggish performance while emulating NES?"
I am sure RPi is much faster than 8bit consoles , so why the poor performance with NES? Is it possible to correct the sluggishness by tweaking some settings?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi there, thanks for your comment! You may want to try tweaking the overclock settings in the config.txt - we tested a hand full of roms, some preform better than others. Also, check out the guide here for more details and tips learn.adafruit.com/running-opengl-based-games-and-emulators-on-adafruit-pitft-displays/

+Gaurav Dalip Although the hardware is better, remember it's emulating the original hardware. Not running natively on the Pi hardware. The SNES emulator isn't perfect, tweaking the config to add small frame skipping can resolve most FPS issues.

    With:
    3.5" screen
    tiny keyboard
    a different 3d printed enclosure.

the pi has audio out i believe. if the specific pi you use doesn't you can get a usb soundcard for 10$ where its premade andnall you have to do is cram it in the housing
you could make your own DAC but this is just the cheaper/quicker idea. i realize as i type this im a bit late to the punch

+Adafruit Industries Kewl cause I don't think Retropie requires multicores. A single core processor should be more then enough. Plz let me know when it comes out. I also so require these videos and kits as I am no engineer. I'm an A+ certified Computer Tech but this goes way beyond anything I've ever done with that.

An old 3ds goes for around $50 depending on condition and firmware, but all you'll need is a 3ds, an SD card (size of your choice, but bigger than 4) and depending on if the firmware is on is downgrade able or not a game like Ocarina Of Time.
