The moment when the Orks begin their charge and the animation style shifts from the sketchy style to a clearer style with just a hint of color is so striking. Turning a style choice I can imagine in part was to hide errors as the creators learned how to do the animation, and then letting it fall away both to show his improvement as well as signifying Grimaldus' mental state is artistic genius.

I've always interpreted the way the animation becomes clearer as the battle progresses as Grimaldus' focus becoming clearer.

That Braveheart speech though. Grimaldus is incredible.

Primus comforting the dying guardsman is my favourite scene; I uploaded it myself a couple of months ago. That a wordless exchange between two roughly-drawn animated characters (one wearing a full-face helmet, no less) manages to be so powerful... yes, it carries more weight if you know how historically unflappable and disinterested, on the whole, Space Marines tend to be.
    Great job by all involved.

This animation was so well done, I thought it took a production studio. When in reality it was a solo project. Much like Astartes that followed, it set the bar, for fan animation. It was well executed and even gets you in the feels. A true masterpiece.

I agree with you, that part with Primus feeling empathy for a human soldier, probably for the first time, was the best part for me. I sat and watched the full film the other night and there are so many great character moments and payoffs. It got me totally engrossed and I'm a complete noob in 40k.

The fact that the guard has to almost mag dump clear headshots into an ork before they go down shows why spacemarines are needed.
Lasguns are essentially equivalent to a 50cal and it still takes concentrated focus fire from multiple guardsmen to put down a single ork.

The part where Priamus stands vigil over the dying Guardsman is one of the more beautiful moments in the series. He finally seems to have reached a point where he actually respects regular humans and had he survived the battle of Helsreach I am certain he would have become a wise Astartes. He was already battle hardened and skilled to the point of possibly becoming a Champion, but here he developed a sense of necessary humanity. And what seems to go unnoticed for most is that he actually gives the Guardsman a nod after her passing. Not only empathizing with her death, but actually respecting her.

11:15 - I find the imagery of a guardsman lifting up an Ork and throwing him over the parapet with his bare hands hilariously unlikely 😂 Doesn't stop all of this being so freaking awesome though

"Never again in life will your actions carry such consequences. Never again will you serve as you serve now. No duty will matter as much, and no glory will taste as true." This speech is actually rather sly. It sounds encouraging and inspiring, but he's really saying that you're all most likely going to die.

He's also telling them that in death they will join an unbroken chain of the honored dead that stretches back to the very beginning, a kind of immortality. To stand among the greatest martyrs of mankind.

Important question: who made the soundtrack for the Helsreach series? It blends perfectly with the events of the story and sounds great on its own ad well.

Something I think you seem to have missed, it is only as battle is joined that the very first tiny hints of COLOUR appear in their bleak black and white world. The Astartes, and Grimaldus himself are only truly alive in battle, until then, their existence is grey, drab, and ragged.
As the battle intensifies, we see more and more colour, culminating not in the retreat of the Orc attack, but with Priamus kneeling to comfort the guardsmen dying in a puddle of her own guts. It is the horrific wound that becomes the most colourful sight in the entire world. The true prize of battle, and no prize at all.
There isn't a scrap of colour until the Great War begins, heavy-handed symbolism but handled beautifully for all it's lack of subtlety.

  • @flavione84

This part is a masterpiece, No this whole movie is a master piece. I loved the speach part a lot . Also the first attack was awesome, from the military defense posts to the charging orks and especially 10:28. WHen the flag setands still and the templars start doing what they are good at. If the previous scenes are just savage force from the orks jumping on the walls, the moment the templars engage is pure art. The semi slow-mo attack scenes are marvelous.

Games Workshop didn’t make this video. The underlying book was written by Aaron Dembski-Bowden, one of their best writers. The actual animations were done by a fan, Richard Boylen. He wasn’t paid or anything, he did it because he loves the hobby/lore.

    • @HTWW
      @HTWW 10 місяців тому +1

@@NexUtInfinitusgranted, he then went on to create the 'Angels of Death' for GW in official quality, which was quite nicely done.
But yeah, Helsreach is one of Wh40k's best fan creations.

Well, here I'm going to offer an unpopular opinion: I don't like this epic, glorious mood that the ep suggests.
The book's narrative is much more tense, rough and wild. Grimaldus can smell the sweat and piss from guard, they are all terrified, the confrontation is cruel and Grimaldus says in the sequence that he only makes a beautiful speech for those he knows are going to die. And I also don't understand Primus' compassion scene with the guardsman, he cares the least about everyone in the story.
This EP just makes it sound like imperial propaganda. But hey, it's a fan adaptation, I know. Just saying.
