  • I decided to film the making of my Aradia horns and make it into a tutorial, I've never made a video tutorial before so it's kinda crappy but oh well~ i think it ended up being pretty neat
    I used my webcam and Windows Movie maker for it so it isn't very HQ to say the least

    I know this is an old video but it might help some new homestuck cosplayers! If you don’t want your headband to be visible then you can glue teased wool onto it. Make sure it’s black wool tho. This usually works best with short or curly wigs like Karkat or Gamzee

    Aradia is my favorite troll, so I convinced my mom to let me cosplay her (she was very hesitant to let me paint myself grey) but she gave me the ok, so this tutorial is awesome, thank you so much!!

    • @JohnPorsbjerg
      @JohnPorsbjerg  8 років тому +1

      +Jade Fangirl Yea she's one of my favorite trolls too! such a cutie! Your mom is right to be worried about the grey body paint though, it is literally hell (not to discourage you :S), make sure you get body paint that's a really good quality! preferably two shades (a mix of most's companies white and grey usually works good) and get setting powder and setting spray too! Body paint is suuuuper difficult so take your time to practice long before the con! Good luck with your cosplay! I'd love to see it so if you post it on ig or tumblr please tag me!

      +John Porsbjerg (John-chan) I will be sure to tag you, the issue with my mom was more about the fact that she thinks 12 year old girls like me should be more concerned with the color pink and the current styles than cosplay. But, I convinced her :)

      Jade Fangirl haha yea when i was younger my mom really wanted be to go out more and cosplay less too, but i think now she's realized what an awesome hobby it is! I hope your mom gets a bit more open to cosplay, she's made the first step at least :)

    • @JohnPorsbjerg
      @JohnPorsbjerg  6 років тому

      nishisvah wow it's three years old now?? time flies man 😅 All store-bought paperclay is the same pretty much the same, and most stores only carry one brans anyway so you probably won't have a choice 🤷🏻‍♀️ Just get the lightest one you can find!

    Is paper clay lighter than regular air dry clay? I'm trying to make some deer horns but the last few attempts with it with regular air clay made it waaaayyyy too heavy and started drooping despite there being wiring inside to hold it up. Would a diy paper clay would good too?

    • @JohnPorsbjerg
      @JohnPorsbjerg  8 років тому

      +honeycomb yums sorry but polymer clay would definitely be way way way too heavy.. these weigh quite a lot and they're made of the lightest clay out there! also it would take like 30+ packages of polymer clay and considering that polymer clay is way more expensive than paper clay it really would make no sense to make them out of polymer clay. Thank you very much for your comment

    This is a good tutorial. One question. Do you think these would be good for bigger horns? Im making a Ganon cosplay from Ocarina of Time and was wondering how well they would hold up as far as weight and durability.

    would model magic work?

    • @JohnPorsbjerg
      @JohnPorsbjerg  9 років тому

      +Karkat “Dave Strider/Gamzee” Vantas Sorry for the late answer! youtube didn't give me a notification for some reason! In my country we don't have model magic so I've never used it, but i've heard that it's good because it's very light weight which is what you want for these horns! Here's a thread on cosplay.com that discusses the pros and cons of each material and especially the second comment is very helpful!
      But basically you just need something light waist and very sculpt-able, which model magic is supposed to be, so it should work out!

  • @archliter
    @archliter 8 років тому

    Would it make wierd markings to use smaller knifes to make the shapes in the horns?

    • @JohnPorsbjerg
      @JohnPorsbjerg  8 років тому

      I don't know, i haven't tried it, but i'm pretty sure the lines would be too sharp. You need to use something round otherwise the horns might look too messy and unnatural. But it's really not hard to find an object that works.. chopsticks, paintbrushes, pencils, sticks, and if you don't have nay of those you use knife to whittle a stick to the right size.

    • @JohnPorsbjerg
      @JohnPorsbjerg  8 років тому

      +Calena Dremur The materials to make these horns are super cheap! paperclay is one of the cheapest materials (which is why it's my favorite x3) so if you can just get her to give you a ride to the craftstore you can definitly get everything yourself! Thank you for your comment!

    Would this technique work On other troll horns?

    • @JohnPorsbjerg
      @JohnPorsbjerg  8 років тому +3

      yes of course! although these horns sit so well on your head because the weight holds them down and in place, if you're cosplaying someone with taller horns, such as gamzee or the ancestors i think they woukld wobble and fall off or break, you would need a wider headband, and a way to wear the headband under wig and attach the horns on the outside, there should be tutorials of how to do this here on youtube!
      The method for making the horns them selves would work with any trolls (except maybe tavros his are too big) but the slim "invisible" headband would only work with trolls that have shorter horns. The biggest horns I've made with this technique are vriska's and feferi's

    • @clearlylost396
      @clearlylost396 8 років тому

      So it would work with the type of horns Vriska has? (I'm asking because I'm going to be cosplay with some friends.)

    • @JohnPorsbjerg
      @JohnPorsbjerg  8 років тому

      Stacy Castillo Yes as i said I've made Vriska's horns with this technique so i see no reason why you shouldn't be able to ^ w ^
