72 nova
Nice job on the Nova. At one time, all GMs made a Nova with different tail lights, and it spells NOVA.
Chevy N-ova
Olds O-mega
Pont V-entura
Buick. A-pollo
I just found that out recently. That is pretty cool.
For those boneheads that are sitting in the bleachers or standing around laughing at you who cares you're having fun that's all that counts you run what you brung
"If you want to win, you've got to be willing to lose because you've got to start somewhere and that somewhere is normally in a position many others have already crossed."
What a great line that is applicable to nearly everything in life.
Brought to you by "The Twist Tie Not Rod Garage"
LoL 😆
I love the long Gears of a 3-speed but not with a 273 rear end. No no
15:01 I'd be happy with a cruiser that does that , I'd be nervous too , great job
96 mph at the top of second gear. 2.73's are Bonneville salt flat gears.
You can't "Scoff" a 15.01 run...
Y'all did great on this build!
PNW representing!
Take care,

Same here bahaha I recognize one of the bridges he went under lol
It's a very respectable street time especially for what is done to it and what it needs !! To me unless your exceptionally good the 4 speed is an ET killer !!! It definitely needs a posi unit with a set of 4.11 Ring and pinion gears !!! Ugh you want to play then PLAY !!!
I'm 50 yrs old been doing this along time... like that other guy said you fellas make us old guys young again.. let me know if you need some info. Love your videos fellas
Man this channel is awesome, old beaters are my world. 👍🏻 You really need to make the Nova quicker, you’ll have a blast running 13’s or 12’s, and it’s relatively cheap.
A "FAIL"..........hell no! For what you got a 15.01 is a really good time.......Congratulations............well done, especially on a really low budget!
Bring back the nova ss lol but seriously bring it back bbc T-5 or t-56 3.42 or 3.73 posi !!
You guys did a great job putting it together. The car did great at your first go get ya some launches under your belt
Even with those rear gears those times will come down.
I made my first pass in 1974 with a similar setup. difference
Was motor it was a
67 camaro factoy 3 spd 2 bbl single exaust the engine had just been rebuilt by a friends Dad and at the time I managed to put a slight Cam into it it ran a 15.2 my first ever SIR (PRP NOW) I was hooked! I many more grudge races and many changes to that car the 3 speed was the right mix in the 1/4 I tried a couple 4 speeds and it always came back to 3
Speeds and 2 shifts won the race for me. Life was simpler and times were slower thanks for the trip back!
Nothing blew up it's a win.
Dude, if'n y'all stop making videos, I'ma gonna come whar y'alls at and do somethin' bad to ya'...no, for real, I love your content and you make an "old" man feel like I'm 17 again...I will spread your videos far and wide...one of my first cars was a '74 grandma yellow, brown vinyl top Nova...an old lady had this car and everyday drove it until I bought 'er in '84...her husband bought it a Chevy dealer in Elkton Md. known for selling brand new race cars starting in the '60s...the 350, slipslide powerglide, 4something rear gear was built more for him, but it was her daily driver...she took super meticulous notes on everything that was done to it...she included the maintenance book and all original paperwork in the sale...there were about 20 guys interested in the car and she could have gotten a whole lot more for it, but I told her the right story and she sold it to me...I explained what I was going to do with it, drive to work during the week and run 'er at Cecil County Dragway on the weekends...just what they did with the car...how much you say, had to be $4k or better, right? $1200 bucks, because she wanted, SHE wanted me to put Keystone Klassics and new rubber on 'er...she knew that I was blue collar and she wanted to help out a kid like me with not so deep pockets...when she pulled the Nova out of their garage, I asked her if she would do a burnout...her answer was a screamer that obliterated the sun...DAMN WAS I STOKED! On the test ride, I stopped by the local tire shop and had the rims and tires put on...when I pulled up in her driveway, she looked at the new rims, she said it must mean that I was taking 'er...I responded by handing her a bank envelope with $1500 in it(I'd have given her anything she wanted, but I was poor, remember?)...I found myself crying like a little girl when she told me WHY she was selling it...her husband had just died and she hadn't received the life insurance yet...the damn electric company wouldn't help her keep the lights on, even though they were aware of the situation...me and the rest of my boys passed the hat everywhere we went and collected over a grand to help...I offered to let her keep the car and to consider the money a gift to help out and I thought she was gonna hit me! This 66 year old, 5'nothin' of a woman had me a bit worried! Anyhow, I didn't intend this to be a damn book, I had to finish what I had started...she and I and all my racer buddies become the best of friends and she was like another grandma to most of us...we cut her grass, shoveled her driveway, and hung out with her every chance we got...sad thing was, even though we were around her on most days, the nights were long without her beloved "bubula" and after 4 years, she passed in her sleep...from what, I believe, a broken heart...she was found by her daughter and myself...somebody's cuttin' onions in here...I'll never forget Liz, or what she did for me...I was definitely blessed by her cruising through my life...đã wôôķīëë...
3:73’s for the win
What are the specs on your wheel sizes and tire combo? Really like the fitment going to get a 76 Nova soon.😁
The slicks are 26 x 9-15 and the wheels are 15" Inch Vision Rally 55 15x7 5x120.7 (5x4.75") +6mm Dark Silver Wheel Rim.
My dude, to be your first few videos, the editing is fucking amazing!! Keep it up and this channel will blow up. I can actually relate because I'm a typical middle class fucker that can't afford to buy expensive shit. Hell I don't even have a shop! I poured me a small slab with some quickrete and put up a fucking tarp. Haha!
You need to do a little searching. The 72 comes with a 10bolt rear-end. Try to find yourself a 12bolt and go with 4:10 gears. While you are under there, also install a drive shaft loop. May not be needed yet but in case you ever get fast enough, it may be required.
In 72 GM switched to the 8.5" 10 bolt instead of the 8.2". The 8.5" is actually a pretty solid unit especially if upgraded to 30 spline axles. In fact the pinion in an 8.5" is the same pinion in a 12 bolt.
JDW TheBullitt technically, if you have slicks you’re supposed to have a loop, around here anyways
I never went that deep a 373:1 was as high as I went for drivability i like to get on the highway sometimes lol now in today's day and age with a 700 r4 a 411:1 is not out of range it would have a first and 2nd that would kick like a mule and still go down the highway
Nooo brother always get that carb up off the intake especially with a dual plane at least a 1 inch open... I put a 2 inch open spacer on my 70 Nova stock bottom end 350 a 280--- ,480 comp cam performer rpm intake 750 dual pump and 4.11 gear ran 7.80 in 1/8th ..but the 2 inch spacer picked me up 2 tenths ...I changed it at the track after 3 runs I ran 8.00 then the spacer and 7.86 .. trust me the spacer helps. Find you a old torker or a scorpion intake and a 2inch spacer with 4holes brother you will be flying with that little car ...ported 461 that intake a 292 comp cam 3500 you tci converter and you go 7.00 ...you got a sweet car
That was great. Inspiration for anyone else building an old school. Liked and subbed
The only way to win is to lose, so that you become humble and start from ground zero and build your way up.
I noticed something else your Nova has 69 to 71 tail lights my 72 Nova has 69 to 71 taillights as well.
NOT A FAIL! This is a great channel man and it is gonna be huge. Real is the deal.
ET does not matter if your having fun that's all that matters. Have a blast.
Good Job! i think i had just as much fun as you. i really enjoyed the journey. you remind me of me when i was younger , and you look and act like my boy! you guy's are about the same age. i am 60 and still doing what you just did. keep up the fun
Your friend looks like John Chase from hoonigan 🤔
Do what u do...ND have fun doing it ..screw all the uppies with deep pockets..u did a great job ..
That was not a fail!
Hay ,good job all around. but befor you go to that big block ,get some sub frame connectors.
You come across on video as the average Joe but your technical knowledge was impressive.
That's a win! You MADE it down the strip, and drive it home. I'd call that good man. Nice job.
Cant wait for your next improvements, especially rear gear change. Eg 3:73 ? Then you'd actually get some use out of third gear. Good transformation so far guys! Fun video!
your nova reminds me of my friends camaro from back in the day. He had bullet holes in the quarter so you are doing better.
15's for your first run with those gears is pretty damn good.
Every one needs to drag race once in there life even if you have a stock car it's fun!
I'M SO PROUD OF Y'ALL BROTHER!CONGRATULATIONS!! YOU ARE A WINNER IN MY EYE'S!KEEP UP THE HARD WORK! PEACE OUT!
4.56:1 rear gear would make that pretty salty for a 3 speed car
Just built a rear end for it with 4.11 gears. Stay tuned...
@@NotRodShop looking forward to seeing it pick up
@@NotRodShop 4.11 gearing is a good start. My '68 340 Barracuda (4-speed) runs 4.86:1 cogs... rev to 6500 rpm, launch, and count to 1. If I get to 1 and haven't pulled for 2nd, I'm late. ;-)
15 is not slow. Its not fast but its not slow either. My Nova ran 15 flat my first time out. This year i ran 14.5s a few times, and I've got 76cc chambered smog heads
Are you saying it's half fast?
@@ElderlyIron half assed, yes
Throw some 2.73 gears in that LaCrosse and watch it run 22's!
Ok, well, compare 1st gear then! LOL
I see you haven't considered this issue for very long. It's a matter of math of a given HP from engine RPM to tire RPM. Look at what a slug it is coming off the line. 2.73 final drive with most likely a 2.85 1st gear ratio. In order to get into the power band of that 350, he'd have to ride the clutch hard, well beyond the 60 foot mark, but he lets the clutch out right off the line. (Which is exactly what I would probably do my first pass ever!) His max HP should be somewhere around 4000 RPM. Second gear steps up to 1.88 which drops the engine RPM back down below the peak torque/HP. If you listen, he barely gets into 3rd (1:1) at the end of the track.
You didn't say what year Buick you had, but let's assume you have the 3.6, DOHC engine. It produces 310 HP at 6800 RPM. You have to turn 2800 RPM faster in order to achieve your peak HP. (Your peak torque is at 5200 RPM) Since you seem to be bent on final drive numbers only, you looked right past the fact that you have a 6 speed transmission. (Unless, of course you have a NINE speed transmission. Why would they do THAT?) Twice as many gears as he does. You go into peak HP just about right off the line. Your 1st gear is 4.49:1 (or lower) to his 2.85:1 Because your next gears ratios are so close, the engine never RPM never really falls below the peak HP when changing to the next gear.
Older semi trucks often use Cummins engines that produce 250 HP. 60 less HP than your Buick, yet they pull 60,000 pound loads at highway speeds. Figure that one out...
I'm rebuilding a 74 Ventura, this gives me a lotta hope. Glad to see your Nova run a decent quarter mile!
My first scratch built car was very similar.
Also ran low 15s with stupid high 2.42 gears.
Good job man.
When I saw the car come to the line i thought 15's and I was right on the money. I bet a 4 speed and shorter rear end ratio would get you into the 14's easy. This is old school "run what you brung" drag racing. I'd give you an A for your first ever drag race.
It's already been said here but I have a very similar experience. The immense feeling of success and confidence from achieving what you have done here cannot be overstated. For the folks snickering about your ET---which is not bad in my book---have to understand you turn just as many wrenches, nuts, and bolts as those cars running sub-10's. What's the difference? Simple--the money invested. I would argue you get more satisfaction running how and what you did versus the guy spending $30k or more. Job well done!
Glad I found you guys! The car looks absolutely sinister. May I suggest an L88 hood?
Win win with your gears you have got a good car to run on the street and you'll probably get decent gas mileage and it's nice to run across videos like yours I like the Raw shade tree mechanic real African American Ingenuity builds
Nice guys this is what it's all about, building a car is a journey, I'd rather have a not rod I'm building up that a bought rod I didn't build
Exactly! I AGREE 100%
Runs pretty darn good, looking forward to see what's up next!!!
Just found these two episodes, what a gem on youtube! Love it. Could you tell me, what your intro song is? Sounds great just like that chevy motor ;)
A stock 1970 Hemi Cuda only did 14 seconds on the 1/4 mile
Its not a fail if it makes ya smile.
That's a win in my book! Looking forward to watching you dial it in.
Good show. Not bad for nothing but parts you already had. Loved he hydraulic clutch stuff. Now you have a number and MPH, you can commence to making more speed and MPH. One tip: once done with a run, write down how the car ran, shift points, anything about the car going wooga wooga at a shift or top end...write down everything. Keep a log of your timing, the curve, the jets, float settings etc. You running slicks now, make sure the tubes are set. Maybe add 5psi to the fronts ( less rolling ya know?) Lots of stuff but you get the picture. Have Fun!!
Next time dont go for 3rd gear....if you woulda jus wound it out a lil longer in 2nd gear you woulda made a better time....considerably! You went fer 3rd right at the point you wer outta track......basicly zero acceleration fer that last 20 feet er wutever....combine that with a better launch an reaction time it mighta been closer to mid 14s possably
reaction time has no effect on quarter mile time....
Like you said, you were slow out of the hole, but after that, excellent job.
Awsome, love old cars that but back together and tun of fun:)
I THINK YOU ARE GREAT !!!!
Nice to see used parts been used, keep up the good work :- ))))
That's not rodding! Awesome vid man.
This is hilarious and extremely rewarding all at the same time hahaha
That’s such a cool car. My friends dad growing up had a 72, he had one when he was a kid but sold it when kids came, he badly wanted another one but wouldn’t bring himself to spend on it. Eventually his wife saved enough money up to buy him a project nova, 72, black with a stock 350. That car today after many years of blood sweat and hard work is a beautiful car that rumbles down the road and shines like a diamond. I honestly like the ratty style finish on it, that’s how I finished my project truck because I like the way it looks lol
Wow, you got some heavy hitters for season opener in the N'west! We didn't have O2 sensors back in the '80's (not in the hood, anyways), just tuned by sound and smell, but hell of a result with 2:73's! Maybe 3:55's with your combo will yield high 13-low 14's if you tweek that launch. Good luck, bro!
Total win my friend!!!!
Love the videos man honestly I bet rocks your channel blows up if you keep up with the good videos
I like it as that how most of us start out.
Air filter screwing itself off ! 😂
Looks like alot of fun . good job brothas
I dig the budget build and the scrounging around for parts but IMO I would just save and put in what counts 4.10 posi/427BBC/muncie 4spd.
Enjoyed every minute. Gotta say,,, In my day 1976 - 1982, for ANY high schooled car built like you built this one, pushing 14's was a "GOD" car!!! "God I wish I had that.'" Well done. I can not wait to see more!
I’m loving it! I daily drive a classic that’s thrown together like your sweet Nova. I love having a vintage car that isn’t perfect because that way I’m not terrified to drive it.
How did you do your fuel hardline setup? I am a 29 year old that is used to working more on modern engines. So I laugh at myself trying to figure out the simplicity of old vehicles. Trying to clean up somethings on a truck that belonged to my grandfather, '58 Apache 3100 400 small block.
3/8" hard brake line threads into the pump. The weatherhead 1446 conversion fitting will convert the flare on the 3/8 brake line to the o-ring style filter for a 2001 silverado. Then out of the filter a 1446 fitting into 3/8 brake line. Then at the carb you'll need a 3/8 flare input which is factory on a Rochester, on a holley you can buy the part you need that has a 3/8 flare. There are other ways to do it too where you can use 3/8 flare to -6an fittings if you want to use soft hose as well.
this was cool, everything worth doing has a curve.
im finally building my "not" dream car,a 1986 third gen trans am but im doing it all myself.my real "dream car" is a 1970 cuda!
ive owned 4-5 of them but never really did them up or did much of anything other than driving them.i had a 72 chevelle and
started to build it "right" and found the frame was cracked in multiple places and the car was rotten in several unseen places
so i got rid of it.i didnt have a shop, tools or the skills at the time.now ive got a garage and a clean car to start with so theres that!!
Lose that glass fuel
filter before it breaks and you lose the car due to a fire.
15.01 not bad for a home shop build and never been raced or set up .Now make er go fast and use all you learned from your test run, NICE NOVA for what you paid.
Love the vids. Where in WA are you guys? Puyallup here.
Thanks for the fuel filter trick. Check out my '72 nova vids from several years ago, I was at the same point you are now. Now I am finishing paint and LS1/T56 swap (no vids though)
I’m currently trying to build a similar build except with a 78 short wheel base C10
Love the budget Nova project, wish there was more videos in the series. Hope to see you continue with it in the future and knock more time off your et's.
Any thing you would do differently? I to am building a 1970 Nova in the PNW. I have a 350 motor out of a chevelle that I just put in it.
You need to go with an msd ignition box you’ll get so much better spark and better carburetor tuning
Sir...Your car sucks, But your level of dedication is absolutely Outstanding.
I would be just like that.
Excelente vídeo.. Por favor sustitulos...saludos desde México.
u need luck like i do and i live in oregon i get rigs for cheap or free and my 73 ss nova i have 800 in it plus another one i got for 50 bucks both have no rust but the 800 dollar has gauges on floor good body factory paint comp orange with black stripes 396 bb with tunnel ram 400 turbo pro built got it for 200 from the shop new all after market ignition with a msd 7 inkee wheels . now i have question have u ever seen a 79 camero z28 rs t top with full spoiler kit i just got one with a hard top z28 for free . the owner said it was one of a kind because of the full spoiler kit . it was 700 dollar option and know body ever got it , first full spoiler camero i have ever seen . been trying to find one on the net and nothing close to it and it has the real gills on the fender too . most z28 rs cars have stickers for the gills and z28 had the real gills.so far the guy has been right and most camero guy's have no idea what a full spoiler kit is all around the car.but i get stuff like this all the time for free.
Spell it with me C-a-m-a-r-o
@@brandonford8092 i never claim to a good speller just very lucky when it comes to cars and other things . trying to run me down like this is a joke u wish u had my luck don't feel bad so do my friends . i just got a 65 chevy step side with no rust for 100 bucks with factory paint and all complete with the 283 in it . i have 10 acres of good project rigs most don't have rust plus piles of parts .so that would make u not too smart if u ever need parts and i don't need money
40 years ago I helped my cousin piece together a 69 out fo 4 different cars with a 307 Tonawanda and a 3 speed. Had a LOT of fun in the old one wheel peeler!
Thought for sure you would have made more than one pass!
easily 14 second car with 2.73s? I'd say you did real well.
you let off before the finish line its got more left in it....96 mph is a lot faster than 15.0
NICE JOB!! GREAT VIDEO!!
I thought that was Washington. Def Pacific North West...
Eric Ek looks like Auburn and they got the car in Wenatchee
@@trevor9972 I'm in Kitsap, it looks a lot like the other end of Silverdale. For years I wanted to escape this place. I have since accepted my fate and I have grown quite attached to it. I'm a Cali Kid.
Thats not bad at all for your first time with a 3spd manual. An automatic with a shift kit would probably drop a second off your time.
Awesome build man! Subscribed! I was looking at the same wheels, could you tell me what size tires you have in the rear? I could only find those rims in 15x8 with 4.25 backspacing. I’m not sure how big I can go with my tires on that setup.
The slicks are 26 x 9-15 and the wheels are 15" Inch Vision Rally 55 15x7 5x120.7 (5x4.75") +6mm Dark Silver Wheel Rim.
We would have a Chain as a tie down on the driver's side of the motor so you don't break the motor mounts
Yep. You talk about a cheap recall hack job!
well done that was so awesome ..keep at it guys its all about the fun waves from aussie land
I love the 68 through 72/73 Nova body style, I like the 66 and 67 box style too. Are you going to change out the rear end gear ratio? Since it did pretty good with the 2.73s it must have a fair amount torque, I thi I I'd try some 3.73s , 3.90s. I would be concerned that if you went to 4..11s that you would run out of top end before you got past the finish line. Just how far are you going to take this project? Are you going to see just how good of time you can run with it without changing it all, just a little, like the gear set? What about a small nitrous set up and leave the carburetor jets rich.Im also curious on just how much better your time in the quarter would be with an automatic.
See episode 6. ua-cam.com/video/LLRdXuvVFnE/v-deo.html
Now you can try a 5 speed from a s-10
I had many Novas, I think they used 308 gears
All I got to say what he is righteous those are righteous shot you just did good for you
My 68 looks like yours I'm stuffing budget 468 in mine..
I've been kind of skipping parts. What's with the o2 sensor? I didnt see an efi system.
It's a wideband O2 sensor used to see the air fuel ratio to set the jetting on the carb.
Might just be dumb but why’d they put a ss badge on a Chevy nova ?
Because novas were SS models.......... since 64-65.............
Because many Chevy Novas had a Super Sport packages included from factory if so desired.
Because he's a hack.
You had fun doing. It right ? Then it was a win bro it looked like fun to me
fantastic job taking that dreck and turning it into FUN!!
