An original investigative report by Earth Focus and UK's Ecologist Film Unit looks at the risks of natural gas development in the Marcellus Shale. From toxic chemicals in drinking water to unregulated interstate dumping of potentially radioactive waste that experts fear can contaminate water supplies in major population centers including New York City, are the health consequences worth the economic gains?
Marcellus Shale contains enough natural gas to supply all US gas needs for 14 years. But as gas drilling takes place, using a process called hydraulic fracturing or "fracking," toxic chemicals and methane gas seep into drinking water. Now experts fear that unacceptable levels of radioactive Radium 226 in gas development waste.
Fracking chemicals are linked to bone, liver and breast cancers, gastrointestinal, circulatory, respiratory, developmental as well as brain and nervous system disorders. Such chemicals are present in frack waste and may find their way into drinking water and air.
Waste from Pennsylvania gas wells -- waste that may also contain unacceptable levels of radium -- is routinely dumped across state lines into landfills in New York, Ohio and West Virginia. New York does not require testing waste for radioactivity prior to dumping or treatment. So drill cuttings from Pennsylvania have been dumped in New York's Chemung and other counties and liquid waste is shipped to treatment plants in Auburn and Watertown New York. How radioactive is this waste? Experts are calling are for testing to find out.
New York State may have been the first state in the nation to put a temporary hold on fracking pending a safety review, but it allows other states to dump toxic frack waste within its boundaries.
With a gas production boom underway in the Marcellus Shale and plans for some 400,000 wells in the coming decades, the cumulative impact of dumping potential lethal waste without adequate oversight is a catastrophe waiting to happen. And now U.S. companies are exporting fracking to Europe.

A peer reviewed study by scientists published on 3oth October 2014 revealed dangerously high levels of cancer causing chemicals like formaldehyde in the air surrounding fracking sites in 5 states in the US! It's called 'Air concentrations of volatile compounds near oil and gas production: a community-based exploratory study'.
Wow. This is very sad. And we need water for everything including "life" and we're destroying it all. Pretty soon were gonna be paying 10$ for a bottle of water.

@@valeryediamond7249 It's been so long since this video came out that I had to watch it over again. It is so full of disinformation and outright lies that it's almost criminal. Fracing is not a new process, the first well fraced in the US was in 1847 and used dynamite as the fracing medium. They also completely omit the actual method used when drilling and completing a well. Never did they explain how the casing is cemented to isolate the producing level of the well from the actual water bearing formation. These levels are typically several thousand vertical feet apart and are separated by several different layers of " rock" , etc. Some of these levels are impervious to fluid migration, which is what has kept oil and gas bearing zones from combining with water sands over the millennia. It's a shame that people aren't educated well enough to recognize what BULLSHIT is actually being spewed in this video. Educate yourself instead of listening to this kind of crap.
I saw a video of and by a former rancher in Colorado who, as a result of nearby fracking, could no longer use his water for his cattle or horses. His wife subsequently died of cancer and he said he'd had a liver transplant and had moved to another part of the country. Maybe this information can be covered up for awhile, but not forever.
I moved from my hometown six years ago but continue to go back about once a month. Since then the town has had a MAJOR oil boom. Fracking is everywhere. Today when I drive in there is a steady haze covering the ground at sunset. My wife and I both get headaches. This was our home. Where we both grew up. Today it's a toxic shell of its former self.

The Sautners in Dimock, PA sued. Problem was they were phonies and their water was found to be fine by the EPA.

I saw the Sautners on camera blowing up at the EPA for telling them test results showed their water was fine. They refused to let their water be tested afterward and actually called the police to prevent a man from obtaining a sample. This is documented in FrackNation. Give it a look if you care about the other side.
The thinning of Egg shells of birds was a primary concern in the Book called "The Silent Spring". But there were 5 different Government agencies that studied the link, but couldn't find one between Egg shell thickness and DDT usage. But they did find about 3 dozen things that could and did contribute to thinner egg shells, and none of them were ever tied to DDT usage.
It's a crying shame that this documentary will never air on mainsteam tv. It should be shown every hour on every channel on the planet (while we still HAVE a planet!).

I was just in the training program for one of these companies as a Field Geologist. I am a Geography graduate and I was very skeptical of the techniques when I first accepted the job. After spending a week there, not only was the work atmosphere very "militaristic" but after learning about the whole process I just didn't agree. The trainers seemed to make an attempt brainwash all the trainees with how great the process was and falsifying the skeptics.
You obviously did not work in around the Eastern Kentucky region. No water was ever used in the wells on my property and the wells are completely dry except for one that produces crude oil. My wells are completely sealed and the one with crude has a massive holding tank that gets emptied once a month. The wells on my property are sealed and linked directly to distribution lines all across the country. I witnessed the entire process at the well sites on my property and I never heard such as you say or seen any thing as described in this video.

My understanding of natural resource based industries tells me politicians will be paid to do whatever the fracking industry wants. They want to produce as cheap as possible with no regards to long term consequences and sell at as high a price as possible . By the time the environmental effects are a costly problem the company responsible will have tranferred away all profits and bankrupted the production company so tax payers will deal with the long term devastating effects. It is so predictable.

There were intense studies run by at least 5 different federal agencies looking into the toxic side effects of DDT on animals, and found none, even after exposing animals to over 1000 times the amount they would encounter in the environment back in the 1960's and 1970's.
They even looked into the thinning of egg shells of birds and found no link, but they did find about 3 dozen different things that contribute to thinner egg shells, and none of them had anything to do with DDT.

This is a good educational video. New South Wales, Australia, is grappling with this issue as well. The good thing is children can talk about this at school about the experiences from their own family properties, so it's not easily hidden away behind economic and political propaganda speals. To bring the facts home we need street stalls with samples of the soil and water that result from fracking. Inviting the public to have a drink of the water, wash their hands with it, smell it, or water their gardens with it would wake many up.
Watching this as where I live in Lancashire, England, they are proposals for fracking, it is a beautiful landscape and very agriculturally productive, and if this fracking goes ahead it will threaten this, work in hospitality, we might get contractors for a short while but tourists might all go, so jobs gone too

There is inherent risks with all sources of energy, renewable or not. The reason Hydraulic Fracturing has revolutionized the energy business in America is because it 1. Posses minimal environmental impacts (assuming regulations are followed, which operators are inclined to follow closely else paying a large penalty) 2. Creates jobs and encourages economic activity because of its' opened new sources for petroleum. 3. Is the most attractive source of mobile energy (you talk solar and wind, but are you aware of the amount of energy (and pollution) it takes to produce 1 wind turbine, its enormous. If it was better to produce energy from those sources then we would see more people doing it.) We have to remember that we pioneered this business (America), and operators are looking out for the best interest of everyone because that's how the capitalist society works.

Let me give you a relatively accurate analogy as to the comparison between renewables and consumable energy sources.
Would you rather have a cake now and be done with it, or an oreo every day for about a year?
Some people prefer the oreo-a-day scenario, but the thing is that energy itself is cumulative. So, when you take 1 kilo calorie of energy out of the ground, you can use it to take about 6-14 kilo calories out of the ground-- provided that you do it right and have a bit of luck. The renewables do not have that same cumulative effect; in order for a wind-turbine to generate the energy it takes to construct a wind-turbine, or a solar-panel to construct a solar-panel, it would take a pretty darn long time-- especially in comparison to the immediate effect that consumable energies have so long as you've got them.
The better way to do it is to set aside an optimal portion of your consumable energy yield and invest it into renewables as you go. I don't know what the ideal ratio is... but let's say it's 20%-- what this would ensure is that while consumables are cheap, we still benefit considerably from those, but as they get expensive... good thing we have been investing in renewables!

One of the comments asks "how can this be legal?". The answer is because the government agencies that control, test and evaluate this process have not agreed that it is dangerous.
Ok, whom to believe? Some say fracking for gas/oil is the cheapest, cleanest and the most accessible way to get energy in the US, while others insist that fracking is very destructive, contaminating and thus leads to human health deterioration and many environmental problems along the way.
So whom to believe?
Some articles even say, that claystone itself should be extracted and used to get oil/gas products hinting that fracking is resourse wasteful as damaging claystone which is valuable itself.
As for me, stuffing ground with chemicals - while fracking - seems not a very right thing to do, but maybe it is not that bad as it seems to me?
Putting any toxin or poison into the ground is bad, how the heck you gonna get it back out? Before the white man came to North America, the Indians said they could drink from any river or stream. Can you think of any you would drink from? Maybe drive across due to the pollution. When will enough be enough? After every living thing is dead? Preserving what we have should be a priority, not seeing how much more we can destroy! Pure water is our most precious resource, not greatest commodity. There is already a concern on how long it will last. Any ground pollution should be a red flag waving 1,000 feet high for all to see it!
Believe both! Yes its cheap but incredibly detrimental to the environment. Radiation and drinking water do not mix and will always end in disaster.

The BLM no longer has authority to carry out its mission because our seven major environmental laws no longer apply to fracking, so the BLM cannot enforce these laws. The Halliburton Loophole has succeeded in subverting laws that made fracking illegal. The BLM is, in fact, upholding the law by authorizing fracking on public lands. BLM’s mission has been altered by the Halliburton Loophole. The Halliburton Loophole has neutralized the BLM’s power to regulate fracking. BLM may now protect the environment as long as these protections do not impinge on business practices.

fracking happens thousands of feet below the water table. The only way it goes wrong is when driller makes a mistake. They should pay for their mistake but it's not actually fracking that's the problem.

Chemicals are added to the water to facilitate the underground fracturing process that releases natural gas. Fracturing fluid is primarily water and approximately 0.5% chemical additives. Since millions of liters of water are used, this means that hundreds of thousands liters of chemicals are often injected into the subsurface. About 50% to 70% of the injected volume of contaminated water is recovered and stored in above-ground ponds.

Fracking is the leading cause of ground water contamination in the world. Yes I said world. Feed lots I believe are the next most unregulated if not the next most pollutant of ground water. I could be wrong though.
The companies and individuals should be self regulating themselves or the government will have to.
Years ago, and I mean quite a few years, the trucking company was self regulated. Then a few companies and individuals started cutting corners and got the whole industry in trouble. Once the government steps in to regulate, it will be there forever.

The leading cause of groundwater pollution is underground storage tanks and faulty septic tanks both of which are at or above water tables in most cases. Not one mile (5280 ft) Below the water table. The fracking industry polices itself very effectively both environmentally and in safety as well as by the EPA, DEP ( in PA), OSHA and other bureaucratic organizations.

What these people fail to realize or just neglect to say is that 100% of the chemicals used in fracking are found in your kitchen and food products already. And as for contaminated water, did they test the water before drilling began or only after? In most of the US the water table only extends to about 2000 feet. Standard practice for rigs both oil and gas is to drill and encase wells to 5000 feet before fracking at depths of kore than 5000 feet. So drinking water and the water table as a whole are minimally affected.

Fracking can be effective for everyone if done right. There is no need to ban it completely, but regulations on this process are necessary.

Invest in alternative energy to save the planet and human beings
The problem with every option is that if hydraulic fracturing was banned or didn't exist in the first place, heating bills would skyrocket, energy bills would become virtually impossible to afford, and gas prices would jump so high that people just wouldn't drive anymore. Every person in this video wouldn't be able to afford basic heating, gas for their equipment and cars on a farm, and their entire dreams wouldn't have existed in the first place. Rather than have a small house that they can survive through the harsh East Coast winters, they would have a dream to have that house that they could survive in. The farms that were "struggling to be profitable" would be shut down instantly, because equipment and basic necessities would become too expensive to afford, so why shut down their source of reasonably cheap energy?

Current practice is to sweep problems to maximize profit. Individually the way all of us can help is to simplify our lives and reduce our own personal use of both electricity, until truly clean, and petroleum products. If all people actually had a moral compass, not religion by the way, imagine what the world could be.

gashole was better, here in tara qld and surrounding areas is the largest fracking mining in Australia, years ago when it first started the kids starting getting blood noses, later blood cancers started dramatically increasing in the community yet NOTHING TO SEE HERE and after that people started leaving the area, you can buy land absolutely dirt cheap in the area, the gas companies can come onto your land and drill gas wells and legally you cant stop them if you try youll be charged and fined, they give you $3000 au a year for the privalidge, each gas well pipes constantly vent large volumes of methane , brainless to me , it should be put to use. i worked in drilling my brother still does. where my freind lives in idaho he showed radon from his and so he moved to texas.
Thing is, if any domestic water becomes contaminated here in the UK, the company responsible will pay for drinking water for those affected for life. This happened in Jersey airport. If we use gas, and we demand gas, and it is under our feet, then we should have it. But we should drive the regulations to prevent disasters. Mining coal was pretty bad for land, water and air pollution. At least with this gas we won't leave vast chasms waiting to collapse, destroying housing as a result

Some of the things that contributed to thinner egg shells of birds were higher ages of the birds, droughts, change in diet, predatory animals disturbing their nests, humans disturbing their nest, etc., ... just to name a few.
But DDT showed to be no contribution to thinner egg shells in birds as was widely reported in popular media.
I live right next to a "brine" injection well with another 6 within 1½ mi. everyday I worry about long before my well water is destroyed. I live 2 miles from the PA state line and 10 mi from Lake Erie and ¾ of the trucks have PA plates because our EPA was paid for by fracking Companies. I'm in a squeeze play because 45 miles upwind is a nuke plant and another (which has had containment cracks) 120 mi to the west. NOW... The Cleveland Browns stadium carries the "First Energy" naming rights and who do you think pays that? This is October 30, 2019 and they want 2 BILLION to bail-out the nuke plants. Worse, I don't have a choice on my electricity except First Energy, so its not like I just don't buy their product as a protest FOLLOW THE MONEY!

Fracking works and does less harm than other methods of gaining energy. Electric batteries in cars and other devices create a larger carbon footprint than fracking or gasoline engines. The only reason fracking is receiving bad PR is because of big name companies that are scared of this profitable safe method, so they're publishing false information about fracking to scare people and pit them against it.

These wells are producing oil/gas from over a mile and a half below the water table. Concrete surface casing is used well below the water table.

I've done some research and found mostly disturbing information from different sources, including studies from Uk, Netherlands, Netherlands and Russia. Corporations pay our politicians legalized bribes called campaign contributions and the industry literally regulates itself. The EPA is run by former energy sector employees who will ensure there are no environment protections and after a few years they will get an even better job in the energy sector. Our government is simply a bunch of cartels making a disaster of everything they touch all with short term gains in mind.

During the drilling process there's NO hazardous chemicals used to punch the hole in the ground
And so you will know there was natural gas seeping up out of the ground way before a drilling showed up in your area it's a natural process.

If you are against fracking and drilling for oil, then I sure hope you don't drive a car, use electricity, or use any plastic products.
This is one of the ways they will pollute the water, when drilling there are open fractures in the ground and the drilling fluid will travel into that fracture, this is called lost circulation, well if they lose circulation they could pump upwards of 10,000 + barrels of fluid into that fracture until it plugs up. that fracture could be where your drinking water is ??? But also remember there are no harsh chemicals used during the drilling procedure that would cause harm to your body ..
Do you realize that the earth in which this fracking solution is pumped (which is mostly sand and water) is filled with hydrocarbons, gas, oil, etc? It's already poisonous down there. The fracking does not take place where there is water.

People don't understand the nature of natural gas as it's use is being discussed concerning locomotives. As the name implies, it's a gas, not a liquid. Propane is transported as a liquid. Liquid is much denser than gas, and therefore contains much, much more energy. Because natural gas is much lighter, you can't compress enough into a tank to give you any range. That,s why you see this fuel used only in cities where they can fuel up many times each day. It would be an infinitely impractical fuel for railroads or cross country travel in trucks or cars.
Did a quick search and it would look like the majority of Europe is against fracking, or wants it seriously scrutinized and regulated despite efforts of US lobbying, instead choosing for more reliable safer means of renewable energy...

FYI, I live in town (Paris - France), I sort my rubbish since the age of 16 (I'm 56) I don't smoke, I don't drink alcohol, I don't eat meat and as an at-home music teacher, I ride my bicycle in town and near suburbs of Paris (a real bike, not an electrical one ...), making an average of 140 km per week (about 86 miles). I'm not an activist, just a citizen concerned by his health and those of his children and relatives. Europe is also threatened by fracking.
The environment is not as DE gradated when humans use crude oil instead of whales, walruses, orcas, seals, elephants, rhinos and trees. Which is what we were doing before we discovered over 10 million different things we could make from crude oil.
Crude oil doesn't require us to kill a single plant or animal to explore for it, drill for it or use it. Sure, sometimes accidents happen, but it is not by design or a requirement.
I lived in a county that has a low population to land ratio and was predominately agriculture. Yet, it has the highest rates of cancer than anywhere in the USA. This is an area of the first settlements in the USA. The farming has been going on for generations. It is just now that they are linking row crop farming to be the direct link and cause of the cancers through ground water. 3 years is not nearly enough to see some effects. Remember, out of sight out of mind...don't let them fool you.

The real problem in NB is that the gov't has been supporting SWN instead listening to the concerns of its people. As a result, the RCMP have been protecting and supporting the SWN workers as well. It has caused a lot of frustration. Don't you think it is a little suspicious that the morning of the violence RCMP were recommending that people on the highway find alternate routes for their own safety? This was hours before the violence started. Things are not always as they seem.
A representative from exxon mobile was invited to my community for an industry day. He stated the faucets on fire was a myth, water being contaminated was a myth. He also stated that the amount of water needed were a small footprint. I then asked if that because you will bring in water from other sources and call it new water to the area? he shut up and i shook his hand, left him with his lies.

Isolated? The fact that underwater aquifers are contaminated means it isn't isolated. The contamination can not be contained or controlled under the ground. The one thing that can be controlled is what they tell us. Out of sight, out of mind perhaps!?
I bet that the wear and tear to the roads from all of the trucking is costlier than the benefits to the communities in terms of spinnoffs and royalties.
