It's America's controversial answer to an energy-secure future. But with questions remaining about damage to the environment and people's health, fracking is causing a major rift across affected communities.
"It's the answer to our local economy, our national economy, our state economy and it is the new foreign policy", says Doug McClinko, County Commissioner of Towanda, Pennsylvania. The area is rich in shale gas and to many like Doug, fracking is the key to a more self-reliant and secure future. In an area where rural livelihoods are under intense strain, the personal incentives for opening the door to fracking is clear: "It puts kids into college". But as global oil prices plummet, ripping profits from under landowners' feet, and more and more residents report severe water contamination, questions are coming to the fore and dividing communities. For Ray Kemble, a notable anti-fracking activist whose water began running green after the wells popped up, the benefits are nowhere to be seen. "They've destroyed my life", he says.

I love it when hundreds of private wells are contaminated, but they say theirs no proof that fracking had anything to do with it. Common sense is out the window whenever profits are a stake.
Midas Snap remember the source is JourneyMan pictures a very left wing outfit. The same people who said 6 years ago we were about to run out of oil. We are now flooded with oil
"Hundreds," numbers please.
I'm so sorry. I'm sorry that our country feels that oil/gas is more important than your life and all those suffering from it's shameful activity. We are fighting it here in Michigan also. OUr governor says it won't happen to use, because we have better rules. I say you can't regulate this technology. It's just not safe
I'm sick of seeing our lands and our Great Lakes polluted by corporate greed. I'm sick of Flint's crisis. I'm sick of shoe-makers putting toxins in my community water supply. I'm sick of chemicals infesting our streams and ponds and lakes and swamps and groundwater. I'm sick of seeing pipelines in Lake Michigan burst and kill animals and plants.
We need a better solution. We need to end corporate greed. This has to stop.
It sincerely saddens me that we're willing to damage the planet and endanger ourselves and the wildlife around us just to get cheaper fuel. I really wish my state didn't allow this.
mw2proshot do you realize without oil the forest would be stripped in 5 minutes for firewood. In the 1800s, the forest were wiped out until oil heating came along. Oil has saved the forest
garybsg Yes but this isn't the 1800's anymore you fruitcake. holy fucking shit your comment gives me a headache.
Martin Skevla His thought process...
Hydro electric plants power upstate New York and they have for years. I had electric heating my whole life. Still do never relied on oil.
So much fail in his comment.
Absolutely criminal.
Chris Dorman Absolutely unread.....:)
Chris Dorman Really....;)
BP is responsible for close to $40 billion in fines, cleanup costs, and settlements as a result of the oil spill in 2010, with an additional $16 billion due to the Clean Water Act.
And...
Math not a strength?? :)
English not a trait for you?
Fracking hell.
Good thing america is a democracy and the people have more say over corporations. Phew!
imtehshit Sarcasm I presume :P
imtehshit You are joking, right? The U.S. is not a democracy. It is controlled by the corporations. Any first grader can understand that.
When Doug McClinko said, "It is the new foreign policy," I couldn't help but think about Rex Tillerson
Bernie Sanders has proposed to ban Fracking in the US. Bernie Sanders 2016
no hassle Glad he didn't get elected, I would be out of a job. #Trump2020
My homeowners insurance rates went up 25% last year due to hail damage all over the state. This year they will go up again due to massive tornadoes. In the future when our coastlines disappear due to rising sea level, that will also have a price. Of course the oil and gas industry reimburses us all for these incidental expenses they cause - just like they paid my daughter's asthma costs all year. Aren't we lucky that those frackers are such nice people?
As soon as you stand up for your rights, there's your visit from Homeland Security!
Thank you for fighting for compensation and clean water. We need more heros like you. We need an ethical world. If sustainability and environment were a priority you and all of us would be kinder and healthier. Thank You. I hope the best for you. ❤
The entire state is so corrupt.
I live in, and went to Montrose High School. I am a co-landowner, and this man is right...I gotta get with him.
Go to Ohio if you wish to cover fracking. Its a know fact new york is one of the worst when it comes to extracting natural gases or oil. Its funny how everywhere else you don't see these problems except New York. Sad to see how this doesn't even cover how we have actually improved extraction techniques to make any risks minimal to none.

Due to the Fracks the wells are connected and THAT's why the casing failures are happening!!!!!
Literally surrounded by well-casing failure sites. High levels of contamination from chemicals and gases associated with fracking. And the EPA says they can't figure out what's happening. I'd say your EPA is probably corrupt
Screw tracking and all the greedy companies - and it's workers - that have no regard for the rights of these property owners and the environmental safety of our land.
Fish die under the ice if it's a hard freeze. It happened to our ponds multiple times.
Everyone of these advocates have a gas stove, gas water heater. The one woman saying the casing broke, she has now idea how much casing and cement is involved in drilling. Theres no problems in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, California, the list goes on. Educate yourself before you assume a door hearsay.
I don't understand why there is still such a demand for Oil and Natural Gas. You can buy Split Ductless Heat Pumps to both Heat and Cool your home, and you can get units that are rated to produce Heat to Minus 20c. With my Split Ductless system, my average Hydro Bill in the Winter is between $50 - $100 Per Month and only $30 Per Month in the Spring and Summer for a 2,000 sq. ft. home.
In Europe, EV car sales make up 20% - 50% of New Car Sales while in America they only make up 3% of New Car Sales. North and South America and every other Country need to get with the Program. Oil and Gas is NOT the Future of this Planet.
wow putting the fish on land will now kill other life sources.
THANK YOU FOR FIGHTING. STAY STRONG, STAY HEALTHY. GOD BLESS YOU
Not enough grown men are crying, meaning the ones doing this. Real men cry and wont want a dime and want to warn others of the dangers of this. Thank you sir in the beginning..you made me cry! I'm litterly outraged at what they have done in every area they can in the united states!!! Learned of this late. Now hearing people cough families that come down with cancer..this is the root cause and we have to dig up these roots and replant!
So how much money is it worth to destroy the land forever
Good job on this video. It's true it's cracking the earth like never before.
EPA 4 YEAR STUDY FOUND NO HARM TO WATER--- READ ARTICLE BELOW
WASHINGTON POST:By Joby Warrick June 4 at 12:29 PM
um just wondering why none of the people with well issues, have any supportive documentation stating their water had none of these chemicals in their water prior to fracking in their areas? kinda one sided i would think..
So the middle class, Sanders... Warren..., regulations..., environment...
I didn't get to lease my land but my well is polluted give me money ...please
I like that one guy , 1100 gallons a week for his family of 5 or 6. hehehe
$4.5 million in that court case
I am so sick of destructive ways , bann fraking , and flaring gas wells .
I hear that water has been able to catch on fire in some places even before fracking
I remember the pre-ban discussions over NY state fracking. I was wary of drilling into the part of the state where we get our drinking water. I know the job-desperate blue collar boys couldn't care less, but the need clean water too. Everything in their lives relies on clean water. Do they want to pay $25 for beer?
that's too bad for that older guy with the beard, now his property will be virtually worthless and he has no actions or remedies to pursue against these huge corporations or the government. thank goodness i don't live in a place where they are fracking for oil.
if you guys could, please pursue a documentary covering the bakken oil fields williston, N.D....i think that would be very exciting (and not just conveying the fracking aspect, but also about the life there and the criminal element, theft, criminal activity, raging alcoholism, prostitution, drug abuse, and the expensive rent that rivals NYC costs.
you love your suv but hate fracking
Very sad.
how much was this guy paid!!??
Where do you all think the oil in your car and the gas In Your car comes from. I bet most of you heat your home with natural gas. Everything we do has concequnces. This shit don't jist apear. I cracked for a number of years in pa wv and oh we never had a problem. Yes it happens but its not a common thing. Quit heating your house and driving your cars then. It all comes from drilling and fracking.
What a pack of fracking lies. Jesus Christ.
The biggest problem with the test results of peoples wells is the baseline. What did the water test like before fracking?
14:40 that aint real good testing, that lazy woman aint testing the entire lake.. pond whateva, she shoulda used a boat.
Get one scientist on here next time...
Can any of you pro-fracking people carry on a conversation without insults?
Aram Attarian Yeah I can, can an anti-fracking person do the same though?
It is going to cost them more to fix it that denial i am think Sherry is in bed with the fracking company's
What the frack is going on here?!?!?
It is simple , if you'r against petroleum, don't use products made from the stuff

Journeyman Pictures Please make a documentary about the Bakken oil fields (North Dakota, USA) & the proposed pipelines to the southern states! Thank You!
"My waters not safe to drink",takes a puff and tosses cigar away.
Lmfao and ANOTHER video about fracing but all you have is drilling rig photos 😂😂😂😂😂
When their patsies declare water as 'fit to drink', they should have to back it up by agreeing to themselves and their immediate family drinking a pint each!
Why is it so often our elected 'representatives' that so heartily evangelise the magic blinkered benefits of fracking?
