It's America's controversial answer to an energy-secure future. But with questions remaining about damage to the environment and people's health, fracking is causing a major rift across affected communities.
"It's the answer to our local economy, our national economy, our state economy and it is the new foreign policy", says Doug McClinko, County Commissioner of Towanda, Pennsylvania. The area is rich in shale gas and to many like Doug, fracking is the key to a more self-reliant and secure future. In an area where rural livelihoods are under intense strain, the personal incentives for opening the door to fracking is clear: "It puts kids into college". But as global oil prices plummet, ripping profits from under landowners' feet, and more and more residents report severe water contamination, questions are coming to the fore and dividing communities. For Ray Kemble, a notable anti-fracking activist whose water began running green after the wells popped up, the benefits are nowhere to be seen. "They've destroyed my life", he says.

I love it when hundreds of private wells are contaminated, but they say theirs no proof that fracking had anything to do with it. Common sense is out the window whenever profits are a stake.

I'm so sorry. I'm sorry that our country feels that oil/gas is more important than your life and all those suffering from it's shameful activity. We are fighting it here in Michigan also. OUr governor says it won't happen to use, because we have better rules. I say you can't regulate this technology. It's just not safe

I'm sick of seeing our lands and our Great Lakes polluted by corporate greed. I'm sick of Flint's crisis. I'm sick of shoe-makers putting toxins in my community water supply. I'm sick of chemicals infesting our streams and ponds and lakes and swamps and groundwater. I'm sick of seeing pipelines in Lake Michigan burst and kill animals and plants.
We need a better solution. We need to end corporate greed. This has to stop.

It sincerely saddens me that we're willing to damage the planet and endanger ourselves and the wildlife around us just to get cheaper fuel. I really wish my state didn't allow this.

mw2proshot do you realize without oil the forest would be stripped in 5 minutes for firewood. In the 1800s, the forest were wiped out until oil heating came along. Oil has saved the forest

My homeowners insurance rates went up 25% last year due to hail damage all over the state. This year they will go up again due to massive tornadoes. In the future when our coastlines disappear due to rising sea level, that will also have a price. Of course the oil and gas industry reimburses us all for these incidental expenses they cause - just like they paid my daughter's asthma costs all year. Aren't we lucky that those frackers are such nice people?

Go to Ohio if you wish to cover fracking. Its a know fact new york is one of the worst when it comes to extracting natural gases or oil. Its funny how everywhere else you don't see these problems except New York. Sad to see how this doesn't even cover how we have actually improved extraction techniques to make any risks minimal to none.

Literally surrounded by well-casing failure sites. High levels of contamination from chemicals and gases associated with fracking. And the EPA says they can't figure out what's happening. I'd say your EPA is probably corrupt

Everyone of these advocates have a gas stove, gas water heater. The one woman saying the casing broke, she has now idea how much casing and cement is involved in drilling. Theres no problems in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, California, the list goes on. Educate yourself before you assume a door hearsay.

I don't understand why there is still such a demand for Oil and Natural Gas. You can buy Split Ductless Heat Pumps to both Heat and Cool your home, and you can get units that are rated to produce Heat to Minus 20c. With my Split Ductless system, my average Hydro Bill in the Winter is between $50 - $100 Per Month and only $30 Per Month in the Spring and Summer for a 2,000 sq. ft. home.
In Europe, EV car sales make up 20% - 50% of New Car Sales while in America they only make up 3% of New Car Sales. North and South America and every other Country need to get with the Program. Oil and Gas is NOT the Future of this Planet.

I'm litterly outraged at what they have done in every area they can in the united states!!! Learned of this late. Now hearing people cough families that come down with cancer..this is the root cause and we have to dig up these roots and replant!

I remember the pre-ban discussions over NY state fracking. I was wary of drilling into the part of the state where we get our drinking water. I know the job-desperate blue collar boys couldn't care less, but the need clean water too. Everything in their lives relies on clean water. Do they want to pay $25 for beer?

that's too bad for that older guy with the beard, now his property will be virtually worthless and he has no actions or remedies to pursue against these huge corporations or the government. thank goodness i don't live in a place where they are fracking for oil.
if you guys could, please pursue a documentary covering the bakken oil fields williston, N.D....i think that would be very exciting (and not just conveying the fracking aspect, but also about the life there and the criminal element, theft, criminal activity, raging alcoholism, prostitution, drug abuse, and the expensive rent that rivals NYC costs.

I cracked for a number of years in pa wv and oh we never had a problem. Yes it happens but its not a common thing. Quit heating your house and driving your cars then. It all comes from drilling and fracking.
