  • Workers for a Free Palestine mobilised hundreds of workers and trade unionists to shut down the Department of Business and Trade - which oversees arms exports to Israel - on International Workers’ Day, in response to a call from Palestinian trade unions for workers around the world to mobilise on May Day in solidarity with Palestinian workers.
The action was coordinated with actions across the UK shutting down BAE Systems’ arms factories.
As the onslaught on Gaza reaches its 208th day today, with 35,000 Palestinians having been killed, the British Government still refuses to place an embargo on arms supplies to Israel as its allies Canada, the Netherlands, Japan, Spain and Belgium have. So British workers are taking it upon themselves to enforce an embargo through direct action.
PCS members working in the building were in full support of the action, as they demand to not have to work on arms exports and be complicit in war crimes. The union is currently looking at taking legal action against the Government to halt the work.
As the slaughter continues, it's time for workers in all sectors complicit in manufacturing, exporting and transporting arms to Gaza to follow this example, and stand up and take action.
