I LOVE my set. I have had them for years. Got them from Island Bagpipe. Engraved nickel silver ( i think) with boxwood mounts. Amazing set. Competed in the CA and won a few medals and trophies with them. And every time I finished my tune in competition the judge would always ask who made my pipes. Don't compete anymore. But, still play. Great videos.
Hi matt, I'd love to see you compare a modern day set of bagpipes and an old set would love to see that
I'm from Scotland and I'd wake up to the sound of the highland bagpipes.
It's kind of Ironic when you see an a grade piper with a really old set of pipes set up really beautifully. great video, love your reviews of the full pipes. The blowpipe and stocks are fully blackwood right, just hardies that have poly on the inside.
Tim Gellaitry apprenticed and worked for years as a journeyman at William Sinclair and sons before starting his own pipe-making business
I had to turn the volume up a bit through my stereo but I liked the Overtones, Kinnairds, then Ezee/Balance tone. It was hard to tell a difference until I turned the volume up and could hear more of the harmonics. Beautiful looking and sounding pipes!
What a stunning set! Best imitation ivory I've seen.
I totally agree!
Hey Matt. Nice pipes for sure
-drone reeds. Definitely love the Kinnaird set. Love the “snappy-ness” of them. I currently have their Evolutions in mine and love them.
Nice Pipes !
I love Kinnaird sound. I play them into a Keith Jeffers set, astonishing.
Hi Matt, The drone reeds sounded similar, but I think the third set sounded the best, although all the drone reeds sounded great.
If I could add to the existing video here, I'd say this set of pipes is the least changed in tone by drone reeds than any other set I've played, and I think that's clear in listening to these drones. I think that speaks volumes for the quality of this instrument. This is an heirloom set, for sure.
Beautiful pipes, wonder if they are crafted in the same bore set as Sinclairs ? They sounded great, I liked the Kinnairds best. Did you notice any differences in pressure of the various drone reeds ? Might note, I play a beautiful set of 1979-80, Silver/Ivory Sinclair's made by Tim Gellaitry himself. Beautiful classic pipes.
What is the deepest bass drone reed available? I would really like to see some sort of comparison between reeds.
I think the Balance Tone is problem one of the louder bass drones, but they all are the same pitch (as that's determined more by the length of the drone).
Gorgeous pipes. Definitely the Acklands, then Kinnairds…
Just can’t beat those Acklands!
Gorgeous pipes definitely the acklands then kinniards just can't beat these ackland highland bagpipes.
Hey Matt, hopefully not too out from left field here, but would you consider doing a review on the kelt drone reeds. I've read some stunning reviews but i'd love to see a play test and what you're thinking is on them. Cheers!
If someone sends me a set, I'll happily review them.
I put the speaker to my ear blind, I heard change in the chanter ,just slight change in hz .... the drones all sounded great, think I heard a bit lower pitch "gurgle" in the base but when watching I couldn't tell which set lol ... no vote from me ... awesome tuning all way round 👍
The temperature in my office kept rising as I was filming, so you heard right, the pitch climbed as I kept playing, so there is a bit of pitch shifting when going between drone reed sets at the end. Good ear!
@@MattWillisBagpiper after you mentioned your ofice temp changing your reed I realized mine were drying out after they sat for a day...(or a week lol)I got a pipers pal reed protector/humidor .....I use to tune for an hour moving bridals only to get tired of it , lay down my pipes and a day later my reed changed drastically .....now it keeps pitch and damp,5 minuits on sliders and shes a go... I love it 🤗
What is the feel of the engraving like on the metalwork? I had a set of pipes a few years ago from a very well known maker and the surface of the engraving was scratchy and not smooth at all. Polishing the slides and ferules left little tufts of cloth behind as the cloth snagged on the engravings. If I had the money again (if I win the lottery), there’s no way I’d get them again.
This was quite smooth. I mean, where you see a "sharp" edge is a 90° angle, but there's no burrs or scratchiness to grab a cloth. The knotwork/runes themselves had a lovely rounded feel to the edges. The engraving on this set was by Truehand Engraving, I suspect the leader in hand-engraved mounts. Would you feel comfortable emailing the maker in question *I won't share publicly)? matt@mattpiper.com
Hi Matt - Started learning the pipes maybe too late. How do you train muscle memory - I tend to mix tunes. Ps I’m using an antique Robertson - did a tune test, and after 50 years unplayed, it’s perfectly tuned.
You need to be able to readily sing the tune. I don't mix up tunes I can readily sing aloud. Congrats on the Robertsons! Fantastic pipes. Most consistent classic bagpipe out there.
I thought his pipes were in traditional A?
The only maker I’m aware of making concert A=440 pipes is Hamish Moore.
Please tell me the name of March of your all vedios 1st entry March and your this March u have played seen in your vedio
The intro "theme"? That's "All the Blue Bonnets Are Over the Border" Link to whole performance here: bit.ly/BlueBonnets
Kinda makes you want to "Highland charge" down a hill at the bloody English, doesn't it? ;)
Cool
Is that an Adam Neely lick shirt?!
Yessir!
Heyy Matt, I was just wondering what the price of these pipes were. I’m playing a set of DN3s and I really enjoy them.
These are £1850 for the sticks and stocks (no chanter). So you'd need to add bag, chanter, reeds, etc. And they are for sale!
I know you probably get questions like this all the time but I bought a cheap practice chanter and for one, I physically CAN NOT overblow it, and typically I can't get the low notes to sound low. They always come out in a very high octave. Should I just break down and buy a new chanter?
Most likely the reed. I’d get a Frazer, an Abbott original, and a Walsh and see what happens. If they still squeal, get a new chanter (I recommend the Hardie twist trap), but you now have several great spare reeds. 👍👍
Matt Willis Bagpiper thank you!!
I like the Kinnaird reeds, but have to admit I didn't hear a huge difference. I've had a set of Tims pipes for 5 years now, and love them. I play with Selbie reeds and they're very stable, I've had the same experience of thinking one of the tenors has cut out when they're both playing in perfect unison. I just wish I played better, the pipes deserve someone who can really make them sing...
Unboxing highland pipes.
Does Tim Gellaitry have a website ?
Not that I'm aware of... That said, this set here is for sale. Sticks and stocks (no chanter) for 1850 pounds sterling. I could set them up with bag/chanter/reeds for addition fee.
Tim has a Facebook page so you can probably contact him through that.
@@MattWillisBagpiper I wish I could, I'm about a year and a half away from being able to buy another set. Thanks though, that is a beautiful set. One of my old band mates has a maple set made by Tim.
@@1humac Thanks, I'll look it up
Quite a deal, and professionally set up too!
Very hard to compare the three sets of drones ! It's funny how my initial choice has been turned upside down when you mixed them. Initially I would have said ackland/kinnaird/eeze but in the end, kinnaird went last. Not sure to say it in English, but there is some kind of 'treble'. Ackland are smoother. But for a good bass presence, eeze are the best. For this song, eeze are probably not the best. Ackland would be.
I forgot how Refined this brand is
Absolutely incredible pipes.
Matt, has anyone ever told you that you are a spitting image of Michael Stipe from REM??
I've been told that by many, but I have to admit, I don't see it, other than we're two thin, bald guys....
My ear prefers the Kinnairds...then the first set 2nd.
Have you ever played a set of pipes with real ivory mounts?? I have a set of old Sinclair's that i estimate they were manufactured sometime in the 1940s with real ivory mounts that I inherited from my late great uncle
I have played many sets with ivory mounts. Absolutely stunning material, though in each case, knowing its source kept me from choosing to own them, and instead finding other buyers for them. That said, there was a 1941 set of cocus wood Robertsons mounted in ivory and silver and I would absolutely make those one of my primary sets based on the tone alone.
@@MattWillisBagpiper yes, knowing the source is a bit off puting, but the sound you get from sets of pipes from that time is absolute stunning, with the right reed combination, they would stand out like crazy
How much $$$$ ?
Those sold for around $2000 if I recall...
#1
Kinnaird
If you want us to hear the quality of the drones and not your g5 piping turn around
