Marko Hietala is one of the most respected pioneers of Finnish metal and was active long before he came to Nightwish. The song "Tides" performed with his own band "Tarot" is a good starting place to explore his varied solo career. The live version titled "Tarot: Undead Indeed 06 Tides" is the best video out there of this song.
Also love his many collaborations with sooooo many others. (Ayreon one of my faves)

The Islander was my gateway drug to Nightwish
Marco is absolutely incredible. He makes it all look so effortless. This was after he had had a botched surgery where the surgeon damaged his vocal cords. He retrained himself how to do certain singing techniques. I've always loved their song "Elan", which also is very different from their usual sound.

Mentioned below, While Your Lips are Still Red from Wembley 2015. If you haven't done it (I dont remember), High Hopes from Hartwall Areena 2005 is the ultimate Marco.
Also please check out his solo work. A good place to start is The Voice of My Father from his album Pyre of the Black Heart.

Marko can be soft and sweet when it's needed (in bridges like this) there is also While Your Lips are Still Red, from Wembley same year I believe, another beautiful ballad

Marko brought the music with him from Tarot, his band he sang lead in before joining Nightwish, it didn't fit with them. Tuomas heard Marko playing it one day, decided that it would make a good song, and wrote the lyrics about a lonely Lighthouse keeper. The studio version is on the 2007 Dark passion Play album, first record with Anette on vocals.

I think that, since these two last songs (Sleeping Sun and Islander) were quite soft and calm it's time to go back to some of the heavier stuff. So I would recommend :

I like it when people watch the introduction with Marko speaking before the song, it often feels like people don't really register that the band comes from Finland, a country with a very different language from english, so they are flabbergasted. Fun fact, by default every Finn knows three languages by the time they reach age of 16 (finnish, english, swedish) and on top of that you can study pretty much any language there is, it depends on the options in school curriculum and online courses. To me english is more like a second language rather than swedish, I also have basics in japanese and russian, with some bits and pieces in spanish.
Another Jansen on the background: Irene Jansen. Two days ago appeared a new song of Arjen Lukassen ( Ayreon) with Irene as background singer. The song is ‘ When The Morning Comes’ . Not bad the Jansen sisters😊

I know what you mean about the apparent lack of egos in NW. No showing off or grandstanding. Of course, the songs are crafted in such a way that there is no room for much of that stuff anyway. When the song calls for a particular musician to be highlighted, they are. Not for who they are, but for what they can do with their instrument and how it fits into the song as a whole. There is an air of humility about the members of the band. They are master's of their craft that get pleasure from sharing their music with their fans. Not for their own glory, but for the shared enjoyment of the music itself. It is evident in every live performance. IMHO, that is one of the reasons NW is better experienced live, ideally with video. Studio recordings just can't capture the on-stage chemistry that the band has.
Marko co-wrote this song. He has a soul of a fireside singer. Just him and his acoustic guitar around the fire.

Enjoyed your reaction. Music by Marko, Lyrics by Tuomas. Marko had written the music but decided it wasn't a good fit for his band Tarot so he brought it to Nightwish. To get more of Marko's beautiful voice check out While Your Lips are Still Red live from Wembley. A beautiful tribute to innocent young love. Marko's voice is full of emotion and vulnerability. But my favorite Marko Nightwish song is Endlessness from the Human Nature album. Beautiful song about life and death. Last song on Disc 1 of the album and a fitting last song for Marko to sing with Nightwish before deciding to leave the band. Never performed live since he left before touring had resumed nor do I think it ever will be since it is a Marko song. His solo stuff is amazing. "Voice of My Father" is my favorite. It's in Finnish and English but i prefer the Finnish version. Such a beautiful language.

I think you may be just about ready for The Greatest Show On Earth - although maybe do Poet and the Pendulum first to kind of get into the longer songs :) Both absolutely amazing songs!

BTW, he can also sing opera tenor quite well. To see the quintessential example, look for the duet he does with Floor of Ave Maria at Raskasta Juolua (I spelled it wrong, so don't crucify me dear readers). There are two professionally recorded clips of that easily found on UA-cam. In the newer version Floor is wearing a white angel-like gown, but I personally prefer the older version where she is in black leather; not because of the wardrobe, just because I think the overall recording quality and video come across as a more satisfying presentation.

I am SICK of marco and his bullshit disingenuous reasoning for leaving nightwish..!!! " I have been contemplating leaving nightwish because of the music scene and it's greedy positioning". So what is this guys answer to his "heartache" for moving on???? He IMMEDIATELY moves into a position to where the few musical opportunities that he moved into are CREATED AROUND HIM AND HIS ON STAGE EGO!!!! It is because of ego's like this that so many many bands lose their stride in the industry. I realize that it will be years until Nightwish will be able to recapture their monentume. But SHAME on this megalomaniac!!!
Did it ever went through your mind that maybe he was sincère but that, after à few month home, he realised he misses music ? Then, getting back into Nightwish would have meant causing Jukka to be fired, totally unfair to him. Or maybe he decided to come back on a solo project because he wanted something smaller
