When I ran out of paper during lockdown, the art stores were closed... so I got creative and used the back boards of my paper pads. So lovely if you use gesso... that’s how I found your channel too
Loved this demo, Susan, thank you. None of your videos are crazy, girl, they are very informative and just so fun to watch. I enjoyed my dinner while watching you tonight. It helped take my mind off of my healthy (boring) dinner. lol I was really amazed at the layering you got on that brown paper too and it is nice to not have to wear out one's fingers by blending on sanded paper. I have an entire set of Jackson pastels which are very similar to Unison, so I think I will try them on the brown paper. And I love that it is made in the United States too! Thanks for your videos, love them. xoxo
Hello Susan... I had a flash when I saw the "Brown paper bag" just when I though I've seen it all; this turned out so great. If I had a dollar for ever drawing I've seen on brown paper. Your Hubby, as a craftsman will know this one. I was in Mulberry at the phosphate plant. I was ask to go down to Sun City at a Teco facility. A contractor was having a problem with the engineering plans. When I arrived, once he settled down, I found he was missing a structural cross-section. With no drawing tool on hand, I took a brown McD's bad; along with my framing square that has 1/12 th on one side. And within an hour or so, I drew out all the measurements he needed - to scale. After the job was completed. At the office they had the brown McD's bag framed as an example of what it means to be 'Resourceful' I'm sorry, it just excited me to see you do this piece ;) Your such a great Artist' JP
Oh that is such a wonderful story about the McD's bag!! Sometimes we just have to work with what we have right!!!:) I call my husband, MacGyver, because he can always make something work even with limited resources. Sounds like you are that way too!!
I bought a set of cheap pastels. Didn’t know a thing about them other than I’ve used a little with watercolor paintings. I’m so happy to have found your channel. Now to buy a more expensive set! Thank you so much for sharing your talent and experience! 💗
I tried painting with pastels on brown paper! I love it! I ordered the brown paper from Amazon. I shared my picture on Monet Cafe. Thank you so much!!! 👍😊👩🎨❤️
So great! I've been doing a 15 minute per day challenge with a friend, and this will be a great paper saver for our practice! Thanks! love the poppies especially.
yay! I know it's going to save me time and money and the 15 minute per day challenge is something that I know will grow your artistic skills! Have fun!
Hi Susan 😀 I saw ur notification yesterday so I completed my work early just to learn about mystery surface Nd I was left stunned I really really loved it Also I really love the intro Nice meeting Jackson 😉 Keep posting more 😊 Love from India ❤️
Thanks my friend! I was so excited to know I could use this product. It's definitely going to save me money since I paint so much for lessons :) Have a blessed day brother!
Hmmm...so I can't apply a fixative to this paper without it darkening? So maybe it is better to not use the brown paper if I want to preserve my art? I do appreciate all of your innovative ideas! Keep the creativity flowing : )
Even though the fixative worked in very gentle applications, I still think the brown paper is too prone to curling since it's pretty thin. I'm going to use it mostly for exercises and demonstrations. I probably won't sell pieces on this surface. ;)
You mentioned the video,” how to create a three dimensional scene on a two dimensional surface.” I am looking through all your videos and can’t seem to find it. Could you provide the link? Thank you! Also, I love this idea of painting on non-sanded paper!
Here is a link to the video on how to achieve depth in your artwork. There is also a clickable link at the end of this particular video. Happy Painting! ua-cam.com/video/Xkxn97seaVA/v-deo.html
i LOVE THESE! SO LOVELY! I HAVE HARD TIME ON THE BROWN PAPER. I AM NEW TO PASTELS AND i AM A NEW PATREON. WHERE CAN I FIND YOUR GESSO MIXTURE OR PERHAPS I CAN TRY JUST CLEAR GESSSO? ALSO I AM CONSIDERING PURCHASING PAUL REUBENS SET. IM NOT SURE THEY WILL WORK WELL ON TH E BROWN PAPER? I AM ON A LIMITED BUDGET.
The brown paper isn’t really the best for pastel painting, but I just wanted to test to see if it could be done. You might like the Canson XL sand grain surface that is affordable and it’s what I used in my most recent video. Also, you can use just plain clear gesso to Create a surface that has a bit more texture. I often like to use watercolor paper… Do a quick under painting and watercolor… Let it dry… Then add clear gesso… Let it dry… then pastel. It works great.
In my research this never has any indication that it is acid free. Usually brown acid free paper has blue lines through it to denote it is acid free. Can you double check with the company as to it being acid free?
Orchidlady50 I’m just having to go on the credibility of the representatives who not only shared that with me but also I found questions about it being acid free in a comment section on their product and once again they were informed that it was acid free. I sure hope so! This was the response from the company from a question on their Amazon page about the product being acid free… A: Hi, thank you for your question. General use kraft paper does not get tested or certify ph levels however the paper would be considered “acid-free”. Please let me know if you find out anything to the contrary with this product. I want to make sure my videos are accurate. Thanks so much!

are these chalk pastels or oil pastels ? :)
They are soft pastels (which would be what you refer to as "chalk pastels"). :)
