@@stuffandwhiskey I have had the EC Rye before and I enjoyed it. I was considering the Saz if I could find it. I think will pass after watching your video.
That's fair, John! When we think rye, we think about those earthy and minty notes too. Next week's episode just so happens to be Willett 4 Year vs Pikesville Rye and it goes down a bit differently than this one. It's a fun one!
Baby Saz is hard to find in Colorado, but I have had 1 bottle and liked it. I'm originally from Louisiana and I've been to the Sazerac House in New Orleans and recommend a visit there if you are in NOLA. Haven't had the EC rye, mostly because I'm not a big fan of their bourbon, but I'll probably give it a shot.
The EC rye may actually be a touch better than the bourbon, but it's not wildly different. It's worth a try in our book but go in with tempered expectations if you don't like the bourbon, and if you do get one and remember, let us know what you think. Cheers Matthew!
"I am a rye guy." A man after Erin's own heart (even though Josh is slowly coming around to the rye world as well). Whenever you open the Sazerac we'd love to hear how they compare for you!
We haven't personally noticed much of a difference, but due to the limited availability, it admittedly isn't one we go to very often anymore. We do have several "fresh crack vs. with air" matchups in our head-to-head blind pool. Maybe time to add Sazerac to the mix. Cheers Deven!
Love you both and love this chan but I do feel like you are missing out on smell and taste notes on the Saz, birthday cake and vanilla ice cream is the things I get from the saz.
Can't say we've ever gotten either of those notes on Saz, blind or not, but if we did then we'd almost surely like it more. If you regularly get those and can also regularly get Saz then that's a big win!
Awesome vid as always! My first Ryes that are awesome are barrel picks, Peerless Drunk honey pooh, Knob Creek Ryeneapple Express, also Pikesville & Jack Daniels Single Barrel Rye. Do your research people and of course, have to open up your palate to new flavors to really enjoy Rye. Enjoying the content keep up the great work.
Love watching you guys and tune in for all your reviews. Just one suggestion since you’re newer would would be shorten the time spent with grading each whiskey. A lot of the notes you give then were given in the tasting section. Keep ‘em coming!
Thanks for watching and for the input NDSW! We agree 100%. We've wanted to streamline our delivery since the beginning of the channel, but we're pretty conversational (if not downright "stream of conscious") talkers so it's been tricky. That said, we hope you'll stay tuned because we've finally figured out how to pull it off and we couldn't be more excited! We're recording with our new approach this weekend. Expect shorter episodes that are far easier to follow. The new episodes with the cleaner format will debut September 9th (and we'll be cleaning up the edits of the pre-recorded content between now and then as much as possible). Also be on the lookout for some shaving gear to hit the "Other Stuff" section of our video podcasts too. One of us is pretty nerdy into that hobby as well. Cheers!
@@stuffandwhiskey sweet. Looking forward to it. And no worries. I turn a 10 minute shave into a 25 minute video for the same reasons. You do you boo. ;)
Elijah Craig rye to me was a big disappointment. Nothing unique about it, just like the EJ small batch. If the Sazarac Rye is as bland on the palette as y’all are saying, that’s a pass for me as well. Great content!! Love the channel!
Josh here. That's a very fair point, Ed. Like Erin said, it taste like everything she's ever had before. We don't suspect our phone will be ringing for an Elijah Craig ad spot after this one. 😂 Cheers and thanks for watching!
Have you guys ever given something 2 thumbs up on flavor? Just asking because I’d love to see what you guys think has been the best blind bourbon so far
Good question Johnathan. Erin = much more reserved with two thumbs up, but has given them out in all categories before including flavor. Josh = more prone to giving two things up to certain barrel/high proof offerings. Both have given two thumbs up to products in nose, flavor, experience, retail, and consumer scores before, however nothing has even been able to score a perfect two thumbs up across the board. While there are certainly things we gravitate more toward one our personal time away from the channel, tasting blind the way we do, we've found that most products fall in a pretty average range (the hyped stuff doesn't really stand out as much as you'd think when you're tasting blind and don't know you're supposed to love it because the bottle is in front of you). If there's one whiskey we're in agreement on as being a pretty fantastic pour that fits both of our preferences (read: Josh's love for big proof and flavor combined with Erin's preference for an "easy sipper" that still has great flavor) it's probably Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof.
@@stuffandwhiskey I have not had the EC rye yet. I do like Sazerac Rye for the Sazerac cocktail but that's more for being a traditionalist for that cocktail.
Great video and match up. I'm planning a Rye tasting so I need to add EC rye to the flight. I've tried Saz quite a bit and it's still not my jam so not a bottle I would replace either.
Definitely add EC rye if you can snag one, Kathy. It’s such an easy sipping pour that still has some flavor. We can’t wait til EC rye vs bourbon pops up in a blind head-to-head! Cheers and thanks so much for watching!
@@stuffandwhiskey That will be very interesting to see how it turns out. Just joined your Patreon so looking forward to participating in future things. Have a great rest of the week Cheers
Unfortunately I've never seen Elijah Craig Rye in my area of North Dakota. Even the Sazerac Rye isn't common, but I just purchased a bottle today for $29... hope it's better than anticipated. Thanks for the review.
Let us know what you think about the Sazerac! And hopefully with Elijah Craig's major distribution you'll soon see EC rye in your area as well. It took a year to pop up in our Nashville market. Cheers and thanks for watching!
EC Rye as a bourbon drinkers rye...I've heard the same thing about Old Forester rye. I'm not into rye at this point, but I figured I'd give OF a shot... I'm not really feeling it though. Guess I've gotta keep trying.
Of the two of us, one of us enjoys OF rye a fair bit (Erin) and one of us isn't much of a fan at all (Josh). We both prefer Rittenhouse over OF rye and we'd both say we probably prefer EC rye over OF rye as well.
Amazing how markets differ. I am in OKC, and even every middle-sized store with a decent buyer has Sazerac…and we (to my memory) have never had EC…and you are a stone’s throw from the promised land. OT….Did ya’ll see the Buffalo Trace video posted now two days ago with the PGA golfer “hunting” for bourbon…hilarious…so easy to get the good stuff.
For sure David! The way markets and palates differ is always fascinating to us. Nashville is definitely a big bourbon/hype hunter town given the proximity to Kentucky. We didn't catch the Buffalo Trace video but will definitely have to go watch now. Sounds interesting to say the least! Cheers buddy and thanks so much for watching!
Haha, right!? Once we found out they were ryes, we both knew it would make for a pretty entertaining watch through the tasting portion. We definitely got fooled!
Fair points Jose. We'd both gravitate toward Rittenhouse over Sazerac, but it would be interesting for EC rye and Rittenhouse to go head to head in a blind. We may have to add that to our blind pool. Cheers and thanks for watching man!
I'm contractually obligated to New Orleans to always have a bottle of Sazerac Rye on hand (it's like $18 here). It's not my favorite, but the bottle is cool. I doubt I'll ever buy EC Rye when there are other Heaven Hill options like Rittenhouse or Pikesville. I'm gonna pick up a bottle of OF Rye soon, hopefully it lives up to my expectations. So far Stellum Rye is my favorite rye.
Fair points all around, Bo. We'll have to put EC rye into our blind against Rittenhouse and/or OF rye to be sure but we suspect we're on the same page as you. EC rye is likely a great intro rye for the lower proof fans but for the money it's so hard to beat Rittenhouse in our book.
I friggen LOVE when you publish new videos!!
Well that's good to hear Matt because we friggen love you *and* we love you loving us publishing new videos too!
Love these type of true blind comparisons! Thanks and cheers!
Thanks for the recap!

Maybe the most approachable rye for a bourbon drinker out there. Hope you're able to find some Timm!
