I cried for days after he died. I will never get over him dying- he seemed so full of life and personality, cant believe he went so soon. RIP Andrew Greedy Smith!
would be great to see a commemorative plaque on Oxford st, Paddington just outside of the Unicorn Hotel in honour of the Mentals & their contribution to Sydney life & Australian music culture...what a wonderful service for a uniquely Australian talent in Greedy Smith..best wishes to the families, friends and fans of this lovely bloke
I'm in the media, and in my experience, many funerals and memorial services for public figures are kept strictly under wraps and very private. So, thanks for posting this. I met Greedy in Bondi Beach one day, circa 1984. I think he was living in the area at the time, like me. I cracked a joke which wasn't very funny, but he laughed anyway. Nice guy.
I spoke to him on Twitter in DM. he was a great guy, down to earth, told me how matin plaza was, I told him I had been a life long fan and gotten quite a few American friends to rediscover the Mentals, I thanked him for all the music, art and the memories I had with their music, I am.glad I did and got the chance to say thanks.
Hi Greedy, not seen Martin in public after his illness, has he retired to have a quieter, more relaxed pace of life. I am glad you are still going strong, The Mentals were a huge part of my musical childhood along with Queen, ELO, 10CC. A close friend and shipmate in the Navy often sang Mentals songs during night watches to stay awake, along with Still Call Australia Home, New York New York, etc. Thank you for giving me so many childhood memories, most of my American friends are well aware of your music and enjoy the artistic side, even if not getting the full meaning. If you have the chance, please thank the rest of the Mentals on my behalf. You are quintessential Australian music, fun, not taking things too seriously, showing the fun loving side of Aussies. Thank You.
Hi Will . It’s great to hear from you. You’re always taking the temperature and interpreting the psychosocial weather for us. You really understand tone I think. Thank you. Martin has dodged multiple bullets: kidney lung brain and jaw cancers. He’s still on chemo but only monthly now. He’s down from monthly to three monthly scans. He has a reasonable quality of life. He has a drink and swims when it’s warm. These are two of his favorite things. He says he won’t come out and play with me because every time he has he’s got a new cancer. Ive got some great players who help me recreate the old songs and we record new ones too. It is amazing how many people know our songs and will still come out to see us. Take care x Greedy
Thank you so much for recording this and allowing it to be shared with the general public. As a child of the 80's I grew up on Mental as Anything and absolutely loved their music. I was fortunate to see them play at the Croxton (2010-11 I think). I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to watch them perform live. RIP Andrew Smith. You will be forever missed, but never forgotten.
Awesome tribute to an Absolute legend of Aussie Music , We saw him All the time Live at Selinas coogee bay you name it , We also loved Skiing at the time 80's here in Oz That night the mentals were Playing @the Jindabine Hotel , We where at Perisher that day we get on the quad chair who's beside us greedy we offered him a puff and saw him that Night Never forget the Chat we had that day ! RIP Andrew. I'll NEVER forget Selina's and the best day of my life...when my company hired The Mentals for a Xmas Party in the 90's. You also kind of saved me that day. You know why and I'll see you again one day.
This man had the heart of Australia with him. In Australia, United States and around the world Andrew (Creedy Smith) was the kind of mate that all people wanted. It was a surprise for all of us that grew up with "Mental as Anything". How this young man affected the world of music is beyond measure. Thank you Andrew 💕. May the Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you. Sam Danner. 02-04-2022.
Thank u for streaming. Nearly 7000 views wow.He definitely touched alot of people and was very loved. Gone too early vale greedy. Great guy full of life xx
a bunch of my mates had a chat with him and Jim Keays. It went for 3 hours! We had to go home and he was begging us to stay! and we were in awe of him! now that is the essence of regret.
Having just watched this send-off for Greedy and not really realising how much he was really loved. I only originally knew him and the band for one song from Crocodile Dundee (showing my age now as saw the film in a cinema in Doncaster, UK on its release). Having just lost the lead singer from Roxette as well it just goes to show how much you much appreciate the life you have, its only fleeting. Sometimes it may be a drag but you only get one shot at it. And Greedy did a fine damn job of his.
Greedy was Australia's Lemmy from Motorhead! He stayed true to himself & kept on working until the very end. A huge loss to the Australian music scene!
Andrew greedy Smith made me believe in myself 2 of my friends betrayed me and I didn't no how to lift myself up I was crying for 8 days and nights solid then I remember listening to live it up greedy Smith was the greatest man I ever new and it was so upsetting hearing he passed away
Lovely touch to have him brought into the hall to the tune of "live it up". His finest hour giving those who were there to celebrate his life a lift. From what I know about him I think he would have approved. Out of curiosity was Dave Twohill there? Probably unlikely given the legal wrangling but curious nonetheless.
Martin Plaza in the front row. Reg Mombasa in the second row. John Paul Young and HG Nelson in the third row. Bob King taking the photos, Glenn A. Baker in the crowd.
I cried and cried Thank you Greedy Smith for the incredible joy your brought me with your music the funny witty amazing man you were your music lives onxxx

We've all lost people and it's just so hard to make sense of the finality and starkness of their passing.
What a lively, beautiful, wonderful, special man.

And one on Shark Island, Sydney Harbour where one day I was told "listen young man, you're about to land on Pluto. No more, ok."

I wasn't massively into their music but they were still part of the fabric of life, growing up in 80's in Sydney. Sad news.
