*Update, made a mistake in the tuning, fixing it here, was thinking of Nirvana.
Notice, no guitar solos, no typical song format, bass 5 string, A standard tuning, guitars 7 strings A standard for most songs, and of course, the Nu-ances that are on effect tracks This did cause an issue with radio airplay at first, but the Nu-Metal genre took off. The engineer/Producer Ross Robinson was dubbed Godfather of Nu-Metal and he recorded KoЯn’Ƨ demo, got signed, KoЯn got Limp Bizkit signed, and the rest is us, The Children of the KoЯn"🤘🏻

The song Here To Stay is sick. In fact, there are some wild compositions and amazing songs on Untouchables. The Gothic backup vocals on almost every song make the entire album feel larger than life. It's one of their heaviest, most controversial amongst fans, and is my personal favorite.

The album "Issues" is when I feel like they really find their sound, and still has that edge. "Somebody, someone" is probably the heaviest song, "Falling away from me" is pretty great too.
I grew up in a community with a lot of old school rock purists, where you had to feel deep shame if your foot moved to a Britney song, and i always hated that crap. The great thing about Nu Metal and Alt metal was that all of those metal elitist people HATED it! So I could listen to music i loved AND stick it to some narrow minded people.
I DO NOT think KoRn is "simple" or "bad" music, the way they use chromaticism in their composition was pretty radical at the time, and something you mostly found in contemporary orchestral music at the time. They do amazing things with their low-end, and the drumming is pretty good.
Nu Metal caught a lot of crap for being angsty and emotional, and it is. But we were coming out of an age where male emotion in pop music where limited to "happy/horny", "angry/violent" and "in love/sappy" (with occasional manly sadness). I think it was high time other emotions were explored. Does it get a bit much sometimes? Yeah! Does it hold value for Jonathan to tell about his abuse, that it sucks, and that you can work your way through it? Yeah, i really think it does! Great band!

You may be interested in the covers they did on a few songs from Pink Floyd's The Wall. If you do listen to Daddy, please be aware that it can be disturbing as Jonathan is using his experience from when he was molested as a child as the topic and towards the end he really breaks down which can be difficult to listen to. That melody of the chorus vocals.

      Singring & the Glass Guitar.
What would Doug call 12 Foot Ninja?
Australian band that changes genre mid song. Starts off current metal, then Latin-jazz then Disco, then back to the metal. And they are not taking themselves seriously but their musicianship is top-notch.

All the things you pointed out that weren't typical Metal is why I've always considered them Hard Rock. As far as i know they've always considered the band to be a rock band. Not metal.
But, genres get created, change, etc. I get it. One of my favorite bands and I've never thought of them as Metal.

7 string lead guitar and 5 string bass from Ibanez downtune to the core with funky and groovy drums, thats Korn and they ruled the mid 90s not because they dress well but they brought something new to the table that was inspired from Mr.Bungle, Primus, Duran Duran and ran with it.

oh man, it'd be cool to see Doug react to the music video for Follow the Leader. You don't see a lot of music video reactions in general because its usually just a band in a room. But THAT video is OUTSTANDING.

I would suggest to go with something from Untouchables album. Possibly first single Here To Stay, where Jonathan improved a lot his singing skills. Or maybe something with more unique sound like Alone I break. Or absoulte killer Thoughtless :D

Probably go with Follow the Leader Album, only because of the hype for the album at the time - "Untouchables" probably being the best produced album (from a technical sound point) Personal Favourite is the "Life is Peachy" Album. Guitars are tuned to low A - 7 String for all albums.

Go leftfield and analyse “No One’s There” from the Untouchables album. Not a single, but one of the best Korn songs and album closures for sure. Production, writing and structure are huge

Awesome! Now go from Korn to Kiss. Both starts with an K, both 4 letters 😁 I would love to hear your take on their Music From The Elder CD from 1981. A really special album! Keep up the great work!

I highly recommend you react to Manowar's live performance of Battle Hymn in 2005 in Germany. Eric Adam's vocals are incredible and that performance has 2 guest drummers and 2 guitarists and also a whole orchestra

Love your work Doug, but please just do Deftones already😅 Anything from the White Pony album would do, but I'd recommend any of Digital Bath, Feiticiera, knife party, korea, passenger (with maynard keenan on vocals), pink maggit. You can't go wrong, imo its the high water mark of Nu metal (and 90s/00s heavy music). Dark, heavy and melancholic while also dreamy and melodic. They build layers of harmonies and crunching riffs, with some of the most belting drumming you'll hear from any music genre, but its Chino's vocals that bring it all together. His range is incredible and goes between "straight" singing to screaming, growling even rapping, often deliberately adding dissonance to the chords the band are playing. His vocal cords actually exploded while touring the album back in 2000. SOAD and Tool are the only bands, of the era, that can compete for musicality and originality (my opinion). Honestly its a treat for the ears!

They are the reason I bought an 8 string guitar and I tune it down a full step

It's awesome to see a classical music composer reacting to rock/metal- I like both as well.
Even better that you're not one of those reactors that pauses every 30 seconds to use their musical knowledge to explain what's going on.
Have you heard of a band called Adagio? They're symphonic metal, so it blends orchestral sound with metal. As doing a search for "Adagio" will yield a plethora of non-related videos, so I'm trying to think of a song title... Ok, Next Profundis is a title.
