  • Embellishments notwithstanding, "Legally Blonde" and "Legally Blonde II" remind the viewer of potentially stark contrasts (in e.g., mannerisms, couture, values) among elite white American cultures.
The many comments mentioning Barbie (below) link, in mid-2023, to the enormously successful Barbie movie.

I've always loved the scene where they start introducing themselves. It's so ironic because in other movies, a common cliche is that the rich popular kids, like Elle, are usually the ones belittling people like the others in the group, the "nerds". However in this scene, we see the complete opposite happening. I've always liked that comparison. it kind of just shows that as long as you're in the minority, you're probably going to get picked on.

      It's stupid and offensive.
In theory, I like what you're saying, that anyone can be the victim of mistreatment and bigotry, and so we should show empathy to everyone, but in reality, let's be honest; rich spoiled privileged 'popular' and conventionally good-looking white people, like Elle, aren't ever going to know the type of oppression experienced daily by black people, Muslims, Jews, the disabled, members of the LGBTQ+ community, Latinx, or even simple 'outcasts' or 'nerds'. This film fallaciously implies that blonde rich popular girls suffer the same type of discrimination as other groups. Basically it's a paranoid right-wing delusion, straight from Fox News, that sees the powerful and privileged groups in society as oppressed as those other groups. I like Reese Witherspoon, and with the recent "Little Fires Everywhere", she finally seems to be acknowledging and critiquing her white privilege, but these stupid Legally Blonde films play into that right-wing narrative, and I'm amazed that Reese is apparently making another instalment in this deeply reactionary franchise.

@@GregOrCreg I think you're reading too much into a movie that's main message is that you shouldn't make assumptions about people based on how they decide to look. Race doesn't really come into this film, they discriminate against her because she likes shopping, she's very west coast, and a bimbo stereotype.

    • @bryn1369
      @bryn1369 4 роки тому +509

@@GregOrCreg This movie is in no way whatsoever racist or promoting white privilege, this is a film designed to show young girls and boys of any race or sexuality that they shouldn't have to give up who they are and what they are passionate about to be taken seriously or considered smart. You're completely missing the point. For that matter, the message of this film is far more left wing oriented, though the example of passion and personality demonstrated in this particular film may not have to do with race or sexuality, both of those situation would apply just as easily in this film. Elle is representing a person feeling as though they cannot be themselves as they try to navigate the very cliquey, condescending world around them, if the reason for the discrimination was race or sexuality then the plot line would still work and the message would still be a positive one. Though I agree strongly that she is in no way oppressed in the manner that any of the cultures and communities you named are, the movie is not belittling their suffering it's simply tackling a slightly separate issue.

Honestly? Elle's introduction is amazing. The script writers knew how to sow seeds that Elle is made to be a lawyer with hard work and dedication through that scene:
    1. She was a leader of a group, made decisions and took charge.
    2. She's charismatic and warm, something that puts people at ease.
    3. She mentioned talking someone out of buying a particular item. She presented clear evidence WHY they shouldn't and it convinced them to take her argument into account.
    4. She was well liked enough to be elected for awards/appreciated by her peers (homecoming queen). You have to know how to present yourself and put on appearances so people like you.
Overall? Elle in her SoCal way was hinted at early on to be lawyer material! I love foreshadowing like this.

Her credentials are amazing and she is young.
Only 21/22 since she just finished her undergrad and didn’t take any time off to work in her field.
She is a K-JD….meaning she has just gone to school from kindergarten to law school.
Only about 20% of Harvard Law students do that.
She is organized, dedicated, well-researched, and damn smart.

What I really loved about this movie is that Elle is just as smart, hard working and ambitious as the very best of Harvard. Her top scores, extra curricular activities etc
But more than anything she has moral fibre, questions things and takes things into her own hands. If she has an idea, she does it with confidence. She’s also a natural leader and values the community. It’s absolutely not surprising she got into law
She has the personality of top business people and high achievers. I love how this movie challenges stereotypes of ‘dumb blondes’- Elle is anything but ☺️😊

This kind of behavior reminds of how practically everyone in school told me learning to play the piano and figure skate was easy and nothing like real studying (math, english, science, literature etc). I never said anything about their efforts and time put into their chosen after school activities but I was subtly looked down on for only doing my choices which were mostly arts and sports stuffs, which is considered to be done for "fun." Not saying the piano and figure skating wasn't fun, but I won't say that practicing the piano 2 hours everyday and figure skating for an hour 3~4 times a week consistently for years to be easy.

clearly none of them ever learned to play an instrument. next time someone tells you those things are easy ask them when they learned to play piano or nailed their 1st salchow. i played cello and i rode horses (jumping & dressage) and I loved school/studying stuff. some people have said riding is easy, its not really a sport. i always answer with ok, why don't take this horse and jump that 6 foot fence and complete a canter pirouette then. I can certainly say what you did is harder, how much harder I'm not sure, but definitely harder. playing a piano requires both sides of your brain and both hands for crying out loud. and its harder to play when your fingers are stubby like mine. they were just jealous. plain & simple

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner! Culture can differ within race... It can differ within any setting. Look at Africa. It's not just one culture, there's so many varying cultures from different people's as well as new cultures stemming from the mixing of old or the mixing of old and new. There's two words for a reason, racial diversity and cultural diversity. They mean different things. Sure they may over lap but by no means is it as literal black and white and you put it. Culture covers a lot of things. And if you want an example of white cultural diversity again look at the movie or even *Europe* especially their history.

    She’s accomplished so much.
4.0 gpa with a business degree at an excellent undergrad (it’s supposed to be UCLA).
President of her sorority and a Greek sweetheart…meaning she was voted by the male chapter to be their representative and there are a lot of responsibilities that go with that.
She got a 179 on her LSATs (nearly a perfect score) and has outstanding people skills.
She was built to be a great lawyer.

people have pointed out that the women studies major should’ve been less judgmental of elle since she likely studied gender stereotypes and how it hurts women, but that’s exactly why a lot of gender studies/women studies majors and scholars often times are quick to judge and condescend on girls like elle who seem to adhere to traditional gender norms and appear very feminine. they assume she’s blindly accepting patriarchal ideas of how women should look and behave, since a lot of women’s rights activists and advocates adopted less feminine clothing and style as a form of opposition against being boxed into an idea of the feminine woman. this also stretches beyond just appearances and clothes and also includes roles that women play in society; people in the gender studies/women studies field have a tendency to react negatively towards women who actively choose to stay in the household as a caregiver/homemaker, usually saying they’re wasting potential or submitting to patriarchal expectations of women. given that women were oppressed and expected and groomed to be a certain way for centuries and had limited opportunities other than being a wife and mother until only recently, such concerns are understandable, but it can also be equally constraining of women. men and women alike should be free to be whatever they want to be and do whatever they choose to do, but some people get way too caught up in opposing stereotypes that they think it’s fine to scoff at “traditionally feminine” women. in my experience younger people in the field are less like this, but the professors and older activists are pretty aggressive in stating their contempt of the elles of the world.

The contrast between David's lost and unfathomable face to Elle's overzealousness is what makes this scene for me

I love Selma. She did a great job with this character. It was good to see the turnaround she made when Warner revealed his true self. I think she realized he ‘better dealed’ Elle, and would probably do the same to her, given the chance.

“Elle, Elle I know you are upset about all this, but can’t you just take a Percocet?”
I never understood that line as a child, but damn does it make me laugh now.

    Bachelors degree in fashion merchandising.
    Homecoming queen.
    President of her former sorority.
And got accepted into the most prestigious law school in the country.
That’s one hell of a resume. Why the other people in that group look down on her is beyond me.

My favorite movie! I love it, she was so unbothered. As dumb as ppl treated her, she always showed that she was fully aware of the looks and jokes. She never entertained it, and that's what makes her the best. Nothing she said was dumb.
