People can scoff but in its time the maxi and marina were fantastic cars and gave many miles of happy memories and holidays for many thousands of people. I was one of them.
I worked with an old chap who worked at Longbridge security, he said the body shells stood outside for months unprimed and were red rusty, then carefully lol brought into the factory dip primed and finished to a high degree of finish. All said my ex had a 1.3 coupe as a first car, and I we thought they were an easy drive fairly reliable and very comfortable. Having the A serious engine were reliable and pulled well, moved onto a Mk2 2 door 1.3 Escort which was an entirely different level so so reliable more economical never lost a drop of oil. Don't go there it's current worth in todays market paid £ 2000 in 1985 lol Enjoyed the video. Many thanks.
Say what you will about BL but my husband brought a brand new 1975 Audi saloon, from day one, it broke down it constantly overheated and the final nail in the coffin was the brakes. Failing on the A4 five, whereas my British Leyland built Marina went on and on and on Until I traded up for a beautiful new maestro years later.
Fascinating! The levels of overhyped BS on these promos is truly breathtaking, particular with regard to the Marina which, by BL's own admission, was a cheapo stop-gap until the Allegro became available. Setting themselves up for failure, big-time.
Το Austin Maxi και το Allegro είχαν και 5αρι σασμάν (και στροφόμετρο) και τα νεότερα και μεγαλύτερα Princess και Austain Ambassador είχαν αποκλειστικά 4άρι σασμάν! Τρελό;;;
Our British Leyland 1.3 manual Allegro & V8 auto sd1 rover were the most reliable cars we bought in that era 🇬🇧 my brother's Renault 11 & 25 were complete nightmare compared to the BL cars And there was a lot lot worse European built cars about in that era ... Fiats & lancias were complete unreliable rust buckets in our experience compared to BL cars
