  • Today we're brining you a whole bunch of loose leash walking tips I've compiled after spending time really working hard to get Remy to become a polite walker.
0:52 Our loose leash walking trajectory has NOT been linear
01:44 How (and why) Remy started pulling again
02:40 What a normal walk looks like with Remy today
03:40 Why I let Remy sniff on walks
    05:14 Why I love our 7ft leash
06:09 How often to treat your dog while loose leash walking
07:14 Remy still pulls sometimes (and why it doesn't bother me)
09:17 Is your training helping you accomplish your walking goals?
10:31 Understanding your dog's mental state (and why a prong collar is bad for this)
12:20 Loose leash walking -- it's a lot of work, but worth it!
When I first adopted Remy, he was always pulling HARD on the leash. It made walks really unpleasant for me. So I dedicated a lot of time to loose leash walking -- and I detail that whole process in out "How to Stop a Dog From Pulling: The Secret to Loose Leash Walking" video.
But..I got lazy. And eventually, Remy started pulling once again on walks. The good news is that we were able to make progress back to our ideal polite walking a lot faster since the groundwork had already been put down.
And I talk about some of the techniques and strategies I used to get Remy back to optimal walking, along with how I come to view our walks today.
What I really want to emphasize in this video is that you should do whatever dog training and walks that work for YOU!
There is no objective right or wrong way to walk your dog. Don't feel like you need to have your dog walking right at your leg for the entire walk (although if you want that, that's also OK). Design a system that works for the needs of you and your dog, without worrying about arbitrary benchmarks and unrealistic expectations -- those will just make you and your pup unhappy.

My reactive dog passed back in October. It feels weird being without her, and weirder to have walks with Ko, a dog we adopted about 3 months before she passed. He’s so easygoing about everything. Never met a stranger, and especially not a strange dog. He’ll happily play with a dog that just runs up to him as if he’s known that dog his whole life.
I watched a lot of your videos for a sense of camaraderie and advice when me and Grace were really working hard on improving her reactivity. It’s nice to come back here to remember the hopefulness I felt seeing your successes, and for some tips for Ko. He’s pretty rowdy, although he’s an absolute sweetheart.

It's so strange that you are posting this update - I just literally picked up a few tips from your past videos and put them into devoted practice today. I don't think I was treating her enough for the level my dog is at. My dogs behaviour is very similar to Remy's - they seem to pull and react at the same things. Thanks for this update - renews my hope that I'm not far away from leash pulling free walks. 😊

I understood why you relaxed a little on loose leash, bc you can go back and see what a long ways he came from when you first got him. Good to know that it’s easily for dogs to re-learn loose leash when the foundations are set.
I know these remy update videos can take a while to make but every video has been great. I especially enjoy the 3 yr update on his reactivity video and cried. Thank you for sharing your journey.

Aw thank you so much for the kind words Lynne! Honestly these videos do take me forever, that’s why I post videos so infrequently. It encourages me to know they are helpful for you and that you find value in them 💕

Love this video and all your Remy updates! Your reactivity and loose leash videos really helped me and Patches a lot. Can I ask what brand your 7 foot leash is? Currently using a standard 6 foot leash, but would like the option of having an extra foot or so, to enable Patches to reach the things she would like to sniff :)

Great video, I've become so invested in Remy's progress since watching your Gotcha Day video! Are there any other good dog training YT channels you recommend?

Aw thanks! Kiko Pup is great. Zack George is a bit overly promotional for my tastes but he has some good stuff too!

Thank you for this video. I just adopted a 60 lb. dog who is very reactive on walks. I am looking forward to using your technique. Where can I get a treat bag like I see you using? ❤

I personally love the PetSafe Treat Pouch - that’s the one I’m using in this video: amzn.to/3ISJZrm

    How’s his reactivity?

    • @K9ofMine
      @K9ofMine  3 місяці тому

He was doing a lot better, but we’ve had some setbacks ever since he got bit by a dog a couple of weeks ago. He will likely always be a reactive dog but we’ve gotten to the point where it can be managed very well.

@@K9ofMine same here with my rescue Dachshund. We’ve been at it for 2 years now.

I feel ya. I think people don't love to hear this, but for a lot of reactive dogs, their reactivity is something we as their caretakers will probably have to manage and be cognizant of for their entire lives. Doesn't mean they can't get a LOT better or improve, but it's also important to be realistic and not expect them to magically transform into a different dog.

@@K9ofMine you’re absolutely right. At this point, I’m just managing Gypsy with the skills I’ve learned. My last dachshund rescue was reactive. I worked with a trainer, but he wasn’t cured. I don’t think they’re ever 100% rehabilitated. I don’t believe a trainer or behaviourist that says they can be transformed into your dream dog. The other day, Gypsy was great on our walk, but yesterday, not so. That’s just the way it’s going to be.

@K9ofMine I am so sorry that Remy got bit. My dog also got bit/attacked by another dog 2 months ago. She had 18 wounds. Worst day of my life.
My dog looks a lot like yours but chunkier.
Thank you so much for these videos. ❤

Your thoughts about what "loose leash walking" means to YOU mirrors my own 🫶🏽. I use both a standard leash (8ft) & a retractable leash (16ft) for my puppy.
When I started walking him regularly at 3 months, the main focus on the walks was/is exercise & sniffs. I mainly use the retractable, so he can run ahead or fall behind, go to the sides, etc & he'll have to run back to me & it's PERFECT for tiring him out in a safe way...its kinda like being off-leash, but he's still legally on a leash (leash laws).
Then, we'll do more "proper (aka strict) leash/heel training" w/ the standard leash, in our quiet neighborhood. Now, that he's older (just turned 5 months), Im starting to bring BOTH leashes on our park walks & switch between them. He's doing REALLY well 🐶🙌🏾.
Anyways, I wholeheartedly agree that people need to figure out for themselves what they want out of the trainings &/or walks & do what fits them & their doggo.
I don't want/need a "perfect robotic" dog. I just want more consistent FOCUS** & dont yank my arms out of their sockets 😅.
**Hes a puppy. I'll allow the energetic, over-eagerness. He's giving 60-70% focus most days. I'd like it to be consistently in the 80-90% range by the time he's 7 months & with that give more freedom with a 26ft leash 🐕‍🦺
