This mod really impressed me. As a amatuer modder/critic of DOOM mods in general, i must say the aesthetic design was fantastic, the interwoven corridors and rooms were perfect, and the encounters were beautifully thought out. Easily an 8 or 9 out of 10 - i hate switch hunting, but in general this is an apex DOOM mod.
welp im amatuer doom map maker myself(but honestly i think that most mappers would be amateur in compare to this map(and some others)) and also im not sure in 100% that what i've said earlier is actually true(its just me thinking of how it would be possible).
doom doesnt use proper textures. ceilings and floors use infinitely repeating static square images that can't be unpegged from their grid. it was probably done using scripted light level changes to invisible fan-shaped sectors.
"doom doesnt use proper textures." This is not really DOOM, though. DOOM doesn't have colored lighting, rooms-over-rooms, angled surfaces, see-through floors, horizontal-opening doors, etc. etc. etc. This thing uses a ton of features that didn't exist in the original engine.
"makes me ashamed of the crap i put in doom builder" ...dude, there are FAR WORSE wads than yours (i can imagine what you made) after all, you are just a enthusiast, and this is made by a pro and an amazing review bro!
@@portablerefrigerator4902 Same after watching icarus's doom mode madness and all the amazing reviews of all the map mods, enemy sprites mods, weapon mods, shit even the hud mods and a shit ton of the different pickup mods made me go and say after looking at it all....(woooowww I am full blown garbage and f#$%* this is done and over it)
I had two suggestions: MetaDOOM and Tei Tenga Incident First is a combination of elements from the whole DOOM series (basically more extreme than D4D in concept) and the second is based on DOOM's original concepts like multiple playable characters and the planet of Tei Tenga being the focus of the story. I thought you could do MetaDOOM first and TTI done in a different time because i thought MDOOM was too underrated, it's from the guy who also made Reelism
Love the videos Icarus! definitely the best way to waste time between building test versions of my game! The sliding doors use polyobjs, which are actually pretty simple, from Hexen! really really useful when making maps! (Think the rotating doors from Seven Portals and you're there!) what's really impressive is the scripting that's gone into the *SPOILER* that's impressive work!
I think maybe I’ll try to play this one with a different weapons set, if possible. I think I’ll try to play at West LA Tailer Girl or something. Icarus Lives is my go to for old school FPS mods! You rock!
I reckon that the spinning fan shadows were created using separate sectors and lighting them accordingly using a script. I was under the impression that stuff like that was pretty standard, I guess not.
Keep in mind Mr Icarus isn't that good at strategy (or the game in general, tbh). That being said, I almost never utilize infighting either unless I have to. I used to love watching the monsters fight each other when I was young but now it just feels boring and a waste of time.
I have to credit your channel with getting me to play Doom again after several years. I love this game when it came out in 93, and what a lot of fun I'm having with it right now. Thanks for the videos.
IF you're playing it for the first time (even if not), I'd strongly recommend playing it in complete darkness. It was one hell of an experience for me!
Freaking awesome. Loved Quake. I loved the dark and shadowy environment. Excellent work developing this mod! Once I have home internet again I'm definitely snagging this one
Hi Icarus if you enjoyed this wad you should try out the valhalla wad for doom 2. It has a similar theme to the one you played except it is darker, more atmospheric and foreboding. It's a cool experience. I can recommend it.
Valhalla and Putrefier were made by the same mapper, Ed_C Currently, Valhalla came out first than Putrefier and after those 2, there's Warphouse, his lastest creation.
+Zanieon That's a funny coincedence. Only just recently I played Warphouse. I had no idea they are all the same creator, they are all similar to quak 2's gameplay.
If you listen closely during the opening section of the game a remixed version of Fabio Frizzi's Zombie Flesh Eaters theme can be heard. This was a really solid map, enjoyed the whole atmos and balance. Who is the creator of this? Be curious to try out their other work?
just played it, nice map. I expected it to be longer and I liked the twist in the map, but all in all I did not find it toooo memorable. Other wads have featured a similar experience and I thought the gameplay wasn't that engaging either. Can you do Back To Saturn X 2 now? :3
The "Quake brown" palette was designed for the software renderer of the Quake engine because it has the most interaction with light. It has very little purpose outside of that software renderer.
I didn't skip to that certain part of the video, but I know I'll be thrilled start to finish. Although I do have a question. Can this be played with other mods such as Project Brutality, Trailblazer, Guncaster, and whatnot?
Hey Icarus! Good video. Thank you for the spoiler warning too, I will be sure to play all the WAD before I watch the spoiler part. Also, could you possibly make a video on D4T? I am intrigued to know your thoughts on it. : )
For another Quake style map set you could try out the amazing 4 level Riot Control by Dutch Devil. I think that one earned a caco award. While you are there you can also check out his other caco award winning single map Total Control. I think Dutch Devil makes some really amazing maps.
1:04 isn't that just the floor texture animated and they just turn it by 90° so each corner basically makes up a circle? I'm not experienced with map making or much of anything but it just seems the simplest way.
Just like Unloved, modders want to make sure you can fully implement additional mods onto the map, that's why the monster and weapons rosters are kept original. Unlike Unloved, the mods aren't really necessary to simplify core gameplay, since this seems to have panned out all the balance issues, putting you in situations you know you can overcome easily.
Its another map from Ed Cripps... The best mapper for detailed architecture with 3d effects, floorings, many slopes, etc .... Only one fault : big slow-down on my athlon64 X2 3Ghz..... :/ Doomers, test all other maps from him..!! Like "Valhalla" (ma_val.wad), ect... ; )
These are my favorite Doom mod madness videos. I like seeing super awesome levels more than joke mods or crazy weapon mods I'll never use.
1)Put animated texture of fan on top
2)Put animated shadow texture on bottom
3)???
4)Beauty!
2) create X sectors with different angle of fan
3) create a script which would read sectors info and give dummy sectors tags

The growth in the map, seems reminiscent of Doom 3 to me.
It's maps like these that make me want to play Doom.

his maps arent even bad
Dobre Narcis - Florin his content is genuinely my favourite on UA-cam so glad I stumbled across his channel.

30 years later and there are still Doom mods being made, that beat out some new games made in 2017.....incredible.
Love your work, mate. Doom Mod Madness is the reason I log on to youtube.

Sniff I'm gonna check out both of those, cheers dude ^_^
Sniff metadoom is great, ancient aliens also is
More games need Eldritch flesh-horrors.
Why?
This map just blew my mind. You would have to be a genius to do something like that by yourself.
Appreciate the spoiler alert!

Wait a bloody minute, that music... It's a cover of Lucio Fulci's Zombie, right ?
Holy shit, it is.
Andromedax01 I just downloaded the map and it's got
"New Music: Yes. Made by me in FL studio, cover of zombi 2 theme"
Excellent stuff.
Doom map making is an aesthetic in itself
icarus, where might I find the "crap I've put together" as you call it? I'd love to play through anything that's interesting!
I reckon that the spinning fan shadows were created using separate sectors and lighting them accordingly using a script.
I was under the impression that stuff like that was pretty standard, I guess not.
at around 2:30 i was screaming "utilise infighting, damn it!"
Keep in mind Mr Icarus isn't that good at strategy (or the game in general, tbh). That being said, I almost never utilize infighting either unless I have to. I used to love watching the monsters fight each other when I was young but now it just feels boring and a waste of time.
I could never be as good as you at this.
For those of us who did not skip the spoiler warning:
Anyone else reminded of the end-level sequence in Descent 1 and 2?
Descent used to scare me when i was kid.
I have to credit your channel with getting me to play Doom again after several years. I love this game when it came out in 93, and what a lot of fun I'm having with it right now. Thanks for the videos.

Ed Cripps: Doom Legend.
holy shit this looks fantastic
i wish icarus would separate map reviews from mod reviews in his playlists
Can you please play this mod with Brutal Doom?
Hi Icarus if you enjoyed this wad you should try out the valhalla wad for doom 2. It has a similar theme to the one you played except it is darker, more atmospheric and foreboding. It's a cool experience. I can recommend it.
it does have a similar theme too!
valhalla - i detect a connecting theme here.
+Atlas Horne That might well be. In the review I saw valhalla on a computer screen which reminded me of the wad itself that I played
Valhalla and Putrefier were made by the same mapper, Ed_C

This is basically Doom 3 with the original doom engine
This mod just makes me wonder what would happen if the Strogg got their hands on creatures of hell... *shivers*...
Also, Cyberdemon vs. Macron?
I played this map using the quake enemies mod and then brutality 3, it was glorious :D
We had stuff like that already in Prodoomer. Yes it is really cool but not entirely ground breaking, a great map nonetheless
Have you ever ran into Legacy of Darkness? It is a very good wad, it is often referred as LOS
If you listen closely during the opening section of the game a remixed version of Fabio Frizzi's Zombie Flesh Eaters theme can be heard. This was a really solid map, enjoyed the whole atmos and balance. Who is the creator of this? Be curious to try out their other work?

Cody Noble Yes, just played the map with BD this week. Works nicely.
How about u revisit D4D (Doom 4 Doom)? It get few updates lately like new upgrade system, when now u can upgrade ALL of the weapons?
50 Shades of Brown
Icarus, will the mod MooN(moonman doom) ever be on doom mod madness?
Flamethrower? Fire extinguisher, right?
Have you played Torment and Torture?
Do Back To Saturn X 2. Probably the best polished and most beautiful "normal wad" I ever played.
I think the ceiling fan shadows are fake, just a moving texture.
This seems very Quake 2 inspired.
Hey Icarus, how about to play some BRUTAL WOLFENSTEIN WAD, huh?
