I've always wanted to explore the idea of what Doomguy's life would be like at home, trying to adjust to civilian life. It's interesting to imagine such a ludicrously stoic character be reduced to a broken wreck from isolation and gruesome memories. Maybe something 'stuck with him' and followed him home from hell? Perhaps his brain is scrambled from Berserk Packs and teleport travel...maybe he's actually still in hell...This mod just conjures up a lot of different, neat ideas about this largely simple and unexplored character and that's why I keep coming back to it, trying to interpret what story the author is trying to tell through the level design and themes.
This honestly is how I've treated this wad over the years, and it really makes the wad's ending all the more--disappointing, I guess. Idk, I just wish there was more 'meat' to the story, but hey; maybe it's intentionally more vague.
Grezzo is kind of like that, you explore very normal settings like a highly decorated apartment, a classroom, a church, a gas station etc. The actual game is bonkers, but the locations are very nice, I think it will have that vibe you're looking for. You can pretend that it's a story about doom guy going back to the real world trying to live a normal life, he starts by going to church....lol. myhouse is another possibility, dude scrambled his brain and reality breaks down. There are some other ones I can't remember that kind of fit the theme. What we really need, is a 1408 the movie doom mod, that would be amazing, it's almost exactly like you describe, the room tricks you into thinking you're out, but you're actually trapped forever.
Ah, unloved. Yes, I can relate with your experience, Icarus. It started fine, then became a cavalcade of frustration. That church level with the altar and the horde waiting for you to touch it was the bursting point, but I still powered on all the way to Tammuz, and it got a little bit better, if only because Tammuz is just one enemy rather than an unmanageable horde.
That church part was really the only frustrating point I found. Just like me the author likes fights agaisnt big ass hordes of enemies, remember that Doom is a game with completely free save system, the maps are carefully designed so there's strategies to manage any situation, even if you dont feel like being completely strategic and likes to go balls to the wall(like me) there's little tricks to get out of those situations after a few tries.
That church part was the absolute boiling point for me. Especially when four arch-viles show up in cages that have a full view of the entire room and leaves the player without a single bit of cover from their flame pillars. It's one of those mods that incredibly well-made with so much love put into it but the modder shat the bed in terms of actual design. I still like the mod a lot but jeez, it's too much sometimes.
there's somethings that are problematic with that. in other words, yes the game has a free save system, but the game shouldnt focus on that. it is there to help players, nto to be the solution to the problem.
Marcos Danilo There's no zone in Unloved that can't be overcome with a strategy, the last chapters are that extremely hard because if not would feel like a pushover, like happens in many Doom campaings. The church part is very bullshitty, but even being the worst part of the whole mod doesn't take an unreasonable amount time to overcome the first time, the next time you play the mod won't give you much problem. If you are asking for a game that does't require a good amount of Trial and Error on it's most difficult part then you want a a game that Holds you by the hand.
I have a love hate relationship with that chapel section. On one hand, it was hard as hell and I had to plink the arch wizard to death with the shotgun because I ran out of other ammo. But it was also a badass fight that took all of my skill so I've got to give it that for being exhilarating.
Perfectly said. This map started off as probably one of the best horror themed mods of any game I've ever played or seen. Then the game started throwing hordes upon hordes of enemies at you time and time again, completely ruining the overall scare/creepy factor. I understand this is Doom, shooting demons is what Doom does best, but i feel like a horror mod should stick with what it does best. Having a creepy atmosphere that doesn't get ruined by forcing big fights so much.
Apparently this mod was really good, because they are creating a Full Release version of it on Steam using Unreal Engine 4. Excited to check out this game in Unreal Engine!
I don't remember ANYTHING about this mod except that the main house/hub area was super atmospheric and awesome, and that as with most user-made mods, the final boss was unbeatable without cheats.
I gave this wad 2 go's. The first time I was really amazed, played for like 2 hours until I reached the 3rd realm, the dark corridors or whatever it's called. The darkness, the narrow hallways filled with hard-to-see enemies really annoyed me the first time. I died over and over because I kept running into enemies that I thought were already dead or similiar stuff. But to be fair, I also had a pretty bad save, entering the level with barely any health and armor. After some tries I decided to take a break, the break ended up lasting like 2 months. On my 2nd go I decided to start from new. With a far better savepoint in the 3rd realm, I made it through the hallways pretty easily (just to clarify, I'm only using the autosaves, I didn't quicksave at any point). I actually really enjoyed the following sections, until I reached the long hallway filled with corpses and one of the keys. I knew something was gonna come after picking up the key, but I didn't expect Archviles in a room without any cover at all... that was the first part I found a little bullshit. The only thing to get you through this room is luck (and a bunch of rockets). Luckily I only died once tho. The next problematic room was the cellar-like section that comes late in the 1st realm (which is shown at 6:43 in the video). The one which has a few frozen enemies (like Archviles) that come to life after activating a switch. The rooms here are TINY and you have to fight a small horde of monsters, including Archviles. If you're unlucky and they stay around the corners, this fight can be really unfair. And immediately after this fight you get SWARMED by chainsaw zombies. This is impossible if you don't climb onto a box or table or something. And yet, that's not even the end. right after that fight the game introduces a new enemy that's probably gonna demolish you. It's some kind of super wizard. While these don't have much health, their attacks can be deadly and they move super fast through the air. All of these fights are ones that will most likely kill you on your 1st time, when you don't know what's gonna come. Then there's the entire castle / church section. Even tho the mod has already had slaughter-ish battles before, this is where shit hits the fan. It's actually quite managable until you enter the big cathedral room where you'll get surrounded by Mancubi, Pain Elementals, Wizards, Revenants... (shown at 7:57) I died a lot at that fight and to make things worse, a Cyberdemon and a Heresiarch will join later on. It's a weird room to navigate around, your best bet is to kill everything else first before summoning the bosses. The final boss and the ending were a little lackluster, on the contrary. The final boss was way easier than several of the battles beforehand. I expected the ending to be a little more... I dunno. It just felt like something was missing. I honestly thought I got a bad ending at first and there might be a better one, but nope. Still, I liked the wad a LOT. The few gripes I have with it don't actually pull the game down that much for me.
Excellent review. I felt the same way about the spike in difficulty but I'm new to Doom, so wasn't sure if this was normal. Hearing that you feel the same way encourages me to check out more mods.
@@roadroller8851 I haven't played GD yet, but I will certainly look forward to it. Or live in fear of it. In seriousness, though, as much as Mr. Icarus seems to enjoy Equinox, filling a level entirely with archviles isn't fun. Neither was much of Equinox, though, with a few bright spots in a desert of ammo.
I recall seeing a comment on another video that went something like "how to count revenants: one, two, three, four. How to count archviles: one, too many"
I feel exactly the same about this wad except 1 part: I think the final are, when you get all the keys back, is actually pretty good. Like, on the 2/3rds mark you start getting this awful unfairly hard slog of huge arenas that bring down the wad but, once I got to that final section, the balance and pacing were actually fixed? It is a huge shame that the wad had all those awful areas because damn the final section is actually really well done. You don't need to rush and crawl into a hole while hoping for the best before you can do a mad rush towards the next switch, before more enemies start appearing. The areas are well differentiated, monster variety having a good reason to be there, not putting too many variations on each area, and you can focus on clearing an area before moving to the next, making enemy amounts and difficulties way more manageable. I saw in the gameplay you posted here of that are that you were still running like crazy towards the next switch while activating more and more enemies in each room and yeah doing it that way freaking sucks, but is understandable since the previous parts of the wad taught you to do that. But if you play that section with the mentality of the first 2/3rds, it's actually well done.
So I just finished this mod and I got to admit, you are totally correct. Its great up until the last little bit, such as the Heretic Golems being frozen in Childhood Memories, where you are pretty well forced to take damage. I played it on Ultra Violence. The big one for me, though, was the horde right before the caco cage maze. They ate all 20ish of my rockets, then I had nothing left for the rest of it and the Archviles ate the rest of my plasma cells. Got to that part where the walls come down and there's just that huge wave of enemies after the 2 Viles and it just got stupid. BTW, on Ultra Violence, in the church area is something like 16Viles, including 2 against the Cyber and another 2 with the "secret" boss and then 8(?) in cages.
This is certainly a fantastic mod, but play it on an easy difficulty. I beat it on ultra-violent and there were just some parts that were such huge pains in the ass. Really the huge hordes that start to show up also ruin the atmosphere of the mod too, plus there is barely enough ammo for ultra-violent.
@@Duxaization I beat it on UV, and it really fucked up the experience. Its got such great atmosphere that is just ruined by the huge hordes and tricky enemy placement.
@@Worgen33 I see your point. Unfortunately that is kind of DOOM's biggest drawback, unless you build better quality enemies, it is very hard not to use swarms to simply increase the difficulty.
@@Duxaization That's the thing though, this mod doesn't really need increased difficulty. Its got a fantastic horror atmosphere. Really just putting tougher enemies in small spaces works well, without making them huge hordes, or just limit the weapons a bit more to keep the player having to be careful of what they use. Hordes are a crutch and lazy design. Really they only work well in something made better for them or something with more powerful weapons.
Thanks man I love these creepy mods. Would like to see some more mods with extended bestiaries if that's possible. Keep up the good work man, you give me a lot of awesome mods to check out!
Man, I am so happy you covered this mod. I've been requesting it in the comments for some time now, and thought you would like it. I have been going at mods for years and this has to be one of my all time favorites. I didn't catch the RE 4 reference since I never got to play that game sadly, but the hub house gave me a kinda Amnesia vibe, or some Poe, Usher house and all that madness. Anyway, completely agree with what you had to say, I was so annoyed by the huge monster numbers at the end section compared to the very atmospheric baddie distribution before that I didn't play it through the first time around. But then I went at it again and now it's done. Thanks for doing this review, man, been a fan for more than a year now, and will continue to be, love your videos. All the best.
YAMI Great to see others appreciating this mod as well. Have you seen the updated version on Steam? So far I don't like it as much as this, seems a lot more linear and a lot more simplified.
I have watched jim sterling play it, I usually get thrown off by randomly generated content, so that was a huge dealbreaker for me, I also think it misses a lot of the atmosphere that the mod brought out so well.
Actually, all of those monsters are custom monsters. Some of them had sprites based off of monsters from Heretic/Hexen and others borrowed sounds from enemies in Blood... but none of them were directly taken from any game.
Love these reviews; inspired me to rip through Final Doom for the first time in ten years. Puts modern shooters to shame. Thanks so much for your hard work.
Nice review Icarus. This WAD/Mod is awesome! , If you haven't tried and ever want to try the Combine arms weapon mod and the Brutal doom monsters only mod with this, it works great, the only thing weird is the kick with the melee punch, looks funny, just this spinning leg on screen pops up, its kinda humorous really, but if you don't use the secondary of that 1 thing the weapons work fine, the chainsaw is replaced with that awesome axe, but the chainsaw enemy's still have chainsaws and look right. and the bdmonstersonly adds great gore to most enemy's and the body's and stuff in the environment , doesn't seem to break anything. Played through the whole thing last night. Those 2 things really seem to enhance the experience. Just thought id let you know. Cheers!
I always thought unloved started kinda easy and turned out in the end to be more of a "Hell Revealed" difficulty, i dont think thats hard, actually, i think if a mod or wad wants to be hard like that in the end, it should start already being hard. Maybe this way, when the casual player start playing it he will know that the mod is more of a frustration for him, he shouldnt know that in the end. Btw the mod shouldnt ramp up the dificulty like easy at the start and super hard at the end, this is not a 32 megawad. And nice review Icarus!
As someone who likes Brutal Doom but doesn’t try to load it with every damn wad under the sun... it actually enhances the experience, at least a little.
I played through this on release... 10 years ago, coupled with a Doom3 mod. Replaced default weapon and monsters. I had played through Silent Hill 1 - 4 previously and I loved .... Unloved. Given the horror vibe of this mod another good combination might be "fears weapons & monsters.pk3" + "unloved.pk3", that could be really spooky. Because of the flashlight mechanics of "fears". Apparently Unloved is one of the custom map packs supported by Aetherius, though I forgotten how to work it... let me get back to you on that... :-)
SH2 detracted a little from the cult aspect of the series, but the 1st and 3rd played this well to their advantage. James and his wife in SH2 called Silent Hill their home away from home, she really wanted to stay in the town since she loved it so much, although the multiple endings do bring speculation on whether she got her wish, and was revived so they could stay in the town. James' demeanor made him seem like he's fated to be part of that town, even his name seems appropriate. All Harry and Heather wanted was to get out of that town alive, with whatever they sought out to do accomplished.
While this mod is awesome there was always one bit that I got stuck on and that bit is when you had up into the basement in the hub area to get a key inside a tiny prison area. I was never able to figure out how to trigger that event/ get the key.
Also because of said difficulty of the horde encounters I recommend some sort of weapon mod to go with this. Those screaming enemies are from serious sam basically the headless kamikaze's Have you ever looked ad any mods related to strife?
I think it's worth noting that the game is no longer early access as of yesterday, as I found out upon looking it up on Steam. On a side note, based on what you've said about the atmosphere, it seems like this mod would have benefited from the more atmospheric sound effects present in psx Doom or Doom 64.
Now that you reviewed this mod Icarus, have you played the Unloved 2 beta? Or anyone played it?. I did it long ago but sadly the creator never finish it.
soundtrack for first dimension you visited if you couldn't figure out from chainsaw maniacs and soundtrack sounding like someone revving chainsaw that it's from texas chainsaw massacre the beginning than i'll be damned....
This wad is one that definitely left a bad taste in my mouth if for nothing more than the chapel onward. While I did somewhat enjoy the challenge of the chapel because at that point in the wad I had a decent amount of ammo for all of my guns and was able to work my way through it, having horde after horde interspersed with unfair and outright cruel level design and enemy placement, my enthusiasm was absolutely cratered and any tension the wad had built up before hand was replaced with a tired dread of when the next 100+ monster mash would happen, there was even a point where, just to get to the next area, I toggled Godmode briefly to get my health back to 100% just so I could survive an undead mancubus ambush. There's a point after the big boss fight- with what I can describe as a BFG Cyberdemon that's pretty fucking awesome- where the wad just drags on too long and leads to a very disappointing ending. (I don't care about spoiling it, you get killed.) If you play this wad, after the boss fight, just close out and pretend you died from the wounds from the fight. It's less of a slap to the face.
What do you think about horror games in general? Do you like the kind that give you weapons and very scarce ammo? Or the kind that don't give you weapons at all, and makes you defenseless prey?
I'd be tempted to try this out, but e can't see anything other than the reflection of my own face in the screen. Its like you're trying to play an OLED theme: there's so little actually lit up that you can't focus on the surface of the screen, you can only focus on the reflected image behind the surface. So yeah, I don't think I'll be playing Stevie Wonder's haunted house any time soon.
One thing I was actually hoping was that this mod would be compatible with different weapon mods. Unfortunately after attempting to get Brutal Doom Black Edition or even the Psychic mod to work, both seem to have issues specifically with the weapons. It's odd because I've played through Unloved some months ago and there are no additional weapons in this mod, they are all the stock weaponry. When I attempted BD Black Edition, The starting pistol was buggy and the character was constantly breathing heavily. With Psychic, The pistol seemed to overwrite the starting handguns. And even spawning either in the weapons would disappear. Also using either mod with Unloved negates the choose class screen. Only posting this on the off chance someone would be interested in making a compatibility patch for either. Both mods I think could fit the mood of unloved and might even balance the gameplay better in the player character's favor. It's a great concept with some great level design, if only marred by the heavy monster spawns near the end of it.
I remember hipp0cat playing this mod (Sadly, deleted his channels :\). He went crazy near to the end lol It's a masterpiece but it is indeed a crazy AF wad.

Thanks man I love these creepy mods. Would like to see some more mods with extended bestiaries if that's possible. Keep up the good work man, you give me a lot of awesome mods to check out!
The music is sourced from many sources, Silent Hill being one of them, but one song is by Aphex Twin, which actually fits really well.
About the soundtrack, it contains the song Aphex Twin "Jynweithek Ylow" of Drukqs.
So i think the soundtrack is made up of various songs.
All the best.
oh, seems like I wasnt the only one then :P
YAMI Great to see others appreciating this mod as well. Have you seen the updated version on Steam? So far I don't like it as much as this, seems a lot more linear and a lot more simplified.
I have watched jim sterling play it, I usually get thrown off by randomly generated content, so that was a huge dealbreaker for me, I also think it misses a lot of the atmosphere that the mod brought out so well.
Couldn't agree more. Although I haven't played it, but lack of direction for "random" stuff and loss of atmosphere ruined a whole lot of games, sadly.
Lotta Quake textures.
Actually, all of those monsters are custom monsters. Some of them had sprites based off of monsters from Heretic/Hexen and others borrowed sounds from enemies in Blood... but none of them were directly taken from any game.
what about the normal imps, pinky demons, mancubus and cacodemons.
Sure. I guess I just imagined all those Hell Knights, Mancos, Cacos, Impses, Revenants, Pain Elementals, Lost Souls, etc.
Love these reviews; inspired me to rip through Final Doom for the first time in ten years. Puts modern shooters to shame. Thanks so much for your hard work.
Dude, Doom console supports going through history of commands by pressing up and down. You don't need to retype "resurrect" each time.
Yesssss, SPOOPY MODS. Just in time for Halloween, I knew you wouldn't let me down.
Wow, finally reviewing one of my favorite mods for Doom~
Cheers!
One of my favourite WADs. It's amazing.
7:55 Had a good laugh at how ridiculous that was
Yeah. This mod should be played with russian overkill lmao
The first room of the second realm...
Reminds me of My brain: red, pretty empty and have some demonic possesion becuse DOOM..
You can't rustle my jimmies, i'v got a belt.
It's the slaughterfest elements which stopped me from bothering to play this completely through.
Is this about Doomguy's PTSD?
He doesn't suffer from PTSD
He makes everyone suffer from PTSD
More like he's such a force of nature that his badassness causes the very fabric of reality around him to suffer from PTSD.
Enclave Reclusiarch ahah best coment ever
Ah, the Happy Rainbow Place. Food alone is worth the trip, I hear.
Now *this* is a horror setting. Combined with classic Doom gameplay I think this could be a very enjoyable experience.
Unloved is basically a Hexen hub crossed with a slaughter map.
Where those serious sam-style kamikaze shotgun guys at the end?
Former human suicide bombers. From Realm667.
As someone who likes Brutal Doom but doesn’t try to load it with every damn wad under the sun... it actually enhances the experience, at least a little.
6 archviles? geez reminds me of that level of Doom Wad where you were in a room surrounded by like 20 of them. Freaggin nuts.
is that speed of doom by any chance
Unloved is like one of the hardest Doom mods I've have seen. Also, will you be reviewing the Legacy of Suffering someday?
this rustles my jimmies in all the right ways...
It's appropriately named because it definitely does not love you one bit.
Good doom mods are there these days. :D
Just playing this in Zandronum with Brutal Doom is a fucking nightmare. No lights, and brutal monsters... much scarier that way.
awesome doom mod.. it also remembers me at silent hill... at least the fluffy and nice part of silent hill 😂
This actually got made into a stand alone game available on steam.
After two yeears .... I just manage... YES there is also quake monsters ... Love it
This is surprisingly fun to play with the Aeons of Death mod!
What song did you use at the end? it sounds really good!
Its called "Theme of Laura" from Silent Hill 2
Sounds like something from Silent Hill series.
ICARUSLIV3S Thanks a lot! Btw here have a mod suggestion: Hotline UAC
***** I consider SH1 better than 2, still both are a 10 out 10.
You unlock it by completing the red and yellow skull key rooms.
I really like that helmetless Doomguy player sprite
The track at around 2:30 is from the new doom isn't it?
Nope, the mod was released in 2010. I checked it and there is no music from the new Doom.
My Jimmies remain unrustled.
Brutal Doom made this wad too easy, but it also crashed my device multiple times.
There are no monsters here, hey whait look over there... 🎵🎵🎵
Did I hear Aphex Twin at the end?
yeah, jynweythek ylow
I recommend playing unloved with HDoom
h0t
Loved*
Is that freddy kruger's hat an sweater at the beginning?
Absolutely agree with the clusterfuck fights in this mod. Only thing that keeps me from putting it on a top ten list.
Can you review blanket doom?
I think the unfair fights in this mod add to the oppressive nature of the mod. No, it's not exactly fun, but I can't imagine the mod any other way.
(I don't care about spoiling it, you get killed.)
If you play this wad, after the boss fight, just close out and pretend you died from the wounds from the fight. It's less of a slap to the face.
they had quake enemies.
that sure is...
something.
Check out WGrealms 2 - Siege Breaker
this mod is terrifying on QuestZDoom
Looks good
Mix it with guncaster?
What do you think about horror games in general?
Do you like the kind that give you weapons and very scarce ammo? Or the kind that don't give you weapons at all, and makes you defenseless prey?
Why are there ROTT monks in this??? xD
I will probably test this mod with the Doom 64 enemies. :)
I'm so going to play this with DoomRL Arsenal
I've played UNLOVED on steam. It was really good.
It seems like a good portion of the textures are from Quake.
Reminds me of "Realms of the Haunting"
I know this is an old video but I want to say the music is from trent reznor's quake 1 music or at least the first level's music?
You should do valiant it's pretty cool
Can you play the unreal engine remake one?
I didn't know they made a mod about me (;-;)
oltro song name?
seen this mod
This is an rpg maker horror game in doom.
Why did this mod have to be named after me?
loved
I remember hipp0cat playing this mod (Sadly, deleted his channels :\). He went crazy near to the end lol It's a masterpiece but it is indeed a crazy AF wad.
reminds me of ep2 levels of Blood
You must do MoonMan m8! xD
I didn't actually have any problems with the enemy spam. It was fine and beatable.
