Love my HD 598's, had em years. I search music all day an night an never need to take them off such is the comfort. I used an amp to crank up the bass an it sounds amazing. Handles heavy base comfortably, fantastic headphones, had em so long i'm getting the ear sponges redone, they won't let me leave them... still hard to beat for me

Absolutely even though I’ve moved on to higher end headphones the sound staging on these are so good that to me they remain the king of gaming headphones.

Sound is what it is, but I simply love the design and colour-scheme of the HD598.
I think the best thing about these is I forget I'm wearing them. Just shockingly comfortable and they've held up well for years. Only necessity is an after market cable in my opinion. The plastic around the OEM connector is huge and just weighs too much.
I think a lot of people don't really understand the HD599s. Like the build and overall comfort, I think the sound signature can similarly be described as "comfortable". While you might think other headphones provide more details in the bottom and very top, when you listen to all those headphones for more than 30 minutes, they begin to make you uncomfortable with sibilance and boominess in your head for almost all material that isn't say classical or not voice forward. You might think the HD599 is too dampened on the high end, but when you watch a 3 hour movie, they are truly perfect for, well, just listening and enjoying the material without being too harsh. At the same time, they are the most comfortable headphones around.
Yeah I do think the signature is more comfortable for sure. Well these are the 598, i heard the 599s they do sound better for sure, I think now a days the hd 560s/hd400 pro is basically there new an improved 599
A lot comes down to value for money - and since they go for around $50 used, I feel they still are a great buy, provided you don't buy them overpriced, of course.
I like that you asked the question, but i disagree with a lot of your answer.
I find them to sound quite wide compared to the 600 series. The treble is there but distant.
I agree with you about the lack of bass tho, and the comfort No one could argue there. They are great headphones to fall asleep in.

Review for 598HD
Everyone says that we need to do mod for ( having more bass to change the sound quality ). I would say if you don't like the sound signature of the Sennheiser headphones. And you are keeping it in a shelf for a really long time OR ready to throw it away now itslef after realizing it's not that really worth for that much of hype they have given through reviews, comments., Etc. Give it a last chance to try after remove all the white coloured papers on the outer diaphragm. Which means usually to damp the sound they will use the white coloured paper above the transducer or driver except the cone area. So what we have to do is. We have to remove the white coloured paper which is pasted over the diaphragm. Once you did on the both side(left and right ) of the headphone. Those who complaint there is lack of bass. They will come to know to enjoy the music we no need to have that much of bass. where usually all the other headphones have.( take note , am also enjoy the amount of bass which is produced by JBL speakers/subs, which usually can achieve 34hz frequency range ). And you can see how there is an increase in spatial cue's / It produce a bit of more environmental sound, means you can feel the atmosphere changing when the actors moving from one room to another room ( though don't expect too much as surround sound effects ). Though sound is subjective, I think you can try it before give it up. Last but not least it will change the sound signature to somewhat enjoyable. I get to try this option, because I saw a UA-cam video where they go through the industrial visit of Sennheiser company in Germany. There they are actually testing the dynamic capability of all there transducer to produce the required frequency / sound signature "with the entire driver, not just with the cone exposed". Amazing headphones, had em years. Used an amp with them, heavy base sounds amazing an high trebles comfortably with ease. They've just Alphed everything i've thrown at them. 12hours on comfort, rrrrrrjus love em.
