@Adam LB I think you have to remember that she'd worked her whole life to be there and she may never get the opportunity to race in the Olympics again. I don't think she could live with herself if she dropped out of the race, I know I would hate myself and that pain would cut deeper than anything else
Nope, D'Agostino finished the 5k at 17 minutes with a TORN ACL and Meniscus. I would've flopped like soccer players and called it a day. Other than Tiger Woods, I haven't seen anybody power through using will power alone.
I didn't dislike the video, but the constant fades to sappy messages really annoyed me. The athletes' conduct speaks for itself without these trite, stupid interruptions.
This was a video focusing on D'agostino. It was put together with that in mind. If one doesn't want "interruptions" than the original coverage of that heat is the thing to watch.
Pls THANK her for us. What she showed was worth MORE than a Gold Medal. Sportsmanship, Determination (powering through pain and injury) and true mateship! Abbey Dagostino, you made this 58 yo war veteran cry. Bless you.
They are both Olympic Champions for they displayed what it means to be an Olympian . A medal for a race is cool but a medal for humanity is in a category all it's own
So beautiful. So sad 😞. What made me cry was Diagistino didn’t know this lady who is from New Zealand trips over her doesn’t even care about herself and makes sure The girl from New Zealand is okay. Then Diagistino starts struggling and the lady from New Zealand still stays back to make sure Diagistino is okay to power through.
I think the man with the voice over missed it. Abbey doesn't need to look back on it. I think that she realized, at the time, what she had accomplished. And that she is proud of herself. Just look at her face.
You can say what you want about future injury. I'm a coach who encourages kids to stop or not run if they are injured. However, sometimes the will to finish overcomes all other feelings. Over years of watching D' Agostino run and be interviewed, she impresses me very much. Her determination and motivation are awesome, and her personality is so positive. She is truly nice to everyone and she is a role model for track and field.
It is good to see that people still understand part of what makes an athlete great. My other favorite moment was when Simone Biles beckoned for Aly to join her and share the moment. Class acts!
My wife doesn't share my love of sport, but it's moments like this that move me. Derek Redmond, Keiran Perkins, the Steve Bradbury moments. Every Olympic Games brings up moments like these, not just the expected champions who deserve gold, but the unexpected winners, those who don't place but remain in our memories long after we forget who won gold. I love sport :-)
This is nice video. It’s true; it’s not only about winning, beating your rival and it is not about giving up but it is about how to finish the race you are started.
A Truly Beautiful Moment. Isn't this what the Olympic Games are all about. Sometimes, it isn't about the Medals, but moments like these, where Humanity plays a very important role.
It's so sad :( I'm crying right now I just love the Olympics so much, This video shows you how good people can be no matter if they are you enemy or friend or if it's a competition or not we are all humans and we need to be treated right no matter what
there are good people in the world and those are the people that take the time to care for others so thank you for those people because you helped all of our lives
What a message in the Olympics!.. Nikki and Abbey scripted history writing in golden letters "EMPATHY IS SOMETHING MORE VALUABLE THAN OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL"
We should keep on watching this type of videos over and over again when ever we feel little disappointed in life!! There's no derth of good human being in this beautiful world of us!!
It was the least she could do, seeing as her falling took the American out of the race. AND notice it was the Amercan who first checked on the well being of the Kiwi.
Sometimes..... it's about not giving up. Really? Is it ever about giving up? In the Olympics? Sometimes...... it's about making it to the finish. Isn't it always about making it to the finish? In the Olympics? This was a great olympic moment. Don't ruin it with stupid slogans.
My favourite was "Sometimes... it's not always about winning" Does that mean there are cases where it is indeed ALWAYS about winning? Because that makes zero sense, if it's *sometimes always* about winning and sometimes not
Beautiful story! A similar situation just happened in the 2019 World Track and Field Championships with Braima Dabo and Jonathan Busby. In addition, Gabriela Andersen-Schiess had her moment at the 1984 Summer Olympics. And of course, Derek Redmond and his father had their moment at the 1992 Summer Olympics.
If this doesn't give you the "Feels" .... then I don't think Track n' Field is for you. It seems every Olympic games , both summer and winter, will showcase the True spirit of competition and fair play. This was 2016's proud moment. Watching all these different examples of great sportsmanship, makes me miss seeing the Olympics of 2020....😒 Let's hope the games can happen this coming summer , and give more examples of incredible sportsmanship. I think the World needs the Summer Olympics this year, just to remind us all of the Good we can offer one another, instead of the need to knock each other down. And the Olympics is the perfect time and place to exercise this love and respect. Let's go ....👍👍
Very beautiful and true sportsmanship!! It's so very true. It's not always about being the winner, but helping others and making it to the end no mater how hard no matter how hard it is!!
Well, it was all fortunate that both were given places in the final. Realizing they’ve lost the race and choosing to help out one another is sportsmanship.
Courageous filled with admiration from both athletes very proud that one was from New Zealand ..... always there for when one is down and always there to lend a helping hand.....so proud to be a kiwi god defend New Zealand
That is passion loving something so much you keep going even when you hurt because when your that passionate about something in the moment you don’t feel the pain you’re not nervous your not scared or anxious your just doing what you love
so happy for both athletes to be awarded the Pierre de Coubertin Award.... the true olympic spirit right there.
That is true sportsmanship on behalf of the athletes and the organizers

I don't think she could live with herself if she dropped out of the race, I know I would hate myself and that pain would cut deeper than anything else
The pain is one thing, but D'Agostino tore her ACL and meniscus as she fell. She literally ran on sheer willpower rather than her legs.
andrew7taylor that’s crazy
cheers for that
Wow, I saw that but i didn't know or realize that she was hurt that bad. I thought that was an ankle incident.
If you look closely she literally runs on her legs
She tore her Acl and meniscus and her first response was to help a girl who was trying to beat her for a medal. Let that sink in
Okay soooooooo… in a 5k she still finished at 17 minutes with a hurt ankle… that’s really impressive
Nope, D'Agostino finished the 5k at 17 minutes with a TORN ACL and Meniscus. I would've flopped like soccer players and called it a day. Other than Tiger Woods, I haven't seen anybody power through using will power alone.

This is a typical example of what makes Olympic truly special events.

He says the Olympics is just about winning gold and any other place you are a loser

Abbey is my cousin and an amazing human being, thank you for this. I still come back and watch it from time to time
Beautiful, it transcends all competition.
Pls THANK her for us. What she showed was worth MORE than a Gold Medal. Sportsmanship, Determination (powering through pain and injury) and true mateship! Abbey Dagostino, you made this 58 yo war veteran cry. Bless you.
And Nikki Hamblin's partner was my Year 5 teacher! What a strange connection haha.
she tore her acl and finished the race, now that's dedication!
She looked like she bent her leg outwards in the slomo replay. That's gotta be pretty painful
It's also gotta be a pretty bad idea, right? You're making it so much worse by running on it, and risking your career.
Yeah the fact that she continued to run on that knee is going to cost her entire career.
Kinda dumb... Heroic, but dumb.
I had a torn ACL and meniscus for 2 years until I finally told a doctor about it and had acl reconstruction
They are both Olympic Champions for they displayed what it means to be an Olympian . A medal for a race is cool but a medal for humanity is in a category all it's own
Where are their medals? Were they handing out participation trophies?
@Molly McConnell They were in a competitive race, each intending to win. Did they not also have pride?

Nikki Hamblin showed what the soul of a olympian was, what a heartening moment.

she's the reason the american girl fell though lol. helping her was the least she could do
