The first story was so beautiful, with the added bonus of him naming his baby after the gold medalist.

delayed his medal ceremony? it means they could've hung the medal on his neck while participants were still out there racing? that's mean, you Olympic Committee people :(

I don't think it was the committee. i think it was daehlie himself. he probably didn't want to go to it until everyone finished or something. which is an honorable thing to do.

He waited for Boit because they'd become good friends and he thought he deserved encouragement crossing the line. They give try do things that early because there's 100s to give out and some races take a long time, there was 20 minutes between 1st and last place in this race and there's literally no chance the last persons gonna win, it's not mean, it's not like they thought they still had a chance. It also won't have been the main ceremony, the 1st bit is when they receive a token and acknowledge their win, the ceremony is later.

@@dummymummy5 It's the other way around. The organizers wanted to have the medal ceremony right after the finish, for TV production reasons. If they didn't they'd have to cut to something else, then come back 20 minutes later which they didn't want. The Norwegian team had heard about a competitor from Kenya and talked about it as it's pretty unusual with African cross country skiers. Then the weather changed right before the 10k and rain made the snow heavy and conditions difficult so everyone was interested to see if the Kenyan could finish at all.
So when the organizers wanted Dæhlie to come to the medal ceremony he denied. Instead he went back to the finish area to welcome the very last skier across the finish. The media loved this story, as you can imagine, which ended with joint interviews and its after that they became friends.
Source: I'm Norwegian, as Dæhlie, and this story was a big deal in Norway.

Joannie Rochette should be mentioned. Canadian figure skater who won bronze on her home soil in 2010, two days after her mother died. There wasn't a dry eye in the whole country after her performance.

Would be really nice if athletes opted to make the Olympics about something more than themselves 👌

whoislukas I think its just a matter of respect? Like it said it delayed the medal ceremony meaning that they could have handed out the gold, silver and bronze medals out before the last person finished but the person in gold place waited for him.

The norwegian skier won first place but sat thorugh to greet a skier which came in last place. You might not be aware of it but the skier which came in last place was so happy by the action that later on he would name his newborn baby after the norwegian skier

Also, the guy who got last was from Kenya. Not to thrash Kenyans at all, but there's no snow there and in Norway it pretty much snows year-round, so the Norwegian had the upper hand. I see it as a sense of respect for the Kenyan for coming out and representing. GG to them both

Bjørn Dæhlie refused to start the medal ceremony until everyone had finished, he stood waiting for the last guy because that's just the right thing to do, it would be rude not to.

This is a 10 km (6.2 mile) skiing race. There can be a LONG interval between gold and last. I think it was a great show of respect. That being said, at the Olympic level there should be more stringent qualification criteria. But even then, someone could get hurt, pull a hamstring or something, and still want to finish the race, but come in many minutes behind the winner. Medal ceremonies should be scheduled to account for events where there is a reasonable chance of a big gap between finishers.

@0:34 Makes a sweet story, but as soon as his father touches Redmond... he is disqualified. A lesson for good parents--there are times when you must restrain your every urge, watch your children suffer.
(Spoken as a father who was kidnapped by the State, and forbidden to have contact with his daughter on the groundless and vindictive allegations, and against the clear protests of the child.)

True but it was a semi-final and he wasn't going to qualify to move on. He knew this but just wanted to finish. This would be the exception to watching your child suffer. Better to help him across the line than watch him carted off by medical personnel and he knows he didn't finish. As an athlete there is just something compelling about making it over the line even it doesn't mean anything to anyone else.
