Ronald Gabriel Palillo (April 2, 1949 - August 14, 2012) was an American actor and teacher. He was best known for his role as the endearingly dim-witted character Arnold Horshack on the ABC sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter (1975-1979).
In 1975, Palillo was cast as Arnold Horshack, one of the misfit "sweathogs" in the high school sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter, whose antics made him one of the standout characters of the series. In the last season of the series, a backdoor pilot episode for a spin-off series featuring Horshack was produced, but the series was not developed.
Following Kotter, Palillo appeared in leading and supporting roles in various television series and films. He voiced characters on such animated series as Laverne & Shirley in the Army, Darkwing Duck, and Rubik, the Amazing Cube, in which he played the lead character. In 1996, Palillo played himself in several episodes of the television sitcom Ellen, playing the love interest of Ellen's friend Audrey. Palillo also spent a year on the daytime show One Life to Live and also acted in Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986), and the lead in The Curse of Micah Rood.
He returned to New York in 1991, and played such stage roles as Mozart in Amadeus and regionally as George in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Arthur in Camelot and Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls. He appeared on Broadway in 2008 in Broadway Backwards 4, a charity event benefiting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center. Among his other New York City credits were a one-person show in 2000 where he portrayed Nazi criminal Adolf Eichmann in The Diary of Adolf Eichmann off-Broadway. Palillo, in a newspaper interview in 1997, said he lamented his role as Horshack as he was permanently typecast, which he believed had damaged his career. The following year Palillo starred in The Fourposter at the Wayside Theatre in Middletown, Virginia.
Palillo and his partner of 41 years, Joseph Gramm, lived in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. On August 14, 2012, Palillo suffered a heart attack at his home and was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. He died seven months after co-star Robert Hegyes, who also died from a heart attack.
Palillo's funeral service was held in Palm Beach Gardens on August 22, 2012. He is buried at St. Lawrence Cemetery in West Haven, Connecticut. A memorial tribute, directed by Lawrence Leritz and hosted by Tyne Daly, was held to honor and celebrate Palillo's life and career at New York City's Triad Theatre on October 3, 2012
I met Ron, very much by accident. He was there the night when Graumen's Chinese Theatre was premiering Star Wars. I was about 13, and I spotted him. I nearly lost my mind! I was SO excited!!! Not only was it the coolest night ever, to get to see Star Wars, but the fact Ron was there, I felt like the entire night was magic! I LOVED Welcome Back Kotter and Horshack was always a highlight. What a great show. What a great guy!
I watched "Welcome Back Kotter", this morning on Rewind TV. It was where he did the Snowflake ❄ poem. He was my favorite character as well. Gabe and Epstein my next two....they had a Great Cast, it was a Great Show. It sucks getting older!!!
Crazy memory seeing Star wars at the Chinese Theatre
Raining ☔
Thank you for this. Ron was so good and took the character of Arnold out to orbit. No one could have done it better. Sadly he was typecast for it.
Of course. He wasn't actor
My childhood shows. This being one of them . Aw
Hi Scott. Ron went to Cheshire High and when I was at UCONN in Storrs he was there. It was the 90's and no one really bothered him. I remember him walking past the library and he came into the CO-OP where he stopped and was shaking hands with some of the men from the basketball team. He was always kind and everyone seemed to really like him. I never missed a episode of Welcome Back. Thank you Scott for sharing and covering one of Connecticut's legends
He had one of the great underrated character in the history of television.
Nah
What year did he die?
Joseph was his boyfriend ? Horse shack was gay?
I’m 60 years old n grew up watching Welcome Back Kotter, cool video
Oh oh oh Mr. Kotter!! RIP Horshack.
Ron was my sister's favorite. Freddy was my favorite. Vinnie was my friend's fave. I met my dear friend much later on in life. She passed away from a sever bout of Scaret Fever as a child which left her with a horrible case of Rhumatoid Arthritis. She had several surgeries and was on several medications that nurses shamed her for when she was hospitalized. She lost her life in 2018 to Rhumtoid Arthritis. Ironically, I had a dream about her last night. Thank you for this tribute to Ron. He was really extremely talented. Sad he was type casted when he was clearly so much more. I had no idea he was in a super long term committed married relationship. He lasted and still is in a way longer relationship than my marriage. I'm so envious of couples who make it forever, especially in show business/entertainment in a first committed legal relationship. RIP, Ron. I did not know he was in heaven. This was shocking to me. 😢💔. And to his beloved other half, I hope he has the strength to carry on in life when the love of his life was ripped away from him. It's so difficult to to find that perfect one and, especially to not fit society's puzzle pieces, then to suddenly lose that special one... I can't imagine. And to have Hollywood on top of it. I hope Ron's partner is able to carry on with fullness of life. I'm sure it's what Ron would want to happen, to his dearest one. ❤❤🎉.
Hard to believe he died at age 63. He had so much life left.
Sad,he and Marcia Stassman and Robert Hegyes all died very young😢
Apparently not ...
RIP RON. MY FAVORITE CHARACTER WAS BOOM BOOM WASHINGTON. . SO COOL.
Very good video. Brings back memories and emotions, and of course nostalgia. Scott put some effort into this! New subscriber.

41 years..holy cow that's wonderful. I didn't realize he had done so many acting things...Ty Scott
Born in 1971. During the intro the person riding the unicycle was the "new thing" and I couldn't comprehend how someone was riding it... Damn roller skates and skate boards were all new to me.
God bless to all the cast and crew. Thank You for great childhood memories.
Long live the Sweathogs !!!

He was well liked and was lucky to have a wonderful partner who supported him.
Time fly's....🔹🌹🔹🙏
I’m so glad you visited Connecticut and made some videos. I live in Connecticut and we have some really interesting places here. I was a huge fan of welcome back Kotter rest in peace Ron.❤❤❤
Great video, Scott. I met Ron Palillo in 2006 at a horror convention in New Jersey. We had a very brief but really nice conversation. Super cool, down to earth guy. I loved Welcome Back Kotter. “Mista Kotta” 😊 RIP Ron.
I can't even put into words how much I loved this show. It began when I was a junior in high school, so it was right up my alley at the perfect time. I didn't miss a single episode and years later bought a DVD collection of the series. Just lots of laughs and phenomenal actors. I think there are about five actors from that show who have died, and I miss them all. High five to the casting director who knew what talent was and put this whole cast together. It was a perfect match. I did not know the story about Groucho Marx. That's a sad story all on its own. It was pretty classy of them to still give him something to do on the set while at the same time respecting his illness by not exploiting him to the public. Thanks for doing this Scott, I really love it! Also, it may be true that most will be forgotten after a couple of generations, BUT!! Its because of creators like you, that many in our future generations will never be forgotten. So thank you for that! May all of these wonderful cast members and Groucho as well RIP ❤💐
Travolta only class act
My childhood! I loved that show, thanks for spotlighting him 💛

He was so funny! I remember when he even did a commercial for his brother's car dealership here in CT. What a sweet soul.
Omg! Welcome Back Carter was one of my show’s as a preteen that I would make sure not to miss and Horshack’s character brought a lot of laughs. R.I.P. Ron!!!!

Loved this show, just watched an episode this morning with Ron in it. RIP Horshack😢❤. Thank you Scott
More memories from my youth. We probably watched every episode when I was a young kid. I never knew anything about Ron personally, only from the show and there's no way you could forget his character and his acting made it that way. In =m glad to hear a little more about him and his life I never knew about. Thanks for sharing Scott
I loved Welcome Back Kotter and Horshack was my favorite character. RIP Ron, yes, thanks for the laughs.
Yes Scott, it is sad that we will be forgotten one day. I’m 50 something and remember my great grandparents. I don’t remember anyone past them though. Once I’m gone, they’ll be forgotten as well.

My grandparents are also there up on the hill overlooking the Yale Polo Grounds
Watched it every week! Just 1 of the many shows me and my deceased sister would watch together. Good memories.
Thank you Scott for doing the video on Ron Palillo. He was the best character on Welcome Back. Such a wonderful actor ❤
I was in elementary school and Arnold was our inspiration. All the kids would put up their hand to sound like Arnold.
Ooh ooh ooh I loved all of the characters of this show, so funny😆 !!
I remember watching this show as a kid. Horshak was my favorite character, he always bringing the laughs.
I was a little kid when this was on tv and it was very very popular.......

🕊️❤️🙏
Thank you Scott. I was in high school Horseshack would come up in conversations.💐For Ron Have a great day. 🙏👍
I was eight years old when Welcome Back Kotter first aired on Television in 1975. It was a huge hit that everyone loved. Ron Palillo "Horshack" was a riot. The whole show and cast of characters were awesome. I never missed an episode for the shows whole run. Thanks for the video, Scott.
One of my favorite sweathog
Truly a classic TV sitcom, takes me back to the days of awesome TV sitcoms & movies ❤ Thanks for taking us back to the good days Scott ❤
I watched every episode of ""welcome back kotter "and rest in peace to Ron 🕊️🕊️🕊️🕊️
Ron's story made me think of Gary Burghoff who got typecast as Radar O'Reilly from M*A*S*H, it's about the only role he's known for besides a stage role as Charlie Brown. After two failed M*A*S*H spinoffs he quit acting and focused on music, despite being born with a hand deformity he was actually quite a decent jazz drummer and had his own band. Most people think he died but he's very much still alive and living in a trailer park in Florida but also has a summer home in Connecticut.
If you could track him down I bet you could get an interview out of him.
I’m so glad you did this video. I loved Welcome back Cotter and especially Ron Palillo!
Hello 👋 my friend, thank you for another kind and caring video delivered 🥰♥️🙏
thanks again scott for your hard work......love and respect from the uk
All so special. The thought of him or to mention him brings a smile..RIP.
I saw Ron play the Artful Dodger in Oliver at a theatre in San Jose, Ca circa 1978. He was excellent in the part.
Loved...loved...loved this vlog!!
Thank you!! RIP OLD FRIEND. ❤
That’s my fear. That I won’t be remembered. Loved Ron❤. Horshack was my favorite!❤️
Good Evening Scott 🙋🏽. Thank You for inviting me to watch your video ‼️
Beautiful cemetery
my town. everyone in my fam is buried at St. L. That's the Yale tennis courts at Yale Bowl 100 yards away. He was from my hometown Cheshire CT 06410. I appreciate you taking the time for him. please go grab a pie at Pepe' s Abeetz on Worcester for me xx
I love Welcome back Kotter. Horshack was my favorite. I remember reading some time ago that Ron past. i was heartbroken. Thank you for doing a post on him.
I knew nothing about this amazing actor, so thank you for sharing information about him. He seemed hilarious and well respected by his peers. I love that laugh of his. 😂
I was in West Haven in July and went by to pay my respects. I had a difficult time finding his marker because the grounds were overgrown. I spent a few minutes pulling grass so it could be read and recognized. Then I moved on to the cemetery near Yale University where Bart Giamatti and Noah Webster are buried.
When Ron raised his hand and the whole cast had to hold it together was so funny
Loved the show when I was a kid, this brings back great memories!
Loved the show! Also, reminded me that I have an original Welcome Back Kotter board game in our basement. I should drag that out. Thanks for the great vlog, as usual.
Loved that Show! Still Love The Song. Only Antenna TV Users Can Get That Show Now.
I’d read about the 100 episode rule for syndication, too. I guess WBK was an exception because John Travolta became a major Hollywood star. Crazy to think WBK debuted 50 years ago this year.
Aa rip Ron your were adorable God bless thank you Scott for this beautiful video be safe love ya
One of my favorite shows. What’s crazy is that I remember watching the show. I’m old 😂
I was lucky enough to watch the shows when it was first aired.
Loved Welcome Back Kotter and Horshack!
Omgoodness You got me crying. This one was sad! Keep up the good work, love your videos. ❤😊

I loved welcome back kotter. But horshack was my favorite sweat hog.❤❤❤ I enjoyed all the characters on the show
Thank you Scott. 💞
I had no idea he was in Friday the 13th that blew me away when you showed us that
That was a terrific death scene. In a cemetery! What a coincidence!
Good stuff as always.
He is my favorite on Welcome Back Kotter. I still watch the reruns.❤
This was a family show in my house as a kid as we ALL sat down and watched every week! I had a "Sweathogs" tee shirt my Mom bought me Too!! RIP RON!!!
Family shows so much more innocence back in the 70’s.
“ up your nose with a rubber hose” so much silliness. Was a cute show
I worked with and am still friends with Ron's niece. Great video Scott!
Well done Scott! Thank you
Hi Scott how are you can't wait to see this video ❤
Thank you Scott I love your videos
Hi Scott love that show. Thanks you for taking us to the place with you
I loved that show! Ron and John were great in it
I loved that show !! Always watched it , he was so funny with John travolta ! Sad he’s gone , glad you made this video
I loved Welcome Back Kotter and especially Arnold Horshack. I was around the same age, the show started when I was in Jr. High and ended just before I graduated 1980. Even though they were in New York...and I was in Arkansas the characters were still so relatable...we had all the characters.... I am not ashamed to admit I was the Horshack of our class.... not as funny, but I was the nerdy one that didn't fit in. Ron did such a fantastic job playing that character. He is missed. Thank you, Scott. Well done as always, the respect you show makes you shine above all the rest.
Thank you for sharing this. I really like that young man. He was so darn funny, and his laughter was something else. Stay safe.💜🦋
We are all born and we all die some sooner than others RIP Ron I loved Horshack on Welcome back Kotter.
I'm old enough that I watched the show originally. I always liked the opening jokes Gabe would tell Marcia. Good video Scott, stay safe ❤️
My sister and i loved that show, we were just teenagers when it came out.
I was just watching an episode of Kotter last night. I thought of him and Epstein being gone and thought of your channel. Perhaps an unpopular opinion; but I think the show was more Horshack’s than Barbarino’s. In other words he stood out even more to me. This one makes me sad but I’m glad you honored him. Thanks, Scott.
