  • A BIG thank you to Meze Audio for providing the Liric for review, greatly appreciated. The Liric has 2K build quality but does it sound like 2K?

That is sometimes how the 99s sounded to me...a hollow sound initially, but that is something that would seem to go away after listening a bit.also, they seemed to get a little confused rhythmically. I love them...lol.

Your reviews weigh heavily on my purchasing choices. I appreciate the total honesty (as indicated by your moniker).
That being said, I’ve been wavering on getting these headphones. I own both the Solos and Rai Pentas and have been debating to get a pair of Meze closed-back cans. As beautiful and sexy as they are, I find it hard pressed to buy them.
So, my options right now are these, Empire Ear Hero, or the Campfire Audio Solaris. I own various iems of CFA’s product catalog. I’m very interested in Empire Ears offerings but totally undecided on which to get. I’ve basically scratched the Liric (for now) but plan to get my wife to buy me some new iems or possibly a combo of iem and CFA Cascades for my fiftieth, which is right around the corner. Do you have any suggestions?
Edit: oh yeah, also interested in the Focal Celestee as well.

Sorry haven't heard the Focal Celestee. I have only heard a few Campfire Audio and that was like 3 years ago at an audio show. As for Empire Ears, I am somewhat limited on those as well. To be honest, Empire Ears hasn't really hit the spot for me on most gear; the ESR and Wraith were the two that I enjoyed the most. The Noble Sultan is a solid option. I highly recommend the CTM Da Vinci X and ADV-Sound M5-12D.
Thank you for the kind words, greatly appreciated. I am glad you find the videos helpful.

Thanks for the review, I was really on the fence between these and the ether CX before I found this video. I'm curious though, did you ever EQ both the Ether C and Liric for a bass boost, and if so how far apart was the impact (pluck/percussion rumble/meatiness) is after EQ?

How's the clamp force Dave? Out of the headphones you've heard, which do you prefer? If you could only own 2 closed and 2 open, what would they be? I ask because your ears seem to hear a lot like mine.

Just listened to a blind test MP3 in 160 and 320 kbps, and a WAV in whatever size they were. Through headphones on my Mac I couldn't really distinguish which was the WAV out of the three. Ended up guessing in most of the samples I listened to.l. Be interesting to do a blind test with different headphones.

    • @tomdavis6371
      @tomdavis6371 Рік тому

Hey, I don't wish to be an ass, but if you can't hear a difference between 160 kbps and WAV, save your money by avoiding the expense of hi end headphones. You can still be very pleased listening to much less expensive cans. In my own personal experience listening to pretty good quality gear, mp3 doesn't sound good at anything lower than 192.

I'm kind of confused - you kept saying "LCD-2 Closed" when showing LCD-XC. Which one did you mean?
Also if you meant XC, would there be a noticeable difference how XC and Liric perform in competitive gaming as an additional use case?
At first Liric looked like a really good upgrade to my Oppo PM-3 as a daily driver for both in house as well as portable music listening (and gaming). I wonder if getting LCD-XC for in house and keeping PM-3 for portable wouldn't be a better idea after all.

    • @TheHonestAudiophile

Believe it or not I know what the LCD 2 Closed looks like because I own one.
I don't own the XC I own the LCD-2 Closed, here is a link to my review of the LCD 2 Closed! ua-cam.com/video/3dLT8HHvdyc/v-deo.html
Sorry, I do not know how the LCD XC compares to the Liric. I haven't heard an XC since Axpona 2019 and I don't remember enough to give a fair comparison.

Trying to compensate flaws of a headphone with different setups of Amps and DACs is imho not the right way to go.
if you own , let´s say 5 different HP Amps, and 1 of them lowers the flaws with a Headphone, is this making the HP better? No it doesn´t.
Why should i buy a specific amp to make a HP sound good or endurable? This makes no sense for me.
in this case, from a 2K Headphone I expect perfection in every aspect and nothing between.

@@TheHonestAudiophile first, don´t get me wrong Dave, you are one, if not my favourite UA-camr for audio equipment.
But, so called Synergy is a endless rabbit hole for wallets, dicussions and one of the reasons most audiophiles, not you, are full of shit.
Same with audiophiles concept of "neutral", What is neutral connecting a cold sounding Headphone with a warm sounding amp?
Thats not "neutral, this is a mess.
When I get a new headphone, I plug it into my G111 and after listining, i can you tell exactly what is going on with this headphones.
If they sound bad, lets say, wrong timbre, harsh highs or mids, poor clarity etc., then they are bad and this wil not change.
Maybe there are other more expensive amps and they sound a bit better on them, but the point is, this Headphone will ever sound bad on most amps, so it will never become a good sounding HP:

That's most of your issue solved right there, your expectations. That, in fact, is the reason most humans are crushingly disappointed, too many expectations/demands with a lot of Dunning-Kruger sauce. I would present this small "argument" (for lack of a better word) that a headphone itself shouldn't be judged standalone, but rather with the amp/dac/cable/etc pairing, as equipment alters/enhances/etc the sound overall, therefore judging it by itself does it no justice.
