Loved your review! I too have bought this headphone and it is one of my best headphones for me as well. I am a professional pianist and these headphones simply gives the best rendition of live instruments. I keep seeing talk about resolution, neutrality, transperence, but often I found them not engaging enough and quite frankly, not as true renditions of live instruments and for me especially accustic grand pianos. Alot of other youtubers have given the meze not the greatest review based on resolution, but Iv listend to alot of their favorites with high resolution, and grand piano sounds anemic. Meze empyrean gives the live experience, the accustic instrumnts sound as crisp, warm and engaging as in real life.
Absolutely agree 💯 Sadly, a lot of reviewers put emphasis on resolution, detail retrieval and stage width and they don't put emphasis on tone, timbre, note weight, natural and realistic staging. I think the Empyrean is spot on when it comes to what matters most, sounding natural and realistic. I am glad you enjoy the Empyrean as much as I do. Thanks for watching and commenting.
This is so true! I have played guitar for over 30 years and recently got into the audiophile world, and can't understand what sound signature people are chasing. The Empyrean is the closest to the natural tones of my acoustic guitars that I have ever heard. So glad to see other musicians hearing what I heard, makes me feel a lot less crazy ! lol

This is the most exciting review I've seen to date. Amazing!
Oops, forgot to talk about the differences in the pads:
I prefer the leather pads as they give the most realistic and natural sound that is described in the video. The Alcantara pads add a warmth and thickness to the sound but the details are lost slightly and the overall sound isn't as natural sounding BUT it is a fun sound that I also enjoy.

I've only heard the Abyss gear once at an audio meet for like 10 minutes, can't compare as I don't remember enough other then I liked the Empyrean more.

@@Dan.a.k.a.bradpitt Wrong way to look at it because then you won’t experience and enjoy a certain level of audio. Simple as that. None of us would be sticking with headphones such as this one if sub 1000$ came close in terms of detail, timbre, soundstage etc.
@@Dan.a.k.a.bradpitt That totally depends on what you’re into. Currently I am into headphones and the HE1000SE transport me into audio orgasm territory. At one point i was into motorcycles and my disposable money went into that. Strictly speaking neither are investments, buy mutual funds for that.
I remember back two years ago when Zeos first reviewed the Meze Empyreans he claimed that they were the best sounding headphones he had ever heard. So many people called him a shill, and many more reviewers came out and critiqued the problems with the headphones and basically called him delusional for liking them so much. There is something interesting about the audiophile industry where you seem to gain more respect for calling a product bad and are somehow a better reviewer for disliking more things (and god forbid you actually love something that others dislike, then you're clearly deaf). It is quite interesting to see that he was not alone in holding the Empyreans in such high regard.

Dude, this review was just amazing, you covered literally everything I wanted to know about these. One day, when I finish college and get a job, I hope to get a pair of these, but until then, I'll just keep dreaming and hoping, but hope is still a powerful thing. These took the place of the LCD-X as my new dream headphones.

Damn. You ended up becoming the audiophile reviewer who's opinion I trusted the most on UA-cam. I puchased the Meze Rai solo's partly because of your review(I love them btw!), I also stayed away from the Audeze LCD-2 Classics based on your review. I found myself agreeing with many of your videos and trusting your opinions on audio. I'm sad to see you go but I'm glad you found what you were looking for. I can relate to that feeling, I haven't heard the Empyrean but years ago, I heard a pair of headphones that had been hyped to the moon and back. Thinking to myself, meh, how good could they be, before putting them on..... Heard Andrea Bocelli - Conte Partiro and my jaw hit the ground, floored me. That headphone was the HD650. Dave, great to see you be true to your word. For myself, the endgame was Utopia, and then I've found enjoyment in cheaper IEMs. Now I realize, my preferences are pretty adaptable. The Utopia is still the most realistic to my ears, especially when listening to binaural recordings, spatial dsp, and 3D game audio. Congrats!

Focal Utopia is an amazing headphone that I also like a lot but the Empyrean just has that special sauce for my ears.

It is certainly obvious in listening to you speak of these headphones that you are passionate about them and your pursuit of fine sounding audio, and congratulations on your purchase. Three grand is too rich for me but I wouldn't judge anyone based on how they spend their cash. I own the Audeze LCD-2 and have the Focal Celestee on the way, and that will most likely be my last headphone purchase as well. I've known for all too long that the journey can be a lot of fun but one day it's key to find something one can live with because there are more things in life than just audio gear. Its a weird feeling since I loved the hobby and loved to learn about all the ins and outs of it.

Hi Dave! I have enjoyed many of your videos and will miss seeing you. I also love my Meze Empyrean, which I have owned for almost 2 years. As you noted the stock cable is not ideal. A better cable is the Meze upgrade copper cable, or the Corpse Cable Gravedigger. From the time I got my Empyrean, it was my favorite headphone, until yesterday, when I received my new Meze Elite. Yes, it is a significant improvement over the Empyrean. There is a good review of the Elite on Headfonia. I hope you get a chance to hear the Elite.
I have the Gravedigger and haven't heard the copper upgrade cable.

Mytek Liberty is my favorite with the Empyrean. Yes the plan is to review dacs, amps, headphones and IEM in written form.

@@TheHonestAudiophile The only issue is that I've used a lot more of my budget for the headphones than planned - so have less to spend on an amp and DAC! I was going to buy desktop separates, but now I'm thinking about a combo portable unit. I don't suppose you've listened to the Empyrean through an ifi micro iDSD Signature or Diablo? I'd appreciate your suggestions on anything really around this price point that works great with the Empyrean. I'd hate to not do the headphone justice with a poor DAC/amp. Cheers Dave 👍
I have heard the Empyrean on both and you can't go wrong with either. Both the Diablo and iDSD Signature are great pairing with the Empyrean.If you want a desktop setup the Neo is another option from iFi.

What a GREAT review Dave. I'm sorry to see you leave but I can understand. I am in the process of receiving my Meze Empyrean. The reason I'm spending so much is they seem to have everything I'm looking for in a headphone. Never heard them in person so I'm hoping they live up to everything I have read and viewed on UA-cam. I just bought these too. You nailed, it is indeed end game level. Many reviewers dislike these but the trick is these scales unbelievable good. Also the leather pads is the way to go. With Alcantara these sound like any other headphone. With leather pads it is just like im in the room with players. Information level is out of hook. As ex musican these gives the sound and decya and reverb of notes the best of any headphone. And i got HD800, LCD-X, hifiman arya STAX L700 and these beast all of those with ease. But with high end dac and amp. I use ifi pro idsd and omg. This is too the end of gear hoarding for me. 😊
