I'm 19 and I'm about to begin my journey with tretinoin tmr... this REALLY helped omg luv uuu, you've gained a new subscriber😭❤️ you + Dr dray= my skincare bible
I started by mixing 2 drops of retinol to my night moisturizer. Used it every other day, for about 2 months. Just started using the Retinol directly on my skin. I am using the La Roche Posay Retinol.
A very intelligent approach. I wish doctors would have provided this kind of information 25 years ago when I first tried Retin A. I live in a dry climate and without conscientious maintenance my skin is always dehydrated and often feels like it is falling off in winter. Knowing that I could have used a moisture sandwich when using a retinoid would have helped greatly. I gave up on it as my skin felt like it was drying up so badly. Ironically, I have used retinols for years with no problem, but I always added a layer of moisture over them. My dermatologist years ago suggested doing the same with a retinoid would make it ineffective. So much for that notion. I am thinking of trying tretinoin again so I am gathering all the info I can before I set off on the journey. By the way, I ordered your sun screen. It is wonderful, especially in a dry climate. I plan to stock up before winter. I need all the moisture I can get when the Mercury dips to -30 C (or -43 C as it did this past February!).
I just moved up to 0.1% and to be safe, am moisturizing first, with a fairly heavy moisturizer.... I’m at about day 4, I noticed some small areas of peeling/dryness. So even over a thick moisturizer, Tretinoin cream works. I have read some studies that say it penetrates easier and works better on moisturized skin.
Dee Wye I actually recently read an article that said a lot of dermatologists think eye cream is a scam. I was shocked and now am suspicious of all my pricey eye creams. 😭 Apparently many believe that if your moisturizer or other skin care products have good enough ingredients for your face that it’s good enough for your eyes too (unless it says not to use around your eyes).

I myself is soon close to my 40's, and talking with other people at the same age, I hear a difference in rutines. Like a lot of people rub hard on their eyelids and eye area, when they remove makeup and do their skincare rutine, insted of just treating that area carefully to prevent earlier wrinkles. Like not touching your face all the time (have been a habit of mine), also gives less breakout, so I personally think a good skincare rutine and thinking about what you do to your face, can help your skins condition for the rest of your life. That ofcouse does not mean I am right, but it works for my skin, and I save a lot of money.
A good eye cream has the same exact ingredients as a good moisturizer. “Good” meaning a mix of humectants, occlusives, and maybe some antioxidants, and NO fragrance or essential oils or citrus. If you already have a good moisturizer, it is more than efficient for your eye area. The only time you would use a separate eye cream is if A. a prescribing medical professional recommends it, B. you want to use a targeted active ingredient like retinol or phytic acid ONLY in the eye area (which in this case, you don’t need to find a product specifically advertised for the eye area. You can use a face serum with hyaluronic acid *just* around your eyes; no one is going to break into your house and arrest you), or C. you use an SPF eye product in the morning for added protection.

Dr. Sam, I know there are people like me with rosacea which have heard about using retinol. Nowadays, there seems to be two perspectives on the procedure to follow. One is doing it very slowly to avoid irritation as much as possible. The other one is going strong, no moisturizer, to get a short, but acute irritation in order to prevent chronic irritation. I'd love you to adress this topic, because my face is getting worse, but I don't know who and which way to go. Thank you.
I've personally heard a Spanish dermatologist, who also thought irritation was a big no-no for rosacea, until she received training from Dr. Obagi in CA. She herself had the most reactive skin, but decided to take this approach and succeded. Of course, she now sells Obagi products at her clinic. I'm both hesitant to be pushed into buying a specific product and also ruining my skin.
Lucía García Well, thats troubling that a dermatologist is going around saying that. Hopefully Dr. Sam will answer soon. If not and while I’m thinking about it, you might try Dr. Dray’s channel. If I’m remembering right, she has had eczema in the past and uses Retina-A regularly. Seems unnecessary to me to suffer when there may be ways not to. I know rosacea is different from eczema, but there could be similar challenges in having them and using Retin-A.
THANK YOU for talking about buffering - sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many videos talk about putting retinol before moisturizer and never mention you might want to put retinoal AFTER moisturizer! Then they complain about how it's too strong. Slow and steady wins the marathon race.
Thank you for another valuable information. I’ve always been intimidated using Retinoids in case I apply improperly and will have a negative effect on my skin. Can’t wait to start using one!
I purchased a prescription Tretinoin online a year ago and started using it but quickly went from perfect skin to dry skin badly. I stopped using it completely and did a lot of research then decided to see a dermatologist bc $260 for a tube was stupid. So she called me in a prescription and though it was still $250 I was impatient with insurance so used a discount card and paid $59 and started again tonight. Thanks for these tips, Dr. Sam! I've been using Tazorac 0.1% gel for over 10 years and love it! It's worked wonders for my acne, texture, and hyperpigmentation.
lilajane3 I hope Dr. Sam will do a video on Advanced Retinoid Usage. This video seems to imply it can be used on the neck but cautiously. Hot & Flashy has a video in which she says her neck will not tolerate Retin-A so she uses a Retinaldehyde. I’m sure neck usage is a very individual thing.
I am curious. I guess I accidentally got some on my neck a few days ago and it's been itching nonstop! I would like to know if something could be done about the lines there & occasional pimple though.
I am comfused too. Most doctors insist that retinol should be applied to skin first to dry skin! Some advise that it works better without moisturizer... I don't know anything anymore .. 🤔🤔
Lovely to see you in a video again! I have rosacea which is totally under control thanks to laser treatment, have been wanting to add a retinol into my skincare routine, which strength would you recommend starting with? x
Could you speak about the evidence regarding the effectiveness of each kind of retinoid, like Adapalene vs Tretinoin vs Tazarotene vs Isotretinoin and how figure out which one is best for you?
@@jenGeeJushawshee What a strange and unhelpful comment. Not that I need to justify my comment to you, or anyone on this platform, but I was referring to the buffering technique. I did not start using Retin-A blindly, I have a dermatologist. Persnickety comments like the one you left are unnecessary and unhelpful. Don't throw shade - just watch the videos, and leave a POSITIVE comment if you are so compelled. Cheers.
Can you please make a video on how to store products with active ingredients, especially those that are packaged as droppers, and in places where temperatures are pretty high in the summers?
I use Cereve skin renewing cream serum first. It has niacinimide in it and it’s super light weight. I wait around 30 min then apply my Retin A. I use to use it without a buffer and my skin never adjusted. It was constantly peeing and looked terrible when I wore makeup. This way has worked so much better for me.
Amit Patel My dermatologist recommended Cetaphil face cleanser before Tretinoin because he said you need nothing to interfere with it working... so far I love how it makes my face feel so soft!
Hello Dr. Sam I wonder what do you think about Differin (adapalene) for anti-aging, it is supposed to give less irritation. I am 64 yrs old, never had acne, I'm used to 1% retinol. Thanks
hi just found your channel . This was wonderful I will soon be 56 and have had acne , large pores all my life . Tried retinols but always had terrible results .This was so helpful i will have try again
I usually will wash my face then I use a hydrating toner the hada labo one to be exact then I let it dry then I apply my retinol which is the roc deep wrinkle serum then I use my three ordinary serums them my moisturizer after. Do u think I'm doing it wrong cuz I haven't had any irritation or is it not doing anything cuz I am piling to much other product on. I use it three days out of the week btw
I am desparate to find the answer of the following question - do I need to use retinol every day to maintain it's long-term anti-aging benefits? Or 2-3 nights a week will be still as effective long-term?
Hi there...i think that using two exfoliating products together is not advisable, it might be too irritating for the skin...i use glycolic acid in the morning and tretenoine at night.
I use acids and retinoids on alternate nights. I’m not keen on using actives in the morning, even though I always wear SPF - I treat it more as time for hydrating and protecting the skin 😊
Hi, thanks for the helpful video I have a few questions: first, how long do you continue with this regimen, once the acne is treated? And when you stop, what do you recommend to prevent further breakouts, especially if you don't want to use retinoid long-term? Also, if you're using adapalene gel and also taking oral multivitamin supplements (containing Vit A), is there any danger of over-dose?
Hi! I have a question I use Paul’s choice retinol cream. It does not irritate my skin at all. Should I use a higher percentage of retinol? It’s 0.5 % I believe
I started with The Ordinary Gran. Retinoid 2%, then worked up to 5%, then switched over to Differin which I am doing right now. If you have sensitive skin, it's easier to ease into the strong stuff. A long time ago I did straight into Differin and it felt like I fried my face off!
Ethan Trenaman I slather myself in castor oil after 15 minutes applying of Retin -a. It does the job to keep your skin bouncy and hydrated. ( it is very sticky though)
How long after applying the retinoid can you apply moisturizer again? Also, what if you decide you can step up your retinoid and find out that it's too soon and you have irritation that's bothersome but you don't want to stop? Do you just return to the routine you were doing that wasn't as bothersome and then re-evaluate in another two weeks?
Would this routine be ok for someone who’s not sensitive to retinoids but tends to have flaky skin on chin and around the eye?: Cleanse, niacinamide serum, prescripted retinoic acid cream, mositurizer? Since my mom already applies a 10% niacinamide serum before the retinoic acid cream and she’s not that sensitive, I assume that’s enough to “prepare” the skin. And the moisturizer at the end would prevent flaky skin
Hi Sam! Could you adress the question of what strength to use when you are just starting of? And should one use a cream form or an oil form? Hugs xx from Sweden :)
What if you don’t need an all over application? My problem area is just my undereyes and the beginnings of “crows feet” do I still need to buffer my retinol application with moisturizer goggles? I am using Paula’s Choice 1% solely around my eyes (except for eyelids) I do get dry under the eyes but it’s no big issue.....wondering just how slow I should go? I apply every second night after cleansing and apply my favorite hydrating oil a few hours later before I go to bed.
Skincare is preventative. It would not be advisable to focus treatment only on the problematic areas. The idea is to “prevent” or slow down the appearance of wrinkles... not attempt to reverse what’s already shown up in the same way feeling thirsty means you are already dehydrated. We’re supposed to try to stay ahead of the game. Don’t skip out on the rest of the face.
Do you still use a serum? Plus I do want to start using a retinol cream where can I get it but I don't want to spend to much on one product, thank you for your help and advice.
Does moisturizing first dilute the benefits of tretinoin? I don’t know if I’m using too much but, I have been using it for years and deal with redness still.
Hello Dr. Sam,,, What about those of us who have been using retinoids for a while,, How often should I use retinoids to achieve the maximum benefit? It does cause me dryness still. I'm on a skincare routine that includes hyaluronic acid and niacinimide, amongst other products targeting occasional horomonal acne and especially post-inflammation hyper-pigmentation. Thank you for all your informative videos! Hind (All the way from Bahrain)
I love the cleanser, it’s ideal as it’s fragrance free, non-comedogenic and doesn’t strip the skin, but still removes makeup. I bought the flawless serum in September 2019. Unfortunately, I always had an event or an interview coming up and I was afraid of ‘purging’ /peeling / dry patches etc so never got round to using it. In the current situation where I’m less likely to see people, I thought it would be the perfect chance to start to use the flawless serum. I would like to confirm the consistency / use by date (on the bottle it has the 12m logo, which I think means it lasts 12 months once opened). When I used it, there were small ‘grains’ or lumps in the serum, not loads, just a few and I just wondered if this was normal/ok to sill use?
Thank you for showing and explaining the proper use of retinoids around the mouth. I just started adapalene and was told not to apply it around mouth/eyes. It was confusing to me since other retinoids are used there. I moisturize first, and use Vaseline on lips. Thank you for a great video. What do you recommend for eyes? Thank you! :)
I'm about to start introducing differin to my skincare as it was prescribed by my derm. Thanks for this informative video - def calmed my anxieties of the purge process which this product causes!! I'm totally aligned on your slow dosage and introduction to the skin process but what about taking antibiotics such as minocycline as well to manage the purge? Is this pairing recommended? What's your take on this?
I put mine on the first thing after I cleanse and once it has absorbed then I add the moisturizer around the sensitive areas because I want the debridement of those particular areas so they can regenerate I am 50 but when I was 30 I looked much older
can you tell me if you put retinol on the backs of your hands at night please and also what handcream you use during the day, thankyou. i use a medic 8 chrystal retinol , i think its the one you used in this video, do you reccommend that ?. x

Anonymous65 I tried and tried to use retin a in all forms and strengths and couldn’t tolerate it. Got a prescription for differin (adapalene) and it works wonders using her same technique.
jenni jen I hope Dr. Sam will answer your question. My dermatologist says Differin helps prevent fine lines and wrinkles. I have not asked her if it helps with collagen production, which would be the best way to prevent/lessen the effects of aging. Dr. Dray says Tretinoin has the most research behind it. Check out Dr. Dray’s video on Why I Stopped Using Differin.
@@wap9137 I love Dr dray too, she is great and do informative! She said in one of her videos that there is not enough research/data that adapalene helps with anti aging. I was left with this question too. What other products can be used before or after? Serums? I do the 7 layer of Korean beauty routine. Would all this come after my layers of toners and essences?
Hi. I'm 36 and I've never used retinoids before. I'd like to start using it following your very useful tips but I'm a little bit anxious since I have sensitive and dry skin and suffering also from couperose. I'd like to know if you recommend it also to patients who have this type of skin. The only thing I know is that my skin tolerates very well AHA. I would also like to ask you if it's possible to use retinoids during the summer and if, in time, it's possible to use it in the eye area, since it is the one more prone to form wrinkles. Thank you so much in advance and thank you for your very informative videos.

2. Don't let retinoid collect in skin folds
3. Moisturizer goggles (around eyes)
4. 5 to 10 min break
5. Protect the lips
6. Start slow and use small amount initially

How to start for rosacea skin? And which one is good for sensitive rosacea prone skin?
Excellent. So helpful. Thank you Dr. Bunting. Just found your great videos.
Thanks for these tips, Dr. Sam! I've been using Tazorac 0.1% gel for over 10 years and love it! It's worked wonders for my acne, texture, and hyperpigmentation.
Wish I had seen this video before I started. I am 28 and two weeks in , thanks for the awesome vid💕
Finally a reliable source of useful information
I’m using Differin with clindamycin phosphate pledgets so far so good
Thank you Dr Sam loved the video, I have been using retin a now for 11 years and love it 😊
Hi! Do you do cleanse> retinoid> moisturizer?
Wish I had seen your video before applying it under my eyes ...
it really got very sensitive
⚡
I hope you will do an advance retinoid video. I have been using Tretinoin .05% on my face for a year. I want to try it on my neck if possible.
lilajane3 I hope Dr.
Should the goal be the eventually apply the retinoids first before moisturizer?
I am comfused too. Most doctors insist that retinol should be applied to skin first to dry skin! Some advise that it works better without moisturizer... I don't know anything anymore .. 🤔🤔
Hi doctor, thanks for the informative video. One question: can i start differin in summer to treat acne? Thanks a lot.
Thank you so much for making this video!
So glad I saw this video! Just started using my retinoid cream tonight
Christie S how is it working for u
Ali D I don’t like it, I used it for like 8 weeks, made me so greasy and break out, did not improve either
I've been using Retin-A for two years and I did not know this is how I should be applying. Thank you for this Dr. Sam.
Wow, you did zero research!
Cheers.
Best video on how to apply retinol ,thank u 💜
Glad it was helpful!❤️
Can you please make a video on how to store products with active ingredients, especially those that are packaged as droppers, and in places where temperatures are pretty high in the summers?
I use Cereve skin renewing cream serum first. It has niacinimide in it and it’s super light weight. I wait around 30 min then apply my Retin A. I use to use it without a buffer and my skin never adjusted. It was constantly peeing and looked terrible when I wore makeup. This way has worked so much better for me.
hello mam,
can you please inform that, can i use cetaphil gentle cleanser before using tretinoin? is it skin friendly?
Amit Patel
My dermatologist recommended Cetaphil face cleanser before Tretinoin because he said you need nothing to interfere with it working... so far I love how it makes my face feel so soft!
@@rainbowsandflowers7920 thanx for replying,,,considering it has alcohol so i was afraid about its interference with tretenoin.
Hello Dr. Sam I wonder what do you think about Differin (adapalene) for anti-aging, it is supposed to give less irritation. I am 64 yrs old, never had acne, I'm used to 1% retinol. Thanks
Great clear video
Hi mam is there any serum for brightening the skin ? Thank you 😊
Such a great video!
Is my tretinoin still working if I am not experiencing the purging, flaking dryness, irritation?
Have you experienced those side effects yet? I'm about to start but afraid for the side effects. How do you apply the tretinoin ?
Hey, I’m about to start but afraid of all side effects that comes along with it. How are you applying yours?
Best, and I do mean BEST, how to put on/use/apply/start retinol video. Thank you Dr. Sam from your new subscriber
hi just found your channel .
Thanks Dr. Sam! What do you think about exfoliating with glycolic acid before applying a Retinoid?
Laura Johnson funny!! It was also the question i was about to write!!!
Hi there...i think that using two exfoliating products together is not advisable, it might be too irritating for the skin...i use glycolic acid in the morning and tretenoine at night.
Linda Said thank you!
Linda Said that was my point, not using together but the glicolic in the morning and retinol at night!
I use acids and retinoids on alternate nights. I’m not keen on using actives in the morning, even though I always wear SPF - I treat it more as time for hydrating and protecting the skin 😊
Really helpful video thank you!
Thank you so much. I started it 3 wks ago for Hormonal Acne. I have been using the wrong way all along. Thanks for d great tips.
My Family how did it work for you? I, starting it tonight and I’m scared
Excellent video! Cheers!
Hey! Do you need to put a moisture buffer before your nightly serum or is gentle enough to put straight on skin?
Hi, thanks for the helpful video
I have a few questions: first, how long do you continue with this regimen, once the acne is treated?
And when you stop, what do you recommend to prevent further breakouts, especially if you don't want to use retinoid long-term?
Also, if you're using adapalene gel and also taking oral multivitamin supplements (containing Vit A), is there any danger of over-dose?
when should we stop buffering?
Very informative- thank you
Hi! I have a question I use Paul’s choice retinol cream. It does not irritate my skin at all. Should I use a higher percentage of retinol? It’s 0.5 % I believe
WHAT A GREAT DETAILED VIDEO!
Which retinoid product is safest for a beginner with sensitive skin like a baby, acne prone too? Which lip balm you use?
I started with The Ordinary Gran. Retinoid 2%, then worked up to 5%, then switched over to Differin which I am doing right now. If you have sensitive skin, it's easier to ease into the strong stuff. A long time ago I did straight into Differin and it felt like I fried my face off!
The Retin-A gel is so hard to use because it dries so quickly!
Ethan Trenaman I slather myself in castor oil after 15 minutes applying of Retin -a. It does the job to keep your skin bouncy and hydrated. ( it is very sticky though)
Agreed! It evaporates within seconds!
Would this routine be ok for someone who’s not sensitive to retinoids but tends to have flaky skin on chin and around the eye?:
Cleanse, niacinamide serum, prescripted retinoic acid cream, mositurizer?
Since my mom already applies a 10% niacinamide serum before the retinoic acid cream and she’s not that sensitive, I assume that’s enough to “prepare” the skin. And the moisturizer at the end would prevent flaky skin
Would you say Differin would be a good starter especially for rosacea?
Hi Sam! Could you adress the question of what strength to use when you are just starting of? And should one use a cream form or an oil form? Hugs xx from Sweden :)
Sandra Ros
There is 0.25
0.5 and 0.1...start with the lowest strength and depending on your skin reaction increase strength accordingly
C V thank you! That makes total sense
Thank you for a brilliant explanation x
Do you still use a serum? Plus I do want to start using a retinol cream where can I get it but I don't want to spend to much on one product, thank you for your help and advice.
Does moisturizing first dilute the benefits of tretinoin? I don’t know if I’m using too much but, I have been using it for years and deal with redness still.
It goes without saying we use sunscreen all year round. However would u recommend to use retinoid during summer period?
2 weeks later...crickets..
Hello! thanks so much for the video! Once your skin has acclimated, do you stop buffering at any point? When do you apply it after cleansing?
I think that's the goal. After you are used to the product, apply on cleansed skin so the ingredient can go that much deeper.
Where to buy retinoids? Please advise
Is it safe to use if you have rosacea?
Super helpful guide, thank you Sam. You explain everything so clearly, thank you! X
Can you please do video on how to get rid of Millia? What are the best products to do the work?
When I used it, there were small ‘grains’ or lumps in the serum, not loads, just a few and I just wondered if this was normal/ok to sill use?
how much should i wait before applying moisturizer?
I really like your channel. 😀 It’s straight to the point without the added filler subscribe, post notifications etc
can you tell me if you put retinol on the backs of your hands at night please and also what handcream you use during the day, thankyou. i use a medic 8 chrystal retinol , i think its the one you used in this video, do you reccommend that ?. x
Thank you for this. I got a free deluxe sample of Drunk Elephant Passioni retinol and had no idea how to use it without getting dry and irritated skin.
Thank you right time to wacth this video I just started retinol 1 day ago .thanks for you .you get me out of big trouble I didn't know I need moisture my skin first
I love your videos. I understand you are very busy. However, I wish you would post skincare videos more frequently. Also, do you ever use tazarotene versus tretinoin in your practice for anti-aging?
Anonymous65 I tried and tried to use retin a in all forms and strengths and couldn’t tolerate it. Got a prescription for differin (adapalene) and it works wonders using her same technique.
@@nancypeterson2489 do you the adapelene is working for anti aging? Thanks 🙂
jenni jen I hope Dr.
But other people I have seen on youtube have said they thought that they have seen improvement in fine lines and wrinkles.. hope this helps :)
jenni jen Thank you. Yes, that is helpful.
What about using retinoid over the counter 0.025 for a beginner plz?
question about layering. Can you layer a niacinamide moisturizer over a vitamin c serum without loosing efficancy of any of them?
I was left with this question too. What other products can be used before or after? Serums? I do the 7 layer of Korean beauty routine. Would all this come after my layers of toners and essences?
Can I use coconut oil instead of moisturiser before retinoids?
@Tinuciel82D Watching Dr.Sam's YT Videos and following her on Instagram I'm very sure that she is going to release her own Retinol/Retinoid very soon!! And as usual she'll explain exactly how to use best 🙂😘
Maggy abc Oh, I hope she does!!!!!
Hey I have a question, Can I use adapalene directly onto my skin without applying moisturizer first? I've been using adapalene for quite some time by putting moisturizer first, and I wonder if is that possible??..
