    if that is how much sunscreen we actually need to apply on a daily basis, why on earth do they all come in 30-50ml bottles (max 100ml for face) ?! it's just not economically practical for most people to purchase a bottle of £30 sunscreen every 10 days!

    • @garvenshar6846

      Probably because most people still don't know the harm of sunlight, so rarely use it. What kind of sunscreen do you buy? Low priced sunscreen is usually just about 10 dollars or even lower here.

      No offense to the good doctor, but given that she lives in London and is rocking a pair of Louboutin heels in the title sequence, something tells me she doesn't worry about a £30 bottle of sunscreen lasting her 10 days.

      TheFluffy1966 Hi! After years of experimenting, I found Paula's Choice Resist Super Light Wrinkle Defence... Seriously the best. SPF 30+, feels just like a normal moisturiser, totally matte and oil free, fragrance free, full of vitamins and antioxidants, a perfect base and primer for foundation. Totally smooths over skin and blurs our imperfections, no white cast. I wear it every single day and no longer need a makeup primer. I put my makeup on at 6am and it lasts 10-12 hours every day in the Australian climate. Also very reasonably priced. If you can get your hands on Paula's Choice then I highly recommend. Paula's Choice sell sample sizes, if you wanted to try before committing to a full size. X

She's certainly interested me in using sunscreen more than I do. And yes, the model's skin looked good after application of the screen. Actually, one thing that is ringing bells for me is that I often find sunscreen makes my ageing paws look better than most hand creams do. Just seem to look fresher and more healthy somehow! I'm quite meticulous in sunscreen application and use one every single day in the quantity you have mentioned. It's the one skincare item I am always buying. As I don't rely on the spf in my makeup even when touching up my makeup, I usually just avoid going out in the sun for too long especially during the hours when the sun's rays are the strongest. Im going to try and find a sunscreen that works better if possible.
    Also the sunscreen she suggest is way too expensive especially if you are supposed to a whole teaspoon I just cant spend that much. Not all of can afford high end products.
    I also have I swear the OILIEST skin in the universe, Ive tried using moisturizers and primer and the makeup is so oily and separated after an hour! I used to never use any of those steps and my makeup lasted much longer. Sounds like a lot of hype to me, unless you have less oily skin.

      If you don't need the added moisture then it's totally fine to use just the SPF, & in most cases you then won't need an additional primer; the key is that the SPF is the last step in whatever skincare you're using
      My favorite SPFs - both mineral - are Paula's Choice RESIST Wrinkle Defense SPF30 ($33 for 2oz, w/ frequent promotions/ discounts available so I've never paid more than $25 & often much less) & COTZ Face Natural Tint SPF40 ($20 for 1.5oz, & regularly available @ 15-20% off @ DermStore or on buy1, get 1 half off @ ULTA).
      Hope that helps!

    5 ml is one teaspoon of sunscreen. The recommended amount is actually 1/4 teaspoon for your face, and 1/4 teaspoon for your neck. But this amount was calculated for MEN in the top 4% of facial size. So you just had this woman slather on an unnecessarily thick mask of goop for no reason.

      @@drina4706 As face sunscreen is much more expensive than body sunscreen, and one has to be more careful with the ingredients when it comes to the face, I use 1/4 of a teaspoon of face sunscreen on the face and apply body sunscreen on the neck and decolletage. One does not have to apply the same expensive product on face, neck and cleavage. Also my dermatologist (clinical) laughed when I said that 5ml has been recommended. One needs to reapply as well, less frequently if indoors but still reapply. So imagine using the super expensive product this doctor is using in the video above! You'll need to buy one of those tubes every week!!! There are other dermatologists on YT that are far more aware of the cost of things and their advice is far more thorough than the one offered here.

      Over makeup you can use SPF powders (like ColoreScience) that don't mess with your look.

    Love the video! So informative! I always wonder if I should apply sunscreen in my eye area (lids and undereye). Consider this area is very delicate I suppose it should not be unprotected but I heard we should not apply SPF there. What you opinion on this doctor? Thanks ☺️

    • @Mel-pb5xw
      @Mel-pb5xw 7 років тому +3

      It's THE most important area to apply SPF!! It is common for many to have sensitivities to some chemical SPF ingredients in the eye area, in which case using a mineral based SPF would be the key, but you definitely should be applying it all over/ around the eye area (which I believe is specifically referenced/ mentioned in the video; if not its in her morning routine video, S I just watched both in succession). Hope this helps!

    You're incorrect and it's more confusing because you claim to be a doctor. I'm really sorry because this seems like a well intentioned video and I'm sure you have the qualifications you say you do. But I want to say you're wrong. You don't need that much sunscreen. As you say the FDA and MHRA UK recommend ~2mg/cm^2. Assuming the density of the sunscreen is at 1 kg/L (you'll find it's slightly lower in a good quality product) I don't think most people's heads are that big (to need 5 mL as you suggest). Now I've never measured the size of my face, but I have put an A4 sheet over it (also pressing on the contours of my face) and it covers not only my face but also the front of my neck (plus I've got quite a fat face, due to my fat body). A4 paper size is 21cm x 29.7cm = 623.7 cm^2 and maybe add another half of the paper (for the back of your neck) gives you ~1000 cm^2 (basically more than enough). By my calculations that's 2 mL of sunscreen required. Which matches to the quarter to a third of a teaspoon many dermatology (medical) journals have stated! Please correct me if I'm wrong.
    This wasn't written for the sake of arguing, just for the sake of those who would be put off wearing sunscreen after not only calculating costs (which varies a lot between our measurements) and effort in trying to absorb that much product into your skin.

      Purie Zeondy You are wrong: 2 mg/cm2 for the face only for a full protection (in vitro & in vivo test standards). If you want less protection, is your problem... Lab test (in vitro) were done with these standards and are replicated in vivo. That is how the SPF (FPS) is calculated.

      Guylain Bazzo What should it be then? I didn't pull 2mg/cm^2 out of thin air, I was using information provided by her to illustrate the inaccuracies. 2:46. Either way, it is an unofficial universal standard for quantifying sunscreen. And just so you know, sunscreen in academic research (where the numbers are taken from) is calibrated for the all the skin, not specific body parts like the face.

    Even on someone as pale as her, a mineral sunscreen would've left a definite white cast. Especially considering the year this video came out, cause there weren't that many good mineral options at that time. I appreciate the fact that it's trying to get people to wear sunscreen, but the application of that sunscreen wasn't necessarily honest. There's a reason why the camera stayed on the other lady instead of the model. And then there was an edit.

    Sunscreen literally makes me look like I'm too oily. It doesn't take skin types into consideration. Especially in hot climates where sweating is definitely going to be a thing. That being said, a lot of primers or moisturisers have some degree of sunscreen in them. So I honestly can't see how this will work for all people. Over here sunscreen is like R80 - R120. Which is way too expensive to waste on daily makeup. Especially if you're indoors most of the day - which most people are.

    Using this much sunscreen on face/neck everyday + reapplying midday, and if a decent face sunscreen costs around £30 and the bottle is (usually) 50ml…..
    £30 of 50ml / 5 (2.5 x 2) = 10 days = £3 a day for 10 days = £9 a day for a month (3 x £30 per month) = £3.285 a year sunscreen protection for face and neck only. CrAzY

    So if you apply a non- spf foundation over a mineral suncreen (with 5-10min in between) you are protected? I always feel that when you apply foundation over a mineral sunscreen the effect of the sunscreen is gone because mineral sunscreens works as a sunlight reflection. I hope my question makes sense and that you can answer me. And when you're out in the sun all day, in the city for example, you have to re-apply every 2 hours right?

      +Mikeyla Nunez you can't. My advice is sun avoidance if you have make-up on over sunscreen. Wear a proper hat if outdoors. If you're going to be in and out of direct sunlight, skip make-up and wear a tinted SPF that you can top up.

      You read a lot of books that make you think you are Dr Sam! Have you actually TRIED these tips? I would bet NOT. Because if you had,...you would know they DO NOT WORK. Start trying them before spouting off your information. Applying a cushion compact every 2 hours looks horrible!!!!! That takes away your blush, cakes on your MAKEUP, etc.... Dr Sam's advice rules over yours...again!!!!

    • @dianatkachenko4652
      @dianatkachenko4652 8 років тому +8

      (Jen) I did try them and please don't try to accuse me of things you clearly have no proof of. The book that I read was "The little book of skincare" by Charlotte Cho. Charlotte is an esthetician and if you look at her skin you can clearly tell that she knows what she is talking about. A wide hat won't protect your skin by itself you have to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours. Maybe you didn't read Dr.Sam's response but she did say that the best is to apply makeup with spf and reapply it throughout the day, a cushion compact is a makeup with spf.

      The good news is that for days when you're mostly indoors and are exposed to only small amounts of daylight your morning application should last all day (provided you apply it liberally and evenly to begin with and aren't sweating it off). On days where you're exposed to more direct sunlight reapplication is necessary. A great way to touch up your sunscreen throughout the day is with SPF powders like those from ColoreScience. There are also SPF mists and sprays you can look into.

    Hello, I have a question (or several questions, sorry). If i'm out for work at 9am and then go out again to eat at 2 or 3pm (being in the sun), should I wash my face again and apply sunscreen all over again? Because where I live, the sun is very very harsh and damaging, temperature rise up to 50ºC degrees (120ºF ) in summer. I wear 50SPF daily and I have combo skin (I use an avene sunscreen). I only apply it in the morning. Should I buy a light spray one(like an anthelios 50) so I can spray it on top in the middle of the day? What about my arms? does it work if I only apply sunscreen once? I hug a lot of dogs through the day, and i feel weird about re-applying cream over dirty arms. I should wash and apply, right? Also, i sweat a lot in summer. Help.
