It makes me feel so much better knowing I'm not the only one who's getting these references most of the time. For the first class of ships I'd probably suggest something like the Miranda-class Corvette (kill two birds with one stone and continue the Serenity reference with the planet Miranda as well as the Star Trek reference off of that with the Miranda light cruisers like the U.S.S. Reliant). For the fleet name though, I'd suggest something like the First Expeditionary Task Force, since it's not a fleet just yet and it really is scouting out the areas around controlled space. Keep up the great work with this series, it's really amazing so far!

The New Founded Manufacturing company "United Star" ,Lead by the Manager David Stohlmann, has made the major lead on Ship producing the Alliances Powerful Cruisers and Interstellar Carrier along with Frigates and Corvettes.
IMO, best mindset about colonising early on is to focus on expanding your borders-you can always grab the stuff that's within them later, plus you can always build mining stations and the like in them even if you don't own the planets.
Don't worry Shack, I'm lovin' all the sci-fi references. My recommendation for the first fleets name is "Home One". It may have been only one ship in the rebellion but I feel like it could work as a fleet name for the defenders of the true home world of the Alliance. Just some input from a proud citizen!

Answering the questions in order, 1st Expeditionary Fleet seems appropriate for a recon fleet, however Red Squadron has a nice ring too. Sphere of influence does effect which systems you can build stations in, so if you have any question about a system try to give a build order and you'll get an error if you can't. But you can colonize systems out of your empire so that doesn't apply here. I'd suggest colonizing the outlying planet to expand your Area of Influence then picking up Alpha Centauri next colony ship. Finally, I'd lean towards deflector technology for ship defense, and geothermal fracking so you can increase mineral output early in the game and maximize your resource collection.

The Intro is well worth the wait my friend. Though there are those that get on you for a lack of tactics during real-time play, just keep the game speed at normal and you should be fine.
System Alliance Defense Force for the first fleet name. I have always been the of the camp, Defense is the Best Offense. I try to focus on what helps my combat units survive the longest. I also try to focus on building my infrastructure as fast as possible. I just picked up this game two days ago from watching your first video on this series. Already have about 20 hours in to it and it is a really deep game! Totally loving it.
The warp drive is the slowest, but can go anywhere. The wormhole is the most challenging to do, but is also the fastest transit. The hyperspace drive is limited, but is the fastest charge and only a bit slower in transit than the wormhole.

While not a citizen I believe we should be focusing on improving our economy so that we may in turn support have the minerals required to pump ships out in times of crisis. Shack, just to let you and everyone else know, Level two station research does NOT unlock destroyers, Level three station does. and you should aim to expand your territory so I would colonize Sirius, expand those borders and get some more juicy planets under your jurisdiction.
Suggestion for our first fleet title depends on what we see the role of it as. Are they meant for flexible work? Both exploring worlds and meetings into hot zones? That name would likely be different then being a homeguard unit or primarily offensive force. I'd suggest we ask the military command what the mission of the first fleet is. My own vote in lower level command: A versatile responsive force meant to meet all needs until we can build up specialized forces. To that end, I suggest "1st Athenian" to borrow from Pallas Athena being a goddess of strategy, warfare, and also peace time crafts.

While not a citizen I believe we should be focusing on improving our economy so that we may in turn support have the minerals required to pump ships out in times of crisis. Hey Shack, you could name the ship classes after significant events, planets, and leaders/scientists. So, whomever is the first fleet leader, could have the corvettes named after them, or they could be Shack-Class Corvettes.

Shack, just to let you and everyone else know, Level two station research does NOT unlock destroyers, Level three station does. and you should aim to expand your territory so I would colonize Sirius, expand those borders and get some more juicy planets under your jurisdiction.

Name the Fleet Columbia, after the first space shuttle to orbit the planet
Suggestion for our first fleet title depends on what we see the role of it as. Are they meant for flexible work? Both exploring worlds and meetings into hot zones? That name would likely be different then being a homeguard unit or primarily offensive force. I'd suggest we ask the military command what the mission of the first fleet is. My own vote in lower level command:
A versatile responsive force meant to meet all needs until we can build up specialized forces. To that end, I suggest "1st Athenian" to borrow from Pallas Athena being a goddess of strategy, warfare, and also peace time crafts.
