One of my favourite moments is when Quick Ben and Kalam encounter the corpses of the hounds of darkness and Quick is goes 'ah yes a Deragoth' and Kalam exasperatedly asks him if he knows everything 😂
@@thefantasynuttwork My fault entirely for having the audacity not to live in a convenient time zone. It was a great conversation and I am only sorry that I missed it live.
Amazing discussion. The thing about Karsa punishing Bidithal, i think, is that Karsa is not acting on some notion of universal morality, but is doing that because Bidithal hurt Felisin Younger specifically. I didn't get the idea his reaction would be the same if it was any of the other girls. His changed character begins to show when he throws the Unfound into the sea. It is after justice has been served that his notion of justice is characterized by his understanding of his enemy, translating that compassion to mercy, the granting of oblivion. At least that's the way i see it.
Not gonna lie, finishing each book and having all these chats to listen to is quickly becoming about half the fun of reading this series. Top quality internet content as always gents. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say, thank you. C
This chat was amazing! I had to leave early last night but went back and watched what I missed. I am so impressed with your thoughts and reflections on the series so far, Jimmy! Philip was so right on about this hurting not only the brain but the heart as well. I am so excited Steve will be joining you in two weeks, and I am thrilled to chat with you tomorrow evening!
Thanks Johanna! This book was really good and it was fun to talk about all these impactful moments. I also learned a lot hahah, tomorrow will be a blast!
Haven’t been here since Deadhouse gates. Watched Your moi review and now I’m here for this. These long discussions are enticing! Also Ganoes Paran blessing the Bridgeburners also helps them ascend.
Fantastic discussion! I wish I made it out live cause I love HoC. Super excited to hear Erikson will be on CWN! I love listening to your conversations in general, so it should be a stellar time with the man himself. --HoC spoilers below-- Tavore & Felisin, man… The last chapter of HoC is some of Erikson’s best in my opinion, Felisin being one of his absolute best characters. Contrasted with the bombastic endings of DG and MoI, the quiet that follows Felisin’s death is profoundly deafening. It hit me harder than anything before or since personally. The absence of catharsis in the immediate aftermath is so powerful. Especially in Tavore’s subtle yet tragic, lonely, sorrowful portrayal through Lostara’s eyes: “Impassive, watching the seas rise, one hand on the hilt of her sword.” ‘Oh, why does looking at you break my heart?’
My thoughts exactly on Felisin. I really wanted a happy ending for her, it was so heart-breaking the way she died and never got a chance to fix things with her sister
Just found your channel Jimmy and I’m loving the content. You seem to be able to strike this balance between being intelligent and comical/chilled out. Really great stuff
Karsa knocking out Icarium should have been scary af but it was actually hilarious. I mean, you have this mysterious apocalyptic character who we still don't know the full power of, and Karsa just pops alongs and bonks him out cold
First of all this is my first comment but Jimmy your videos are awesome, I've watched many! Like you I had to re-read immediately upon finising tCG and I just finished HoC (for the second time) and I didn't know about you when I first read it a few months ago, so here I am now :) I'm only 10 minutes in but I didn't see anyone correct this in the chat or the comments -- when you said you recognize the Nascent from DG you were RIGHT and Philip was being dumb lol. Gesler, Stormy, Truth, the Silanda -- all that was in the Nascent. You were spot on and shame on Philip for screwing that up lol
Just finished HoC a few days ago! Making my way through podcasts and chats and this book is so good! Karsa was a hard character to follow in the beginning but by the end you end up rooting for him. So many good plotlines and characters. Also this chat was awesome! Can’t wait to watch your discussion with Mr Erikson.
The great thing about books... is everyone pronounces the names differently! Even the different audiobook narrators. Malazan, Felisen, Heboric .. and loads of other random ones
great talk! you're vibing with all the right things, man :D and i'm really looking forward to the talk with the goat, i have a feeling it might end up becoming one of my favorite erikson interviews - you really know how to talk to people
For anyone who is not aware or didn't pick up on it, that Steve Lundin guy who keeps popping in and fancies himself the pronunciation master: that's Erikson himself 😂 Gotta love the guy for engaging with his fans!
@@thefantasynuttwork I don't know how you Malaz-tubers and podcasters handle yourselves knowing Steven Erikson is probably watching and listening. I'd be so intimidated and just shut down my whole operation lol
Hi friends, great chat about a great book. Thanks Jimmy and Dr Chase for always giving me new insights into the series I've read many times. It's funny Jimmy, since you've read a bit ahead of this book you're talking like a veteran now, very Malazan versed
1:15:00 we all mention that Onrack cheated on his wife which is ofc bad and I don't excuse it but she herself cheated on him too multiple times and with other married man so it's highly hypocritical and to me uncomprehendable why she's gone so mad over this betrayal when she did it herself
Really enjoyed this, thanks both. This was probably my least favourite book having reached the halfway point, but having a recap reminded me how many great plots were in this one. Karsa Orlong POV probably my favourite to date. Just goes to show the standard is high from Erikson!
Yeah, that's what I think, too. He mentioned having "drowned", he's Napan and Nok (or someone else) talked about how he had a mean punch, right? Haven't read any further than HoC yet, though, so no confirmations please
Can't wait to watch this chat! For other live streams, I could see afterwards the live comments as well. Do you have any idea why this one is different?
@@profesortrip thank you! Yes, I had to take a break from reading this summer, but I will finish Toll the Hounds soon and I do plan a reaction video for the last few chapters and then a chat with some fellow Malazan fans. Everyone seems to be excited for my reaction to the end of this book and at this point I am frightened ask why 😅😂
Some interesting things about the bidithal and karsa comparison: In both cases there is talk about children as victims. In both there is a conviction that they are right. With bidithal you have the perspective of the victim. With Karsa not so much. Bidithal though was allowed to do it, while Karsa took the right by force. I dont know if without repentance I would really say either of them is redeemable. Storyline and development of Karsa is still great though.
In the audiobook series some genius decided to change narrators. Bad call. This ruined the series on that platform. One of the worst narrators ever. Must have found him in the unemployment line.
Thanks everyone, these chats are the best!
