Not that this is a viable option as supposedly there is only 200 made, its a cool military contract that makes me wonder if a version would ever be available for the public from Hayes. I saw on Bikes and Beards, the engineer said he was going to come out with one. Theres a lot of people saying these are super pricey. I bought this two weeks ago for $12k off facebook marketplace, did I just get lucky? Thanks for all the support!

Yes Mike you did get lucky in some ways. If you need help with it contact Bikes and Beards as someone else said. It's also but bit tricky to work on or get parts for.
The concept as a whole is what's solid about it. Dirty civilian did a dirt bike video. I think in a first world country the idea of dismounted cavalry (horse) could make a comeback.
It’s more paperwork, but it’s not impossible to get a vin number for ex military equipment. Some areas have you have the sheriff’s department run a background check on it first and probably charge you a fee to do it, but it’s better than sitting around hoping one of them does it for you. I can’t imagine whoever got it from the auction from the military DRMO paid much.

As a US Marine, these are one of the VERY few motorcycles that I actually want.

@@rmp5s if you mean the half tank tread things then no those were German. The wla is basically a badass Harley wl. I even had to look it up to see if the US ever made any like that but no, maybe a good reason why we never did those things had to be hell to work on.

It's a novelty thing. There's a valid reason so few were made. The range is awesome and that's all it offers. The klr is extremely reliable in the standard configuration. And there are plenty of other long range options. Riding 600 miles is unrealistic. If fuel is no longer available then it's time to get a saddle. The negative comments are just a voice of reason.

Don't know if you read youtube comments but: Im a long time dirt rider and that boot fit problem is super common for tall guys and is a HUGE hinderance. You have a few options and they will make your riding WAY better.
Option 1: What I run as a size 11 or 12, Fastway EVO pegs with Hammerhead Designs shifter. Fastway pegs drop the peg and bring it back a few milimeters and the Hammerhead shifter will push the shifter as far forward as you want (you just specify distance in the order). Lower foot pegs makes a big difference with gripping the bike if you're tall. More leg to grip.
Option 2: Some guy in the Czech Republic makes fully custom foot controls called Bosley's Pegs. Its like getting your bike tailored to you. Haven't done it but heard good things.
Having you're bike fit you properly is one of the biggest game changers for riding off road. Adjusting hand and foot controls to your liking is well worth the money always. If you need to dig your foot in to shift thats a big problem but one you can throw a little money at to solve.
This bike was actually an inspiration for my current motorcycle. Took a 2nd gen KLR and painted it desert tan, kitted it up and I’m good to go 🇺🇸 Gotta recommend an extended shift lever from Tusk @Rocky Mountain ATV/MC down in Payson.
Ya that lever was made for a midget, how the hell does someone with size 13 shift that thing😂 with boots on !?!

I rode a KLR650 for years in Austin, TX. Damn thing was ugly as sin, but super tough and reliable. These diesel bikes are awesome; I want one! Great video, Mr. Glover!

I remember being stationed in Okinawa (Camp Kinser) I'd walk by the Warehouse Row, and DRMO building. There was a big junk pile of these bikes waiting to be thrown away. Back in 2001.

Hayes Diversified Technologies (HDT) M1030M1
Engine: 611cc single-cylinder indirect injection diesel engine with 30 horsepower and 33 lb-ft torque
Top speed: Approximately 90 mph (145 km/h)
Fuel consumption: 96 mpg‑US (2.5 L/100 km; 115 mpg‑imp) at 55 mph (89 km/h)
Range: 403 miles on a full tank
Gradeability: 60 percent
Water fording depth: Two feet
Equipment rack: Can hold 50 pounds
Lights: Meet military specs for "blackout lighting" and can include an infrared driving light
Other features: Waterproof, dustproof, non-reflective, and heavy duty
The M1030M1 is based on a modified Kawasaki KLR650 and uses the stock Kawasaki main cases and five-speed transmission. The engine was designed in-house and can run on JP4, JP5, JP8, standard kerosene, and diesel fuel. The M1030M1 has been used in the British National Rally and the Bonneville Speed Trials.
I use Dunlap tires on my GW. It’s long-lasting in my experience. Mine gets around 38 mpg with 151k on it. That bike is sweet and love the matte green color!!

I use my KLR to go pick up Beemer and KTM parts, when they inevitably break down.
My brothers company makes a lot of the high tech stuff for all different vehicles for special forces. This is very cool.
I've used a Honda Xl500, then Honda XR 650 L AS MY bugout cycle love it!

I think people sleep on how quickly there will be no gas in a WORL situation. John Lovell made a great video on the whole bug out concept some years back. Basically he was like, I have a family.. a wife and small kids, they are not going to “bug out” with me, so me bugging out would just be me abandoning them, instead he said he would bug in and set things up around his homestead.
Something for people to consider
Just had this conversation with another like minded friend of mine, gasoline will become ancient within 2 years along with anything and everything that runs on it. Bikes like these for the diversity of fuel options alone are worth the investment for someone planning on being a nomad type post SHTF. All the useless cars on the road you could drain their oil into your bike and keep going.

We had these at 2d Recon Bn. They moved from the gas Kawasaki 650. I never got to ride this one but rode the shit out of the gas models. We used to throw these & an IFAV (Mercedes G wagon) in a CH53 for long range Reconnaissance.
They are super loud & not as rugged as you’d like… I had to go to mechanic school; which I very much enjoyed haha. They were working on the diesel bikes back in 2002 when I went to the course.

One way to help improve the shift lever issue is to move it up a spline. That way your foot doesn't have to be at such and extreme angle. I ran into that on my KLX110 pit bike.
I have an old KLR, it's a solid bike stock.
Having a scouting vehicle that will run on old chip frier oil for 600km a tank is an irreplaceable bit of kit for any prepper. That is a solid gold investment.

ALL Diesels need a cold start / cold weather Hi-idle mode.
Saying just crank the throttle open and stand there for minutes on end untill the engine warms enough to continue to run shows you haven't experienced cold weather situations. ☆

It’s the stock shifter. It’s the first thing I replaced on my KLR. Short guy must have rode it. You need the extended shifter if you’re anything over 5’8”.

The KLR does have the same shifter issue. You have to get a tusk or ims extended shift lever for them
That's a nice show piece, and if you want to keep it running, that's what it needs to be, a show piece, there's like 5 guys that know these bikes for repairs, and even less parts available....see "bikes& beards " vids on one of these to get the real deal repair info from the guru...
For riding swap to longer folding foot pegs and find a longer bent arm shifter or make one to clear the case.
And put the stock on just for looks.
Mike, 80 dBA = 80 decibels A-Weighted. Decibels is a measure of sound intensity. A-weighting is an adjustment applied to sound measurement to reflect how a noise is perceived by the human ear. This weighting depends on the frequency and can be applied throughout the audible spectrum to quantify the natural human hearing response. The “A-Weighting” refers to the scale of frequencies. there is A, B, and C weighted categories. Let me know if you need any more info.
Modern diesel doesn't lubricate as well as it used to so i recommend running some 2 stroke oil or hotshot in your diesel

I think diesel bikes are a smart move, good for individual movement and a pack mule
With a clear tradeoffs in mind I do think it's worth considering bicycles as a potential option especially when thinking about the "why" of bugging out in the first place, even with a full tank on this motorcycle once you are out I would image it could be very difficult to refuel. While a complete collapse of oil supply lines is rare, gas pumps have gone empty and I think its worth considering as a possibility when choosing this over a bicycle or other non-petroleum mode of transport. Granted you gotta be pretty fit to go 600mi on a bicycle to equal the range of this motorcycle but for most people who live within city limits or in areas with limited elevation changes I think a haul bicycle is worth considering if speed is not a requirement, plus its a great way to stay fit when not bugging out!

Sounds like a Sherman tank, (although they weren't diesel) or your right, it does sound alot like my old 49 Ford Red Belly tractor.
Check out Hammer Head shifters, they make them for paddle foot guys.
Badass bike! You’ll probably take a low blow on me calling me a cowboy just like on Instagram regarding comms without allowing mentions, but whatever. The most immediate thing that is awesome on that bike is the gas tank. Translucent, but also opaque. I re learned the golden rule on the way to work early this morning. 100000% stupidity on my part. I’ve been riding for 35 years, raced amateur for 1.5 years, expert and Formula USA licensed for 3 years and I still made the ultimate mistake. Getting ready for overtime at work I wanted to get in/get out as early as possible and didn’t pay much attention to my boots. My lace on the left shoe came loose and got sucked into the chain. Instead of immediately pulling over I let my ego do the driving and looked at my shoe for a few seconds. Looking up I was at a concrete curb with seconds to spare and got things situated to where damage would be minimal to my bike and myself. Without question the bike will be dumped many times given it’s a dual sport, but in that manner is inexcusable. But it happens.
I saw Marines riding those at Twentynine Palms in 1989. Thought they were the coolest thing ever. Got my motorcycle license in 2007 and 8 bikes later (mostly sport bikes) I'm hoping to get a Honda Africa Twin or something like it next year. I'd love to have one of those diesel KLRs but the cost/availability has always been an issue.

I saw a bunch of these in Okinawa when I was stationed there. An engineer platoon had them. I asked why they had them, supposedly 1141's could use them to drag power cables over distance with them. Just word of mouth so who knows.

Good idea ! The Suzuki DRZ400 is still carbureted as well as the Honda CRF650; both good bikes..unsure if they are EMP proof
Probably not... They would need points ignition, not coils... Very early 70s bikes at the latest had points. Charging system would likely not survive too, hence the diesel.

I ride Kawasakis just sold my KLR300R, and yes the pegs are not spacious. I wear size 12 and changed out my pegs on my KX250.

ROKONs are EMP-proof as they've got carburetors and a back-up pull starter. Not sure about this one, but ROKONS can only do 40MPH unless you replace the engine.
