Awesome to see this. I actually worked on the design of the Barracuda system before I retired.
I also wrote most of the software running on the Q-53G subsurface unit (green circuit board visible at 8:23).
Brings back lots of memories.
That is really neat. It must be like watching your kid take their first steps seeing the system up and running! I think this system is gonna save many lives thank you for your hard work 👍
@@evanshumard4986 Yeah, I got that feeling years ago when I saw one of my designs hanging on a wall in a store. Really cool feeling. Don't often get to see your designs in action when working for a military contractor.
So the Barracuda USV is a single-use disposable unit? Seems like it would be more cost-effective to give it a shaped charge to attach to the mine and make the USV recoverable.
Mine go boom. USV no recover.
That might be more difficult to accomplish. Attaching a shaped charge to a sea mine. Often covered in filth and barnacles and moving and sensitive to magnetic field accostical disturbance possible a self destruct or a movable modern mine, etc I would think that when it comes to warfare and the USN… cost is a consideration but it’s probably not one of the major drivers. It’s gotta work every time no matter what. It’s like a plumber buying a pipe wrench. It (a high quality tool) might be triple the price of a lesser tool… but what you get for that increased price for the plumber/pipefitter is well worth paying it to be able to do the job well and make money from the trade. In the NAVY it’s your life that suffers if equipment doesn’t work.
1-2 ton boom= no USV
Depending on the mine that may not neutralize it
@@ethanwinchester4585 fine….thermonuclear boom..
James is the man, great spokesman for the company.
Excellent presentation and information. Thank you to everyone involved.
Bravo to Raytheon for submitting the technical data package on the Barricuda mine-hunting system! However, the first Critical Design Review (CDR) in 2018 and Initial Operating Capability ( IOC) won’t be until 2028 - ten years! In comparison, the world’s first nuclear vessel (USS Nautilus) was authorized in 1951 and the ship was delivered to the Navy in 1955 - less than half of the time it will take for Barracuda to reach IOC. In 1957, USS Nautilus traveled to the North Pole - six years after authorization.
In accurate comparison
@@gotanon9659 Why?
how is that a good comparison
there was no safety regulations in 1955 they could drop it right in the water without anyone saying a thing
not like that today is it so the 10 years is justified
Major problem with design and production, the original team that designed and made the original product and prototypes will be long gone by the time the end production team begins producing the final model
It all depends on how bad the Navy wants it and how much they are willing to spend for it. High tech mine neutralization has historically not been a big priority for them. Also, This is not a Navy spec contract. Sparton and Raytheon developed this system using their internal R&D money, then proposed it to the Navy. FYI, internal R&D money is in short supply.
Naval Group !!! 💪 🇨🇵 👍
It costs how much to kill 1 bomb?
it costs how much when a bomb blows your submarine up?
A lot less than mine sweeping with humans and a big ship.
lotta War Pigs in this video
Looks very cumbersome, particularly with the unmanned unit and the Barracuda unit, all reliant on Comms....is this workable for a combat zone in the hostile waters of the north Atlantic ? Could the Barracuda use shaped charges next to the mines ?
The comms are all very low range compared to any enemy jammer. Also, how far is an enemy willing to go to protect a marine mine asset?
This is in my oppinion the fist mindful comment especially when digital warfare is more present than ever. With a deployment time of roughly 10 years the development of an effectiv countermeasure in half the time is far more likely
So after about 30seconds on Google ibe become sort of an expert on this subject and can say with some degree of certainty that if the shell of said mines were 3/8inch thick metal mirrors they could avoid detection... But your probably going to go through window cleaner like crazy...
Speaking of drones, what ever happened to the Switchblade 300 and 600 drones? They seemed to be promising when first announced for use in Ukraine.
But virtually zero has been mentioned about them in well over a year.
because what ukraine is doing right now is cheaper
normal FPV drones with RPG warheads attached do the exact same thing for waaaaay cheaper since they aren’t produced by good old US mic
They are redeveloping and making them more similar to Lancets
@@FarmerDrew The larger Switchblade 600 already seemed pretty similar in range and payload.
Do you know the shortcoming of it or in what way are they making them more similar?
One assertion I've heard was that the Russian jamming system was pretty effective. But Russia does not have enough of them to cover most of the front.

Thank you for keeping the world safe! I never thought it would be needed so badly but here we are.
Ironic.
Who do you think made the need?
Can't have a supply without making a demand first.
@@Atmatan_Kabbaher Who created the need? That's easy, over 500 years of Russian colonialism and genocide that's still going on today. But we'll fix that.
OHMYGOD LOOK HOW ROTUND HE IS.

Raytheon might wanna change the name since SAAB already have been using Barracuda for its special camo system since the 90's.
SAAB needs to change its name.

Isn't the LCS dead...?
We still have obligations to build the ones we contracted, so no, not dead, but being repurposed since their original role is out of the question
It can be used on any ship that can deploy a RHIB boat. The Navy has lots of those.
Wondering with the advancement of Hypersonic missiles and their difficulties to shoot down when we will see greater investment in underwater/submarine warfare. I believe countries should look at advancing submarine defenses because they might be harder to hit than an aircraft carrier. Hypersonics aren’t traveling that speed in to the depths of the oceans. Underwater tech might make a massive difference in any future large scale conflicts.
The patriot system's unclassified stats say if it detects a mach 5 object at the edge of its range, it has 20 seconds to react and intercept that threat before impact. That's a *lifetime* in the world of air defense. As long as we have patriot, even terminal hypersonics won't be a threat for a while.
Hypersonics are not maneuverable. They can be dealt with existing platforms.
Submarines are for a polar opposite use case
@@callsignapollo_ just imagine the defense systems we don’t know about!
@@honkhonk8009 didn’t know we had systems that are so effective!

Eisenhower warned the world about the rise of the military industrial complex and here we are.
Have you noticed that other countries are also having their own MIC's? And if you compare bu GDP, NATO does not spend all that much into defense.
This is a good product by raytheon. What are you yapping about
I live near Raytheon, and every 30 minutes starting at 10pm(+/-3to5min) they belt out a PA announcement in their parking lot over loud speaker, and oh boy its annoying. Not sure what it says, blah blah blah dont climb our fences, but its so predictable i cant believe the laziness. They need someone with a little more pazazz and motivation in their security. Raytheon...turn that shit down, my kids are trying to sleep.
Overall not a good design.
Needs either an additional boat or aircraft to deploy!
Plus it’s single use one way drone!
It would be better to use a larger drone that can be deployed using a torpedo launcher.
So it can be used by other ships or submarines.
The larger size should increase range and duration with addition batteries for example.
It should of had multiple projectiles to fire at multiple minutes.
Like an underwater rocket pod 😉
Yeah but who thinks of the narwhals?! All those specially trained narwhals are going to be out of work now because of this. Takes years to learn another job.
Great for destroying pipelines.
LOL
But only the truly naughty ones.
I mean… in fairness that seems like a solved problem at this point.
What an absolutely over complicated way to trigger a sea mine
Lets see your design.
Not really. You have a ship, you have a sensor dragging along to look for it, and then you have a munition to trigger it.
All done unmanned. This is the sea where talking about. You cant use radio waves very well in the sea. You have to make certain stuff as autonomous as possible.
lots of verbiage, no details of how.
They have already explained it. But its clearly beyond your comprehension
I mean… it’s also a sales pitch not a tech demo, but seemed pretty clear to me given a little bit of program background info.
You don't have the clearance....
Not at all cost effective or just plain dumb
Effective to stop china from taking more of the pacific.
Screw off CCP
Not cost effective vs what? Build more mine hunters? More sailors? More/longer SF recon missions?
meh.......
This seems an over engineered and over expensive system to clear sea mines. keep feeding the military industrial complex.
I think such a drone should be almost as large as a torpedo.
It will certainly has a very long flight time and be able to do many different jobs because of its size.
It will be launched from a torpedo tube.
It should NOT be a toy.
Torpedos are already like that in the modern day.
These "toys" are meant to be a cheaper option to launching an expensive and limited torpedo at a mine.
The reason we still use battleships in the modern day is because their cheap.
The reason we use artillery over Jdam's, is cus their cheap.
You want cheap to produce stuff. Economies and logistics win wars.
