  • Number 3 in my Deep Cuts series, here’s “Matter of Minutes”, (music by John Leventhal and lyrics by me), from the album, "Whole New You". Forgive me for looking a little gnarly - this is not a time for vanity! Scary and strange days, indeed. This is a song about not being prepared for one’s world to be rocked and the desire to flee. But I’m not going to. (March 24, 2020)

Shawn- l love that you bring me into your living room like I am your sister. My sister and I played music together for so many years. Your vulnerable honesty brings me back to viberant, earthy, powerful memories of times we had shared.
    Thank you for that!

So apropos for this time we’re all going through, when the world has changed in unexpected ways, when everyone is confused, lonely, and suffering, and we’d run away if we could, but running away isn’t a responsible or honest choice. I always loved this song, without knowing your story behind the song. It is even more meaningful now, especially for those complicated moments, like now, when conventional happy talk just won’t suffice.

    Brilliant, Shawn!
I've been a fan since 89. I even got my two sisters to love what you do.(With you, it was easy...)
We had the fortune to see/listen to you in one of the smallest venues you have ever played. (Parkteateret, Oslo, Norway.)
None of us will ever forget!
    They are still singing... ;-)
Keep playing! Keep singing! Be safe!

I remember seeing you in concert in Fresno CA during the Fresno Fair, many many years ago. The entire arena was totally vacant, like a unreal ghost town, except for a small group of people in the front rows , and me and my friend, who are big fans of your music (I was already hooked from your Steady On album).. Despite the lack of audience, you performed with the eloquent intimacy that cuts through the heart, and at times, it felt as if you were singing just to me. I had the best seat in the house. It was one of the greatest concert experiences of my entire life. Thank you Shawn...forever your fan.

The best concert I ever attended was on one hot Summer evening, upstairs in an remodeled, enclosed church balcony, where you opened for Richard Thompson. He's great! I went to see you. I thought that your guitar handler was a teenage boy, but you set up the stage, yourself, sans makeup. When you began to play, I got a clue. Wow! Such a tiny package just bursting with talent. I've seen you several times with your stellar sidemen. Most excellent shows. You solo with the D-28, unplugged, is really where it's at, though. That's a pretty, student model guitar in your hands, but it doesn't have the string tension to drive the top for dynamic response. How about an album of unpublished originals, solo guitar and voice? Brutally honest songs like the one above are commendable, but not essential to great songs, in my view. As for the selfie vids, you need some soft diffuse lighting, such as an umbrella reflecting the light off the inside towards the subject.
Clive Davis bought up all radio ad time, years in advance. There's no explicit quid pro quo, but nobody else can buy radio advertising in the big markets. Someone ought to file charges for Payola, and sue for damages. If you are Indy, you have to find small, low power stations, within broadcast range of the big city. Ads cost much less. Buy some time, and then ask the salesman if he might be willing to have the program director listen to your ad which contains a clip of your music. If he likes it, he can play your songs in drive time heavy rotation. If they want your continued business, they might deduce for themselves that it would be good for them to play your recordings. Of course the drive time DJs will want to interview you, as well.
Search: radio-locator .com (UA-cam won't let me link.)

Thank you Shawn for being YOU. ...Amazing, unrepeatable , open honest, and always sharing yourself so freely with the public, which we all know can be at times an extremely vulnerable position, ( opening us up to criticism et al.) Being a person with an extremely empathetic heart, is at times both an exuberantly rewarding and joyful position, or can give opportunity for other not so easy emotions! Thank you for being brave enough to stay out there, we all need to continue to share however we can right now in order to continue to grow and just survive the difficult changes the world at large is going through. I have not been one for much public comment these last few years, but having read your Wiki page just now ( and I guess since we are similar age) ..I also helped raise my daughter, ( names Calla, who was also born in July 1998) and went through major life changes in those next 4 or more years ( having contracted Lyme disease...) so Bravo for your resilience and continued Blessing Always to you and Cally, and you have always been one of my very favorites, ( an old Joni head too) and Whole New You is waaay wonderful, and perhaps my favorite too. Also a Big Book thumper, though not always as obedient as my higher powers would like. CIAO TIL.~ T.Vincent StG, artist +++

I love this song so much and did when I first heard it on the album that year and I appreciate you Shawn for your honesty. Your music and singing has been with me in times of loss and melancholy and in times of bliss. Your music is very important to me and I saw you the first time at 328 performance hall in Nashville around 93-94 when I was in my mid 20s. So grateful for you.

Thanks so much for posting these sincere videos, brave and wise and richly musical! what you said here was true, i don't believe the admission of the difficult and sometimes overwhelming change that happens with motherhood - and fatherhood - and our often ill-prepared existence. :) glad you and most of us find the way to be the best we can and learn and thrive. honesty is crucial.

Really appreciate the context you provide in your intro. It's tricky, because sometimes we have to resist the urge to "explain" art and just let it speak for itself. But in this case, the sharing not only lent insight into this particular song, but your work in general. I recently revisited "Sunny Came Home" while also having the lyrics up on the screen, and boy was I missing out on just how deep and dark that song goes. And now with this song, it's clear that you've been fearlessly wading into difficult moments in women's lives for quite some time.

I bought this album when I was about 20 and always loved this track. I had a kid three years ago and my partner went through exactly this (save for having to follow up a hit record).
