Ya know the kids acting really sold this well even after repeat viewings. In fact its (obviously?) really why Riker is so . . . well he falls for it at first. Everything else could be passed off or explained and eventually be figured out BUT having the kid . . now he has something to distract him. I mean it almost succeeds. Given he only had access to his "brain" vs conversation and context, its a pretty solid approximation of a possible reality. Hmmmm is it this one or the reality Section 31 made for the Doc on DS9? Man that alien had a really good plan!
Except that Riker knew Troi too well, and would have caught on immediately. By saying that the wife is dead, the kid can create any backstory he wants, and Riker wouldn't know the difference.
Did you have a clip from Galileo 7 where Spock jettisons and ignites the fuel, and scotty says about sending up a flare, and they get rescued? I've been trying to find it again, but no luck. I think I see it on TikTok now, but was it removed from YT for some reason?
