Troublemaker on amateur radio

- STORY: I was listening to these two guys in Massachusetts having a nice conversation, when all of a sudden, the guy with the southern accent comes in and starts swearing (illegal) and complaining about the guy's audio (which as you can hear, is perfectly fine), and that he's causing splattering further up the band.
After I stopped filming, other people proceeded to come in and let the protagonist know that there was nothing wrong with his audio. The protagonist's friend tuned up the band, and found the troublemaker on another frequency doing the same thing to another group of hams. Our protagonist gets the troublemaker's call sign and looks him up on the Internet, and finds that he's had several call signs, probably because he keeps ticking people off.
Don't be that kind of ham.
Be sure to read the description for the full story on this encounter.
all I can say..... is WOW..... :( hate those ppl
yeah i have heard them on the radio before they live to mess with each other
Soooooo.... your a dude right ?
tjlovesrachel Nope. She's a lady and there's lots of ladies into ham radio.
Shadow come on now ..... let’s be serious about this ... that’s deff not a lady.... and I know their are a lot of REAL women involved in ham radio
As a "young" person, it is interesting to see the evolutionary steps we took to get to the current level of internet trolling.
lmao
It's still very much present in Russia and Ukraine tho. Just look at any frequencies close to 7055 KHz LSB and you'll hear Russians and Ukrainians insulting and calling each other all kinds of slurs you didn't even know existed!
But ham operators are generally vary low hanging fruit for trolls though. Hell you could get a guy coming in with a Baofeng roger beep and that alone is enough to set off a lot of operators :P.
@@nikushim6665 Why the Baofeng beep?
@@fungo6631 cause a lot of the older hams are salty about the UV-5R's in general.
Old man doesn't have a ham; he's got a beef.
😂
"Well I appreciate your 100 watts yelling at me." Classic!
1500 watts is not a problem!
Watt shaming..... It's like watching 9 year olds skin shame on a game. 🤣
@@sz42781 I’ve known contesters to fire up 3000 watts.
@@theunconventionaldeal3879 watt shaming 🤣, its the body shaming of the hf world
hank hill got onto the radio
Alex Sirghie an old ass hank hill lol
Someone should tell that guy to go check inside his trailer.
I'm runnin' a hunnert hwatts i tell ya hwhat
“I sell HAM radios and HAM radio accessories, I’ll tellya hwut”
I’ve got a CB emergency!
I was waiting on him to say "I sell propane and propane accessories". XD
LOL! Welcome to 5 land. Stuff like this is why I haven't used SSB in many years. Nothing but a bunch of morons that think they own a frequency. Hank Hill should have his license revoked.
I am disappointed. I was waiting for him to say 'I tell ya what'.
Now that's some funny shit, right there.
Not even funny
As the voice on this video. That man constantly complained about me and it all had to do with his receiver filtering…lol
All I can say to upcoming new hams out there wanting to upgrade to general or extra is don’t let a few cruel people on 75 or 40 meters get to you. Life goes on with or without them anyways and just enjoy amateur radio as much as you can.
Kudos to my fellow MA ham for keeping his cool while standing his ground. It's a real shame but, no matter where you go or what you do, there are always people like our Southern 'friend' who will try to ruin your fun. If only there were a simple solution..........
It’s called the north end of a south bound horse! JohnBoyUtah kj7tbr
yeah I just wanted to point out that they could be from any location and still suck.
It's not just a Southern thing.
Shame people like that exist on radio but hats off to the operator for keeping his cool. Best thing is to move frequency and not give them the satisfaction of seeing he is annoying you. 2019 now so not too many amateurs around, especially in the UK. Nice video.
Let's be completely honest, audio compression/processing by it's very nature increases Intermediatory (off frequency) signal levels (splatter), propagation conditions, location/proximity and equipment can all contribute towards the problem however that doesn't mean we can/should verbally abuse other operators, the air waves belong to all and sometimes we just need to move frequency 👍
Ya u said it the airwaves belong to all so why tf does anybody need a license for free airwaves? We pay to use cell towers but nobody has to take a test for a cellphone it's ridiculous
@@w.e.s. A mobile phone is fixed to a limited range of frequencies, Amateur Radio transceivers have significantly more "mobility" within the radio spectrum and thus a greater opportunity for interference to specialised radio systems.
You can ride a bicycle on the road but you need a license for a motorised vehicle, both use the same infrastructure.
This is where audio processing compression hardware for recording studios transfered from.
Sounds just like CB radio...lol. You know, I thought ham radio operators were supposed to be of a higher caliber???
It's hard to be high caliber when a person has a small bore brain :)
@@bradenglettkd8zm69 The truly higher calibre folk spell it correctly. :)
Some have come from cb and yes some are territorial and some are just assholes. Just like dudes with souped up 4×4's. Big egos are on the ham bands too. They'll spend a 1000 bucks on a 1500 watt amp and get right next to a conversation with it. Its a human behavior thing. When you gotta big tool why not show it off. I've been happy with just 100 watts. If you can hear me I'm happy.
EmeritusE Well I mean the dude who filmed this video thinks he’s a lady, so just because someone is a Ham doesn’t mean they aren’t a delusional nutter.
@@SpeccyMan calibre isn't a word.
I don understand who the troublemaker is. They are both in the wrong. The elderly gentleman is wrong fro thinking that he owns HAM radio. The younger guy is wrong for running as much power as he wants to. The "running as much power as I want" practice and mentality is against FCC regulations. You are only allowed to run the bare minimum needed to contact who you intend to contact. If you are trying to talk to someone in your same town, then 5 watts is all you need, and you should not exceed that.
This is why I stick to CW on hf. Takes too long for people to argue, so keeps everyone polite and short.
That is a really dumb reason to stay on cw
@@VTXHobbies well, that and the efficiency of the mode over ssb and fm, less bandwidth used, usually further distances, and you literally only listen to one tone, short or long, so no having to decipher pronunciations of the alphabet by literally thousands of cultures worldwide, CW is the same for everyone. Not to mention CW only rigs have an insanely low current draw, meaning a small battery can last a very long time for portable comms, as opposed to ssb or fm, which are power hungry modes.
This dude sounds like the radio equivalent of a youtube commenter, a sad person with nothing better to do than troll other people. Hopefully his license is revoked.
As I listened on after I stopped filming the protagonist did some research on the Internet and found that he's had multiple call signs over time, meaning he's probably had his license revoked, multiple times. I believe when your license is revoked you can immediately take the test again and apply for another one.
+themaritimeman Wow, you'd think after losing it several times he'd either give up or learn to behave himself on the air.
themaritimeman you can change your license call sign at will. Its called a vanity call-sign, and It's fairly routine.
When the FCC revokes it, you cannot just go take the test again.
Sadly "trolls" existed in about the same number as they used to there is just more tools they can use and less we can do about it now.
44CT232 i have a feeling he is one of thos epeople who always blames other people for his problems and never does anything wrong
Not trying to be funny, but the other operator may need to adjust his hearing aid
If the guy is an extra class, he can use his amp if he wants to. This video is important to me because I was very much thinking about getting into radio again. If this kind of fighting is common, I don't want to get back into it.
Get back into it this is pretty rare to happen most of us are nice.
Somebody finally pushed Dr. Phil over the edge!
Cw dot dash dot 😮😅🎉come to my land of Alabama home Depot ok and tell me to get off the air again and tell me what kind of person you are like
Agree with your comment “don’t be that kind of ham”
People like that need to get off ham and go to cb
I've been on cb since the 70's then I got my ham licence on April 1st 2000 & only stayed on for two years as there was so much jamming & BS that I went back to cb.
Cb radio is a extremely funny hobby :)
You keep the arsehole and leave the cb to us pro's lol. I'm a licenced ham and never bother with it, to many band police and idiots telling people off for stupid little things instead of explaining in a decent polite manner. Ive been on the cb since the late 70s and never had any crap like I heard on amateur bands.
That is where he came from.
Just an old hack, no longer fit for conversion and past his time to hang up the mic, rather than sit around being confrontational and fighting with other stations over some bleed over to his frequency which is not his personal property, regardless how long he's been using it.
Some people just don't know when it's time to move on to another hobby and are stubborn believing everyone else is the problem.
Ham is the most boring thing ever until somebody like him comes on I hang on for days till I get somebody like that just to make me smile I encourage it bc ham is going downhill fast
Unfortunately, there are a few people who are like this. As with Ham radio there is always that person who "Owns" the bands. If he has had several call signs then it sounds like he has been in trouble with the FCC many times and possibly uses fake ID to get new licenses.
This person is why some people drop their ham tickets and never find the good things about Ham radio.
Even in the best of groups, there's always one or two jerks, who accuse everyone else of being a jerk. Sad.
Every group has a Sad Ham as some call them.
the irony of the guy who said the other guy has "crappy audio" is the one who has the actual crappy audio.
i love your advice at the end of the description, "don't be that kind of ham" great words.
Sounds like a typical evening on 75m phone, ahh the memories 😵
Yeah this is more fun than the ole 599 TU droning all day.
That boy ain't right!
ha!
He should have been yelling I SELL PROPANE AND PROPANE ACCESORIES
This is why I'm loosing interest in the hobby. I have a new antenna sitting in the spare room and no motivation to erect. Gave up on 2 meters a long time ago. HF is still fun at times but now and then I hear this sort of thing and it disappoints me so shut it down.
Even HAM radio isn't safe from flame wars!
"Ham" is not an acronym and shouldn't be in all-caps, just FYI.
@@thrash2429 Maybe he's just emphasizing the word, not making it an acronym.
ha ha ha poor Russ getting yelled at. he actually has a very good setup at his house. I've been there, it's really nicely set up.
And this is why I mostly FT8/FT4 ... hundreds of people making contact in the same space a stupid argument takes up.
I have been on this frequency since 1978. Well Sir, It sounds like it takes you a little longer to learn. Would you like some assistance on how to use your VFO because I will gladly walk you through it?
Since 72, he owns the bands submit
Ahh gotta love the old sad hams who think they own the frequency and wanna police the bands
Unbelievable this is what keeps people away from the hobby. These guys think they own the frequencies.. love it kill uhm with kindness
Unfortunately some ham operators are mentally I'll.
When you have no real worries in life you find yourself on 80 meters complaining when things don't go your way. Splattering is often used as an excuse to complain and compare them to CB ops. Ham radios often include filters that work very well for this type of situation but some refuse to use them and if they can hear you they are offended and will non stop complain.
I am listening to a you tube video so I have little control over tuning. To my experienced ear his audio is clean with a bit of a peak around 1500-2000 hz. he is lighter on bass than the fellow complaining. But that's OK. On FM they call it pre emphasis. it makes for better S/N ratio. he mentioned 3/4 scale on ALC meter. to me he's hitting it a bit hard for a local ragchew, but perfect for DX! I don't hear any distortion, but I am listening to UA-cam.
ya, the guy complaining sounds way worse.......
YT does mess up the audio a bit....however, its not that bad....especially if you turn the quality up from like 360p to 1080
This is the best part of hamb.
The greater fool is the one that sticks around to argue with the fool. You'll never talk sense into these lunatics. Just change frequencies and forge ahead. Life is too short ad there's a lot of band out there.
No offense to anyone but why do so many of these guys come out of the south? Sometimes I listen and its a whole different world. No manners, no class. Just yelling and cusising. It's sad. Note- not everyone is that way I have met some very nice southern gentlemen who where just unbelievable Hams. Just seems like 75 is that way. Oh well.
CB radio operators have so much respect and fun in N.ireland.
This video does no favours for anyone watching this considering to take up the wonderful hobby of radio communications.
Well it’s more entertaining then hi old man have your bowls moved today?
just change frequencies and leave him alone.
Nobody owns any frequency and the other guys were there first, from my understanding.
Maritimegirl states that he was starting the same trouble up and down the bands.
he sounds fine to me. his radio must be just off tune. i hear conversations like this every now and then.
You should go to 3.927.00 LSB they really get out of control there. 😆🤣
I know the guy with the southern accent!! Could recognize his voice anywhere, and of course I have talked to him on 3.830.
Just ran across this video and yes he sounds familiar. I have the same problem with a guy on 3.840 at night that plays music or he keys up and hollars " Nobody Cares" and he never gives a his call sign. Sadly there are several more like him out there! Maybe he should upgrade his radio to a newer rig with better filters and put his old 1950's rig in the closet or donate it to a museum. But like they say You can't fix stupid!
This is like watching the audio version of a Twitter conversation.
I recall hearing those lids...
In the 80's we met up on 3915 every night and usually I ran 100 watts until the hogs started rooting in, I would kick on a home brew 4-1000A in a pressurized big Bud cabinet being shoved by a 10KVA transformer and oil filled caps.
It would clear the area just either side of 3915.
Some of these guys would just drift right on top of you and in a couple of minutes would drift on by, can you imaging have to follow that person to stay in the conversation.
BTW; that amp was super clean.
Fun maker on ham radio :3
LOL he sounds like Hank Hill!
Someone should tell that guy to go check inside his trailer.
I thought that Dennis Weaver died in 2006.
It's still going on it grownup men fighting over nothing
I've Been a ham for50 yrs now, and this has been going on that long to my knowledge. then and now? the best way to combat this is to ignore them completely. and most times they will go away. and get a fix on his position, and get a call. and turn him in to the FCC. But avoidance works well. this is not indicative of all amateur's. and luckily these guys are few.
Hello I’m interested in ham radio but I want a hand held one what should I get
“That boy ain’t right”
Stop whacking off in my shed! Large Pies, Free Coffee!
"I tell you what".
The FCC specifically says that you can’t swear on frequency. Come on man...
The 1st amendment specifically says that you can.
I was WN8FKZ 1962-3. I got (novice) KB8VVX 1984-7 and rag-chewed average of 5 QSO's/day on 40 & 80. Got General ticket in 1987 es tried phone til some guys told political and dirty jokes on the 75M net. Put the mic back in the closet and vowed to stay away from phone, except for occasional 2M repeaters with my Baofengs ES Ch.19 when travelling. CW is the only reason to bother with ham radio, since the CBers took over the fone bands.

OH BOOHOO SOUNDS JUST LIKE THE CHICKEN BAND GO SPEND SOME MORE $$$ ON EQUIPMENT
This kind of crap is what is pushing me away from the hobby 😐
“I’ve been on here since ‘78”. 🙄
I have not personally experienced a person like this on the air...yet. Everyone I've spoken to has been polite, friendly and extremely helpful. There's always that one guy. I won't leave because of the old territorial farts acting possessive. My friend and I recently got into the hobby and joined a ham club. We are learning, meeting some great folks and having a good time. We know we are going to meet goofs like this and will just change frequencies and not give him any conversation. If he has no one to talk to, it defeats his purpose. It sounds like this is this guy's main purpose for being on the air.
Sheila Magnus very well said 🙂 Need to get back on my studies for my General ticket. Hams on the vhf/uhf around me are a tight nit group and pretend they ignore anyone who isn’t in the clique. Been times a station will call in, and I’ll call in and immediately ignored..... Another good ole will call in 1 min after me and original station immediately acknowledges them.... Just sad how the hobby is dying and most hams wonder why
@@TheDavidFromTexas We're working towards our general too. Good Luck with your studies. Most of the guys by us belong to ham club we joined so we got to meet everyone. Our club runs the two repeaters here. One thing I've found is that our club welcomes all and invites anyone who "stops by" on the air is acknowledged and welcomed to our monthly meetings. This is a great hobby and I wish much fun and good times in meeting people. 73s
There's always that one guy ugh
ROFL that 1 guy is a troll
Why are these old guys so territorial
It's what happens when the wife leaves you, the teeth fall out, and the little shriveled pecker doesn't work any longer.
He’s not territorial, he’s a trifling irritant. You’ll do well not to engage folks like that. It never gets better when you do and they feed on it like the bottom dwellers they are. It’s worse on the CB around major cities.
I occasionally turn up my CB in my Ranger when in major cities. Some crazy conversations, better then talk radio.
It is all they've got.
WARNING! Grumpy old men on 75 meters! lol
CB types.
Sorry that you had a real jerk there, I've had a lot of really great conversations with some really nice people on the ham bands. This Bozo is the exception to the rule.
Hams are only to use a power level (up to 1500 watts) necessary to reliably make a communication at the given moment. Don't run high wattage just because it enables you to talk anywhere/anytime. Too many hams with excessive, unnecessary use of high power are rendering too much of the band as being useless to others. Use your heads. The FCC established the amateur bands as a means of communication to be used when other means of communication are either unavailable or ineffective. Hams should use the bands within that intent being front & center, along with on-air practice sessions to hone precision, train new hams, and to test communication equipment. Don't crank up the power and just float down the frequency with dumb, repetitive nonsense conversation for 45 minutes at a time...it's not really that kind of "hobby", it's more serious stuff.
just get the old mans call sign and look up his adress and send him some ear plugs
Too many "nets" on 80 and 40...these folks think they own the bands...no CQ's or QRZ's for us "traditional" hams....just nets!
namdogtag IMO nets and contesters ruined SSB years ago. When they eliminated code, it just made it that much worse, even on the CW parts of the HF bands, due to code readers etc. I've always held the opinion that if you're going to use the CW portion of the bands, you should still have to pass the same code tests as always.
@@6h471 I certainly agree with you 100%....CW testing should still be required when getting the traditional ham license. Ham Radio today has become a CB dynasty with an overwhelming majority not knowing the code, just yak yak yak. Like you said there are even code readers for CW now being used....Just very disappointing
In other news...… Old man shakes fist and yells at windstorm! He may be past his prime:)
A guy like this is usually taken care of by local hams, at least that’s how they were handled 20 years ago. They would usually try to talk with him and explain what he is doing wrong and what laws he is violating and if he continues to do it the locals will record his activity mak detailed notes about time and location of his transmissions and turn him in to the FCC. If he continues they will take his radios and fine him as well as suspend his license.
FCC won't do anything
Fcc has never fined anyone
Truck Drivers just having a good old fashioned Rivalry between the CB and HAM .
80/75 meters? that explains it, lol. i hear alot of complaints from 80 meters but this is the worst!
Who's drifting off frequency. You Keep making adjustments.
Interesting, I could swear the one guy ID'd as K1RTX @ 2:53 ... but that isn't a valid call sign. Or am I missing something? Maybe K1RTA?
sorry but this is what happens when you loosen control { not needing to learn code } and you get everyone and their buddies becoming " hams ".
I disagree - you still have to learn all the other stuff, which includes safety and etiquette. Some of the nicest hams I've met are younger ones who didn't need to learn Morse. Also, the guy being rude in this video claims he's been on that frequency since the 70s, which means he *did* have to learn Morse.
Well he can claim anything he wants who's to know the truth. But the fact remains their are more a_ _ holes on the hf bands now than before they removed code from the exam. A great example is 7.200. Listen there for about a week and you will hear it for yourself. Fact is code made you learn something hard in order to get your ticket and therefore you appreciated that right to be called a "ham".
- so the one guy was, "stepping on" the other guy?
Just a typical "sad old ham" who thinks the is the authority on everything and "owns" the frequencies--and running people out of the hobby and making it less attractive to newcomers. And there are LOTS of those on ham radio. There is no need to argue with them; just ignore them and keep operating.
Goof balls like that just make me laugh. Cant get worked up over propane accessories. I mainly came here to say that TS-450S is a FINE looking radio. Its just gorgeous and now I want one bad.
I sure hope he's not someone's father, or husband. It would really suck to be his brother too. Know what I mean?
I love my 450S! Great radio.
Beautiful radio!
I'm a retired RF engineer and I got into ham radio years ago thinking it would be "intelligent" and I quickly realized that license or not, it's almost like CB on some bands/modes.. many don't really understand the technology, many really don't know what the hell they're talking about half the time (but usually think they do), and then if you try to enlighten them because you know technically, they don't want to hear it; they'll argue with you, and some of them love to talk, have to be right, selfish with excessive bandwidth and power, and are bad at listening, so it's just a terrible forum to be involved with if you want to have any meaningful conversation..
Everyone isn't bad, but it's a long way from lots of good operators. They are a minority at this point.
This makes no sense. It sounds like AM, but the radio says LSB. And it seems to be full duplex - they can talk over each other and hear each other.
I heard a beaut on 75 meters one evening and he was daring people to fight him. At one point he said that he was willing to die for his right to "as he f***ing pleased." Its disappointing that there are jerks out there (more now than ever) to try and ruin it for the rest of us who are legal. Not much you can do about it when the FCC has their hands full and are short staffed.
There's something in the drinking water on the 80 meter band. It's like Channel 6 on a CB
God channel 6 has some characters. Especially in Texarkana
You ain’t since 1978!! That guy belongs on CB. Who wants to talk to people like that anyway! JohnBoyUtah 😎🇺🇸🎙📡

lots of these trouble makers are cb operators, not all but most are cb ops. conditions are bad on 11 meters so they rush to the ham bands were conditions are more favorable to talk to other hillbillies that have the same interest or the same common topic. probably this are the same guys that got ran off 14.Mhz years ago by the FCC.
