Excellent playing bro. My ears favor the Dimarzio pickup(s) for the smoother, creamier tone. Duncans are a little more 'in your face'/aggressive, but the Dimarzios sound a bit more fluid, fat, and, in fact, in keeping with the 'violin-ish lead tone' for which YJM became known originally. I am surprised at this after reading in Yngwie's recent autobiography about how superior he believes that the Duncans are to the Dimarzios.
You, sir, are absolutely PHENOMENAL! I've been playing 23 years and you play like no one Ive ever seen. You shred WITH emotion! Most can do one or the other, shred or play emotionally. Bravo sir!
I'm currently thinking about which one of these sets I should get for my Strat. After listening to your demonstration, I'll probably go for the DiMarzios. The Duncans seem to have a higher output, but don't produce that glassy sound on the neck pickup, which the HS-4 does. And the round, glassy neck pickup sound is one of the things I love most about Yngwie's tone.
they seymour duncans sound amazing. your playing is soooo good man not just impressive but actually really nice I would love to hear more music from you
Dude, you could play a squire with chitty pick ups and sound FANTASTIC.....your playing is just AWSOME,,,oh yeah the pickups sounded very close to each other...but like the rest of us viewers, we were amazed at your playing...to hell with the pick ups//////......You re a TALENT.......from a 64 year old guitar hacker.....i grew up with cream,The Stones, Zepplin, The Yardbirds...The Doors The Beatles.....etc but I will never be able to play like you............I play a Fender with a Blackstar tube amp.........cheers and tku for the demo...cheers from Sydney Australia
Yes, I think that most of us need to consider volume, whether it's home recording or live. A lot of live work can be just smaller venues/clubs etc. Have you seen the Jeff beck at Ronnie Scott's gig on DVD? He gets a very unique sound and there's no Marshall stack mountains. I have always used ear plugs for live and I've still got tinitus. I guess the ribbon mic is much more responsive?
Thank you so much for sharing! I enjoyed the music and the hearing lesson with these p'ups! May have to get a set of these for my Fender Strat! Great job!
I think that the ribbon mic comes in handy when you dont want to play to loud. I think that Yngwie plays all the way as loud as he can, then you can use a SM57 and it will sound great.
The YJM's seem to have a little more articulation/bite and string sound to them whereas the Dimarzio's sound a little more compressed in comparison. I prefer the YJM's.
Mr. Pettersson..... great playing great feeling superb technique !!! Could you or anyone tell me the precise backing track on this....... thanks..... keep Rocking !!!!
On this clip, i dig the duncans more. I was surprised by this, as i do not dig yngwies tone on spellbound. I am not sure what amp he uses or what other variables there are but i don't think the pickups are my 'issue' with his sound, as i have heard several clips on youtube where the duncans sound great
same here ... i think the horrible sound in the latest Yngwie records is the producers fault , cause i've already talked with several people that say that Yngwie's tone live nowadays is still brutal , maybe better than before ...
Honestly, the tonal differences are minor enough that they could be attributed to the different guitars or string life. I find both models to be quite comparable, at least in this demo. Your playing is excellent, by the way.
Hi Morgan, I want to buy a ribbon microphone, ask you about the one you used in this video specifically, or if you have any advice. Thanks, I love your work. Greetings from Spain.
Hello!! I had a noname China ribbon and it worked great. So Im not sure what to buy. But maybe If you do some research you might find a good one. I had to have a Special preamp ro fit the resistance it needed so look out for that.
...The split mode has the highest output and produces some great bluesy tones and overdriven tones too and brings the guitar up closer to the levels of others without much amp tweaking or need for extra effects. The 3 way switches are great for versatility : ).
Very grateful that you answer ... I bought the fender stratocaster U.S.A. 25th Anniversary 1979, ..Would you mind telling me which pedals or effects you use in this video specifically?
You are more than welcome. Talent like yours needs to be shared and I am happy to do it. Thanks for replying : ). Ok so you get that awesome tone running them in series. I have hooked each pickup, in both sets, to it`s own three way ( on,on,on ) toggle so I can experiment with series, split and parallel sounds. I like the series tone but it has much less output than parallel and split...which only becomes problem when switching between other guitars with higher output pickups during live shows
Cool demo/comparison. I have the YJM Furys in my 2013 Signature model. As nice as they are......I think I'm gonna swap them out for Dimarzios. The Furys are a bit too full bodied for me plus I like vintage Yngwies tones better.......thanks for the demo

I was doubting if i could get it to use in clean-crunch type of songs coz there werent any vintage hot stack available anymore.

Had to come back and watch this video again. Love that you played over the chord progression from "Crying". Still my favorite Yngwie tune, and just an awesomely fun progression to play over. Your tone is fantastic, man. Both guitars sound great in their own right... Just a slight edge in brightness to the HS-3s... which could be good or bad, depending on what you're asking of them. To my sensibilities, you nailed the tone with either.
Excellent playing and comparison. For me the Dimarzios are the clear winner. They have that "round" smooth sweet sound that defined classic Yngwie between 1984 thru -2005..... Beautiful & tasteful playing! I love it man. IMO, the Dimarzios are more focus, slightly compressed but modern sounding, very sweet tone. The Duncans sound more organic & have more bite & a little more define. But the pick attack on the strings seems lost on the Duncans... Overall, I still prefer the HS3 & HS4.
