The regulations governing number plates state they should only be illuminated by white lights at the front and red at the back of the car, and that they shouldn't be positioned in any way that might distract other drivers. The exception to the coloured-light placement are reversing and indicator lights.
Are number plate lights a legal requirement UK?
There's currently no legal requirement around how dim or bright number plate illumination should be. The only stipulation is that the lights should be white and no other colour to mitigate problems with reading the plate accurately.

Hi, is it the same process with the 500x?
Hi just watched this after a Google search on how to replace bulbs, I have replaced both bulbs (as neither working) & new bulbs are not working. Could it be fuse or a bigger problem? Any advice gratefully received. It’s a 2017 Fiat by the way 😊
Hi, are the position lamps, and high beam or nothing at all? I would still check the fuse just to be sure that it’s nothing serious. Usually fiats do suffer with electrical problem but being 6 year old is very hard to say.

Hi the warning message should go off once the bulb is replaced. Just to be 100% check other bulbs i.e stop lamp, position lamp, reverse, fog, indicator and main dipped. Thank you 🙏🏽
If you replace the original (incandescent?) bulb with an LED bulb (which I did, because the original bulb was melting the housing), the error will not clear. The helpful people at O'Reilly's auto parts suggested that it was because the LED has a lower wattage than the original incandescent, which is why the computer is still reading it as an error. They were more helpful than the Fiat dealer who shrugged and said "I dunno." O'Reilly's suggested that I would need to change the fuse to a lower wattage to remove the error but I haven't pursued that yet. The manual does not seem to indicate a dedicated fuse for the license plate bulbs so if it's a shared fuse, replacing it with a lower watt fuse would lead to a different error.
What we have decided to do for now is just live with the little yellow error bulb and just keep checking the to make sure the plate bulbs are still illuminated by looking at them every now and then.
This was an issue for me as well I replaced the bulbs as one was out and once both worked again the warning light stayed on but I did replace with led lights
