- "He Who Would Valiant Be" is a 1906 version, by Percy Dearmer, of John Bunyan's "Who Would True Valour See" which appeared in part two of 'The Pilgrim's Progress', written in 1684.
The tune is 'Monk's Gate', which Ralph Vaughan Williams adapted from the traditional English folk song ,"Our Captain Cried All Hands," which he collected in the hamlet of Monk's Gate in West Sussex.
It is performed here by the choir of Wallingford Parish Church with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

It's 2024 and this dear hymn is more beautiful than ever !
We need this hymn desperately these days!
Yes, Ruth. 🙏
@Ruth Mangslwadi Yeah with that idiot of a president of thr U S A Ruining that country.
Oh we do!🙏
We desperately need to be more valiant!
My memory is a bit sketchy about schooldays but I think that it’s our school hymn
Our school (Tsito Methodist School) hymn in 1966-68. I learn it's still upheld in Ghana. Thank God
I also loved singing this at school, having no understanding of its depth.
Now thanks be to God Most High, I do understand....
(in part).... Also feel it could apply to John Bunyans Pilgrims Progress....
Blessings from South Africa!!!
the hymn is directly based on pilgrim's progress: the original words were lifted from it, though they were modified later to be more "church appropriate", references to hobgoblins and fiends and all.
Memories of school assemblies, I loved the tune and the lyrics even though I never really understood them.
The words are a bit archaic, aren't they? 😊
Yes, I didn't like assembly for years, then my voice broke and quite liked being there in a "suit" belting it out. Communally.
"he who so beset him round with dismal stories" beset is an archaic verb meaning assail, harass, but people who try to discourage and depress you definitely exist nowadays. I was a classics student almost half a century ago and translations from Greek and Latin used this kind of archaic language, quaint but so endearing. Once the language is understood, the message brought to us by this hymn can be seen to be very relevant to contemporary life, methinks.
@@ChetValleyChurchesAbsolutely not. They still apply today. Following Christ Jesus is not for Cissy's. Be brave, be strong for the Lord your God is with you. Even in Adversity.
Wonderful héritage. Can't thank God enough for them
Perfect. Takes me back to a time when England was beautiful.
This is/was the school hymn at Milton High School in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. It takes me on a nostalgic trip back to the 1990s 🥲
Having spent many weeks discussing Pilgrim's Progress, this hymn is all the more stirring and meaningful to me. Thank you for sharing the hymn and the lyrics.
It's our pleasure, Jack. 🙏
This is a beautiful hymn, it’s one I remember off by heart from my days as a chorister at York Minster.
Love this hymn. I can thank doctor who for this.
😊
I've always had a fondness for this hymn since school, which was Langley from 1989 to 1992. We had to go to church at Saint Michael's and All Saints if I recall, time has flown. Thank you for sharing.
The video was shot over the field just opposite the school's main gates, on the A146.
@@ChetValleyChurches where does the A146 go?
It's the road between Norwich and Beccles, part of which was known as the Loddon bypass.
Whenever I hear this hymn it takes me back to my childhood - we always seemed to be singing it in assembly at school, or at Sunday school
Happy memories, we hope, Chris. 😊🙏
I miss those days 😢
I fell in love with this hymn. Thank you. I first heard today when looking at Keeping up appearences. I immediately stopped watching the episode and listening to this wonderful sound.
Excellent. 😊
Love it, Mrs Bucket has great taste !
@@mmyabaki it was the vicar that choose it, sung by Onslow, a man that the Bucket woman wants nothing to do with except in an emergency 🙂
@DavePotts poor Onslow, never able to meet the Bucket woman's high standards with the periwinkles..🤣
My dad used to call my mum: 'Mrs Bucket" lol 😆 Great memories 😂
This reminds me of school so much. I see the beer "Hobgoblin" in the pub and this hymn goes through my head straight away. The original and best lyrics are with the hobgoblin.
😊😊
I'm just reading 'A Pilgrim's Progress ' and this hymn keeps coming to mind. I don't think I've heard it since school and I'm almost 65. I really enjoyed listening to it. Thank you.
Same! Though I'm only 60 you old codger 😂
What is pilgrim’s progress ?
@@jerry6830 It's a novel written by John Bunyan.
@@alphaandomega274 Ah yes . The novel where personifies Hope , Faith , Temptations isn’t right ? … I read it when I was 8-9 years old in my native language. It’s very powerful.. 😊
@@jerry6830 Yes it is. You can certainly liken yourself on the same path as Christian when you read it.
Touches me deeply.
Wow! This brings back beautiful memories of when we had school assemblies every morning. You had to be on time or sneak in. If you were spotted being late, your name was called out by the headmaster, and you were shamed in front of everyone. Hence, I was never late and have never been late for any appointment since. Oh, the good old days 😂
Hahaha... This makes me laugh. We had exactly the same thing at school. I was often late, sneaking in and keeping my head low. But I often got caught. My name called out by the head Master and a clip round the ear from my form teacher.
My old school doesn't hold assembly in the mornings any more. No longer do the pupils get to sing this great hymn. They don't even sing Jerusalem any more at the end of term assemblies. So very sad.
@Cailean_MacCoinnich I know, it's sad really 😔
What a well composed and we'll sung hymn. The song has already made my day.
We're so pleased. 😊
This is so beautiful.
😊🙏
This hymn speaks volumes to me
That's great to hear. 😊🙏
Glorious.....
Indeed... 😊😊
An amazing hymn of encouragement! Thanks
Our pleasure, Olayinka. 😊
Such beautiful words and melody!!
Amen. 🙏
So refreshing this rendition🙏🏾
Thank you. 😊🙏
It touches my heart
Excellent! 😊🙏
Wonderful!
My favourite hymn of all time,I have cried buckets at Prince Philip’s memorial service and I am not even a monarchist. He was a true hero for the British people.
What a brilliant arrangement! It brings to mind why this hymn was chosen for the funerals of Sir Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher! Thank
you so much!
It's our pleasure, Dulcy. 😊
never heard this before and I love it!!
Excellent. 🙏
This must have been my headmasters favorite song back in the 60's we sang it every week in an assembly. Holy Holy Holy must have been in his top 5 too. Glad you enjoyed this one, its been etched in my brain for years.
Thank you.
😊
Put in the description that this is the same rendition used in doctor who series 3 "Human Nature". Many whovians will have heard this beautiful hymn in the episode and decided to seek it out.
I heard this song on an episode of Foyle's War. I love it. Thank you for posting this lovely version with such pretty scenery.
Our pleasure. We like to show pictures of our part of the world when we can. 😊
It was also used in an episode of Doctor Who.
Lovely
Amen. 🙏
Takes me back to school. Colonial South Africa. And if they don't like it, they know where to put it...
Always loved this hymn - have to admit I do love the Hobgoblin version lol
Beautiful
😊
A great song; encourages christian pilgrims.

This hymn goes well with the following passages of Scripture: Luke 4:1-13, Deuteronomy 26:5-10, Psalm 91, Romans 10:8b-13.
Love this song
That's great, Juliana. 🙏

A nation which turns from the Lord who gave them a good land will will be destroyed by the Lord. Deuteronomy 8, Leviticus 26, Deuteronomy 28.
A sombre warning, Paul. Let's pray that people heed it. 🙏🏻
Amen 👏 ❤❤❤
This was in an episode of Keeping Up Appearances!
😊
And in an episode of the Bodyline cricket series, where the English Ashes tourists sang this hymn on board the ship bound for Australia. They formed a choir, which one of the players conducted. I remember watching the programme!
Used to be our school song
That's interesting, Ian. 😃
I went to school at Elstow Abbey
A rather checkered past, we see. 😃
Would love to use this beautiful arrangement of my Mother's favourite hymn at her funeral service on the 29th July but cannot find it on the Co-op Obitus website. Can we use it and if so how please?
We're really sorry to hear about your mother's death and offer prayers for you and all your family. We hope the funeral is a good opportunity to say farewell.
This version of 'He Who Would Valient Be' is performed by the choir of Wallingford Parish Church with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. We downloaded it from the iTunes store. It is also available on Amazon. 🙏
I came from keeping up appearance daisy toy boy episode ending
I would like to use this video in our online service for the TDSS Methodist Circuit, with your permission please.
As we said, we are really pleased when someone uses one of our hymn and song videos in worship. Please note, though, that a suitable copyright licence such as CCLI would be a good idea. Blessings for your circuit service. 🙏
ELYSIAN!
Please du, if u can, O jesus I hav promist (hatherup castle)!
Took a few thrashings on this one.
Whose arrangement? And I looked to try to buy this CD - no matter where I looked, it's over $200 US dollars!
Hi Dorothy, as we put in the '...more' section, this performance is by Wallingford Parish Church Choir, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Adam Langston & Dr Sue Ledger. It can be found on the iTunes store.
@@ChetValleyChurches Thank you. I must be one of the only people left who use CD's, and/but I am grateful for iTunes and the single.
The unusual orchestral arrangement still intrigues me-while standing on its own, it never overwhelms the chorus. I am so grateful to have found this brilliant performance. Thank you again.
Our pleasure, Dorothy. 😊
Good morning NO SOUND
We're sorry to hear that. However, we have checked the version we've uploaded and we can hear the sound track quite clearly. We wonder if it may be to do with your device settings?
Should be Plymouth Argyle's anthem in my opinion
I am a janner also
😊
Some of these verses could have come from Lord of the Rings.
Really? It was actually written by John Bunyan, who wrote 'Pilgrim's Progress' 😊
Frodo's journey to Mordor and back was definitely a pilgrimage of sorts.
When I heard about France's 'backpack hero', Henri d'Anselm, I immediately thought of this hymn.
😊
