Thank you so very much for sharing this insight, this exact part of pilgrims progress has been on my heart lately. This is the scripture that came to me as I was listening to this hymn Matthew 24:13 “But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”
I prefer the hobgoblins original version. Percy Dearmer tried to make it less intimidating but if the truth be told, we need to face up to the goblins. Bless you both for this excellent ministry.
Thanks Gregory, I'm not super familiar with the history of this hymn not who the hobgoblins are? Are you able to send me a link of their version for me to have a listen?
I have given a link to a potted history of the hymn. Here are the original words in modern type: Who would true valour see, Let him come hither; One here will constant be, Come wind, come weather There's no discouragement Shall make him once relent His first avowed intent To be a pilgrim. Whoso beset him round With dismal stories, Do but themselves confound; His strength the more is. No lion can him fright, He'll with a giant fight, But he will have a right To be a pilgrim. Hobgoblin, nor foul fiend, Can daunt his spirit; He knows he at the end Shall life inherit. Then fancies fly away, He'll fear not what men say, He'll labour night and day To be a pilgrim.
Before editing, this video together I was actually reading "Little Pilgrim's Progress" (Written by Helen L. Taylor) to the kids, and got up to the part. (SPOILER ALERT!!!) Where the little pilgrim "Faithful" Is killed by the people at Vanity Fair. And the beauty of His testimony to the truth in the midst of those who reviled him, brought tears to my eyes, even though it's a kids version. In all honesty, I pray I'd have the courage to stand up like that. I fear I do not. But should the time come when any of us is bruised or beaten or ridiculed, or even killed, may we be so full of the spirit, that we'll boldly proclaim the truth in love so that those who hate God, may come to repent and trust in Christ and so that God May be Glorified. I love the story of Pilgrim's Progress! And I had no idea John Bunyan wrote a hymn. This is a beautiful, encouraging song. Thank you for performing and sharing it. 💙 My daily Bible reading has me today in the Olivet Discourse in Mark. It's a frightening read, considering the betrayal by family members and loved ones. But Jesus says he who endures to the end will be saved! Like the story of Faithful and Christian, I hope to stay on the Narrow Path until I reach the Golden Shore. 🙏🏻
Yes, this is the same passage "Mary" another commenter mentioned in regards to this song. (Although from Mathews account). And I think the power and capacity to endure to the end will only come through Christ as he shepherds us and we depend on Him for His enabling. Perhaps it could be said that the battle to endure to the end, is that of the battle of trusting Him. For all we need, come hell or high water. (as the saying goes) Surely our confidence to reach the Golden Shore, is found in knowing our need of His righteousness, and our utter utter dependence on Jesus.
@@AHymnForToday Yes! He gives us strength to the uttermost! But it is still a storm to be endured. I think of when Jesus offended his followers and most people left him. When he asked his 12 if they would leave too Peter said (paraphrasing) "Where else would we go? You alone have the words of life." No matter how hard things are or how painful the trial is, the alternative to enduring is intolerable. We follow Him in His steps of suffering.
Well done fellow pilgrims, it's wonderful to have a hymn along the way. God bless you.
Thanks Nathan! Bless ya Mate!
Lovely rendition May you continue to sing praises to our Jesus 💕
Thank you Suzanne. God willing, we will!
Wonderful, God made you both to harmonize so well!❤
Thankyou Moira, It's good to have Merran with me in it, she's a goodun!

Mary, the same passage (except from Mark) is where my heart turned when hearing this song. May we be strengthened to endure! 🙏🏻

@@penarlag1 Thanks so much! I like how this version sets it up in a way as a more grounded narrative with the specific foes.
I prefer hobgoblins and lions that fright as well ❤❤
Most moving folk music rendition of this inspiring hymn, so uplifting during these most troubling times. God Bless, and thank you.
Bless you Lester, thank you so much for your encouragement, and I'm glad our rendition is a blessing!
