I have been doing my own tires for decades. I use 3 tire irons which makes it so much easier. Tip, I keep one tire iron in place using the inside of my knee while I switch with the other 2. I can change a tire once the wheel is off the bike in less than 10 minutes.
Awesome I am sure the more I do it the faster I will get at it thanks for the tips will give it a try.
This is something I have to learn myself. Since I am going to be doing some Adventure riding tire repair in the field is a real possibility.
I have used balance beads before. They seemed to work well on my 2007 Goldwing.
Yes you do learn to do it in the middle of nowhere.
At 69 years old I’ve been changing my own tires since I was 15. Now with my 2016 FatBoy using super hard low profile tires and being older it’s just become really hard. I went ahead and splurged on a Rabaconda street bike tire changer. Should have bought one years ago. It’s easy and only takes about 10 minutes to remove and mount a tire. I own three motorcycles and ride daily so it was much needed.
I have been looking at that setup myself, saw a demo in Sturgis this year pretty slick set up
Just bought a 96 fatboy, love the bike. Needs a rear tire. Thanks for putting this video up with the tool list. I dont trust shops either where I luve so it will be nice to be able to change the tires my self. Subscribed ^
Glad it helped thanks for the sub
you really done well first time doing it that fast and no more better feeling than doing it yourself
Did my third one this weekend took me about 20 minutes
@@TheBadgers you get faster I use do them brought my first Harley may start again
There is usually an inset “lip” in the center of the rim…. If you set the tire bead in that lip the rest goes on really easy. It takes a bit of practice but you can definitely change them quicker and easier the more you do it!!!
Like anything practice makes perfect. Thank for watching!!
Great video! I just bought the same bead breaker tire changer. About to do my tires. But, I also bought balancing stand and going to use weights.
Awesome good luck
Instead of the nice wheel holder, I just use a 5-gallon bucket with a strip of pipe insulation around the rim. Pipe insulation is pre-split and has some adhesive to hold it in place. For a bead breaker, I use a c-clamp. My tire irons are about 2/3 the size of yours. I need to take a smaller bite when mounting/dismounting the tire. Finally, I use balance weights and a static balance instead of the beads. I guess I'm just old school. I was a grey-beard about 20 years ago, now I guess I'm Marvin the White? (Lame Lord of the Rings joke.)
I have always used weights on all my vehicles, wanted to give the balance beads a try will let you know how they work. The 5 Gallon bucket is a great idea.
Cool, good job Sonny
Thanks bud
Great video!! See all these sport bike tires being changed, not worried about that but my Harley UC& Intruder 1500LC (200mm) are gonna be a different story!! Nice to see it can be done with that inexpensive setup.
Good video and all I would add is you can make it easier for yourself if you remove the rotor and pulley, I've changed my Harley tyres for years by hand, don't give up it gets easier the more you do !!
If the pool noodle doesn't work then I would try something like Automotive heater hose. Just split it down the side and wrap it.
Yepper that was on the short list of options Thanks for watching
On my shaft drive by the local shop charge of 25 bucks to change a tire if I bring in the wheel of course I remember when you bought a tire from a shop if you brought in the wheel they mount it for free but that was the good old days.
Yep the good ole days are gone for sure, thanks for watching!!
Changed my dirt bike /dual sport bike tires my whole life,I’m doing my own Harley tires…lol…get er done…
Good luck
Men!! Awesome video!! First time I see your channel, I’ll start following you!!
I have a 2004 Dyna WG with a tire the same size of yours, I was struggling to take it out and finally decided to go to a garage with a machine…
Actually I never saw a manual tire stand and bead breaker! And I tell you what, I do a lot of stuff at home, like welding and build some tools; I will build one and also a balancing bed!!
I live in Azores, sometimes it´s better to invent than to buy and wait for it to get here!!
One thing, did you try already this other tool to remove the tire, the one you which you had?? I was thinking about those ones but I’m afraid that they could be small and week… it needs a lot of pressure to take that tire of…
Thank you so much for your time and help!!
All the tools I used are linked in the video, takes a little practice.
I am in the same shape as you with my closest HD dealership an hr away. I would take the wheel and new tire only to dealership to cut down on labor. I have never really got the concept of the balancing beads. Let us know how it is working. Thank you for the info.
We are headed to Sturgis in just a couple of weeks should give us a real good test of the balance beads will let you know
Grind handles smooth ,
Good Idea
Well, it is cool how you are able to change your own tires and enhance the balance. I wish I could do the same but when I get down low to wrestle the tire I usually only succeeded to rip the bottom out of my pants somehow!!!😳
Did you have any issue seating the bead when you inflated the new tire? I was never able to do it successfully on my Sportster rear, too stiff. The shop used a Cheetah inflator
Never an issue super simple
Anyone ever swapped out the rear 240 wheel with a 200 wheel? Can spacers be used or is there a whole kit needed?
Where did u buy the tire changer!
links to all the tools I used are in the description of this video here is the tire changer amzn.to/3amPJvZ
What size rear tire you running on your 06 fatboy ?
its a 2005 150 80 16
My buddy just changed his front and rear tires in my garage a week ago with only 3 tire spoons 🥄 that we use to change dirt bike tires. Also they were spoked wheels I was impressed lol
That is impressive, you. don't need all these tools just makes it a little easier
I really want to know more about these balance beads
Think about it. How does the beads know to go to the lightest part of the tire? They are going to spin equally inside the tire. It's just a gimmick.
I will let you know we head to Sturgis in the next couple of weeks we will be able to give them a good test.
Have you tried them? I would love to know your experience with them or was your comment just a theory you have with zero real world experience?
@@TheBadgers I've tried every new wave gimmick that has come out in the last 50 years. I put them in and then put it on a spin balancer. It needed weight just like it had nothing at all.
@@WindRider1 well that makes sense, basically every time you go for a ride you are rebalancing your tire, a spin balancer doesn't run long enough to let the beads balance the tire. I will rest them out and let you know.
How did you put the balancing beads in?
Poured them in the tire before finishing mounting the tire
i change my own tires all the time ADVICE get a saw and cut the DAMN tire once the bead if off
Yeah everything is a learning curve for sure. I built a tire machine out of an old basketball goal. I gravity balance with stick on weights. This was my tire changers maiden voyage haha. ua-cam.com/video/Dv5xXzMohk0/v-deo.html
😎👍
Dude….thanks for the video…I love doing shit myself…save the cash…
Agreed then I know it was done right
