Lolyd Khan's name didn't register with me until he pulled out his Whole Earth Catalog. He has had a illustrious life and was a leading spirit to the back to the land movement. Its always a keen pleasure to be in the presence of these special people Kirsten, thanks.
A friend gave me a copy of the Whole Earth Catalogue many years ago while I was in New Zealand, unfortunately when I left , the Catalogue remained there.
My cousins in Ontario Canada still have an early copy of Whole Earth because….they’re in it! They built a geodesic dome on their property and lived in it. Early to mid 70s. Still on their land❤
Lloyd is a legend! In 1989 I built a house in Freestone on 5 1/2 acres with my ex husband. We paid $159,000.00 for the land. We lived on the property in a 27’ travel trailer. It took us 4 years to build a 2,800 square foot house. Like Lloyd, we learned as we went along. A neighbor that was also an owner/builder was a contractor. He helped us frame for 3 weeks. There were 5 owner builders on our hill. I learned so much - it was one of the best experiences of my 70 years. Great interview with Lloyd. Good to see he’s still kicking around. ❤

Thank you! Lloyd is a hero to me. His D.I.Y. philosophy has been a huge influence on my life. My Dad had a copy of the Whole Earth Catalog when I was a kid. My real interdiction to him was getting the Home Work book as a wedding gift. The fact that he’s still skating at 89 is awesome. Till the wheels fall off. Pure inspiration.
Dear Kirsten and team , I just needed to express my gratitude for this wonderful channel, been with you fit for years now.... you just find the most outstanding places and their people. Great editing and style , congratulations 🙏
I used Lloyd's books to build my first home in the early 70's. I had lived in a dome in Alaska and realized that they weren't for me. "Shelter" really was simple and straight forward and doable. It was a very good journey. Thanks, Lloyd.
Lloyd’s Shelter book motivated me to buy a run down house in Baltimore. It was the only way I could afford to have a house for me, my wife, and new son. I learned so much fixing the house and still own it (as a rental) 20 years later! This eventually jump started my career as a handyman and I’m very happy I went down this road 😊
Such an influence on me... his life speaks to the inner kid that desires a fort, fortress, adventure at nearly every turn. I have a few of his books, and late at night they set me off to dream world, itching to build my next "thing". And to be that vigorous at 89! Yeah baby- go Lloyd!! Thank you for the years of inspiration :)
Lloyd is a gem of a human. Great to see him going so strong physically and mentally! I was born in Mill Valley and used to cut class and hike 7 miles out to Stinson Beach near Bolinas during the day then take the bus home in the evening. Such a magical place. We recently bought a run down cabin in the Santa Cruz mountains. The house is a wreck but the utilities are all good including the well and septic. We're in the process of getting the whole place fixed up so we can move there next year. I turned 38 yesterday and hearing all this advice from Lloyd is giving me goosebumps!
Lloyd is a great example of “the right way to live your Life”… he is fully engaged with life. Still curious, still active in every way. He is teaching Life via his actions day by day. Beautiful Video & Oral History 👏
Oh my, oh my.... Lloyd to say how much I appreciate you, your body of work and your approach to lifestyle would be a mere understatement. Over four decades ago, I experienced a whole lotta life, tremendous inspiration, love and joy at Pacfic High. Countless sweet dreams, as a symphony of rainfall and the melodious wood fire delighted my heart and spirit while cozied up in the loft of your geodesic dome on that sacred land in the Oaks...... Any who dwelled there or visited, were gifted a very precious gift of place, an experience and time, along with an essence of beauty that carried on influencing the decades to follow. My time on the land was post Pacific High School days, but the intentions, curiosities, creativity, freedom and joy of design/building and my appreciation for conscious habits and lifestyles most certainly carry on. We will be able to start digging a hole in the ground in the next few weeks - the costs & time involved are mind boggling today.
What a fascinating man. His mindset is spot on. Keeping busy and staying curious. I liked when he said, 'the way to get to started is to just start'. He made references about his wife a few times and it made me sad for him. It's gotta be hard being alone in that big compound. But he is inspirational.
It was sad when they showed her and he talked in past tense, but then it's even more sad that the place doesn't have kids there, so it feels like once he goes the whole place goes.

My grandma told me one time about her uncle who would walk around on his hands to show off. Funny how athletics in the family don't always get much attention.
I remember seeing Lloyd in Mother Earth news years back in his 70’s , so great to see he is skateboarding still, and surfing ect. He has a lot of techniques and activities to slow the aging decline and show what is possible. Stretching yoga and skating are all great things to fit in the routine. I’m close to 68 this just adds fuel to the fire to keep going and not back down. Longboarding skateboarding and growing my own food Anand saving rare seeds are things I relate to in this video. Needed to see this, we need reminders sometimes to stay on track and not fall into the traps of sedentary living.

Thankyou Kirsten for all you do🙏Lloyd was and still is a wonderful teacher to so many of us, his books guided so many of us in the 70’s back to the land movement and developing our skills through trial and error. We knew that if it was to be it was up to us to do it, recycle, reuse, live and learn, be curious and do the best we knew how, fix our mistakes and grow up with new skills. Lloyd is a blessing for so many of us that walked that path, his work with Stuart Brand and the Whole Earth catalog became a library of information for us all on our journey, thank you so much for sharing his life with us all, I love your work very much!🙏💫
Great tip on if you want to start something, just start doing. That's how I got started too. Wanted chickens but didn't want to spend $1000 at TSC on a small crappy coop. So I bought a drill and built something. Twelve years later I'm building my own house
What a wonderful interview, Kirsten - I´d have loved it to be much longer! Lloyd is a legend and just as inspiring as his books are. And I absolutely love that kitchen, nails and all! 😀
Mr. Kahn knows how to live life to the fullest. He is so smart or maybe brilliant, wise, and self taught. He is amazing, just absolutely amazing. I want more people like him around. He has so many abilities. Builder, artist, architect, photographer, writer, and a perpetual student on a quest for knowledge. Did you notice all of his books? But he is more than what he's made or done. He sure doesn't look his age. I would love to meet this wonderful man and spend the day with him. Thank you so much, Kristen for introducing him to us.😊. Impressive!
WOW, thanks so much for bringing this inspiring man once again to the world! PLEASE go back and capture demonstrations of skills that are "under threat of extinction"!!!
THIS IS what a FREE mind looks like. Llyod is an individual. He is walking to his own drum beat. He IS a LEADER not a follower. This is the type of people that were around in the 1970's. Back then people could survive anything. Now-a-days very few could survive without the govt's help. Sadly, with so much social media people have become nothing but, followers & copy cats who dont use their OWN mind to create a path for themselves. KEEP ROCKIN on Lloyd you have figured out life!! BRAVO!!
This guy is awesome ! His attitude and physical ability gives me hope and energy. Now I want to get up every morning and get going to do more than sitting around waiting to die ! Thank you for this video ! You are helping so many of us old timers to a better healthier and longer life. GOD BLESS YOU !
Saw a bumper sticker. "The Hippies were right!" Loved the comment about circle madness. Read all of this guys books. So much to admire and only hope to emulate.
I saw that Shelter book when I was a kid. I've built my own house and cabin and my own masonry stove and soon I will build a kiln where I can produce my own cement. Now there's a plan to make maybe 50 campground buildings in the Philippines, using mahogany, bamboo, sand clay and straw along with homemade cements and stuccos made from on-site limestone. I didn't really follow anything specific from the books and when I was 10 in 1974 I determined the domes were really dumb idea because I had built stuff with my dad always square or rectangular. But books like his were very instructive on what was possible, especially for those raised in the city, without a father with the building experience. There's nothing new Under the Sun. Simple uncomplicated buildings done well, are much better than super complicated things, especially for beginners. I'm a long way from being a beginner and I still have no desire to build some ridiculous McMansion with 20 different roof lines. I like materials that require no plastic and that are breathable. If I were doing it in North America it would be hempcrete. Doing the same thing in my tropical environment where I have on site rice husk and coconut waste, the same process using homemade calcium hydroxide, can be done. I don't think the majority give enough thought to using on-site materials.
I live in Marin and absolutely love hearing stories like this!! He's such a rad dude. I would love to longboard with him! As a 30 year old who feels "too old" for skating/long boarding, sometimes this makes me feel great!
Lloyd is such an inspiring character. I've been a fan ever since listening to a conversation between and Chris Ryan about a decade ago. If I have even a fraction of his type of energy as I age, I'll be happy.. Really sad to hear about Leslie, also. Condolences Lloyd.
Recognize this hill right away. Good to see bits of home on this channel. I’ve skated down this hill many times. Beautiful place, beautiful home, beautiful lifestyle
Love this guy's energy and aspire to be like him in my old age. One criticism about the figures he quotes though, you have to take into account inflation. 3k for septic in 1975 is equivalent to 18k today, average wage and cost of living were different as well, all of these things affect how sums of money "feel". There's still a huge disparity in costs of building and permitting now -> then, but it's good to stand on equal(ish) ground when discussing figures.
Thank you for sharing this. Lloyd has been an inspiration ever since I found his Builders of the Pacific Coast book randomly in B+N. Amazing how his 1/2 acre looks much bigger when designed with thought.

Watching this video feels like I’m hanging out with the coolest, wisest, most chilled-out old uncle, that has ever walked this green earth. I am a long time fan of Lloyd Kahn, and Kirsten Dirksen, and this video is one of those I’ll come back to again and again. Lloyds work has been inspirational for me while on my own path to build a steady and sustainable life for myself. We can all learn something from this guy. Cheers to you Lloyd. You friggen rock man🫡
Thanks for the comment. We hope to continue to visit with Lloyd as well.
This was a real origin story. I look forward to all your episodes but really appreciate the ones from the old timers who lived lives in their homes. Happy travels in your future episodes.
Lloyd is a blessing for so many of us that walked that path, his work with Stuart Brand and the Whole Earth catalog became a library of information for us all on our journey, thank you so much for sharing his life with us all, I love your work very much!🙏💫
Thank you Kirsten, Lloyd is an absolute treasure.
Great tip on if you want to start something, just start doing. That's how I got started too. Wanted chickens but didn't want to spend $1000 at TSC on a small crappy coop. So I bought a drill and built something. Twelve years later I'm building my own house
Oh wow. I remember the original video. Sorry to hear his wife passed but glad to hear that Lloyd is still going strong.
🤗 THANKS KIRSTEN FOR SHARING LLOYD’s ADVENTURESOME LIFE 😎💚💚💚
You have accomplished a lot Sir👍.
Sorry for the loss of your wife😢.
Your very talented!
JO JO IN VT 💞
Brilliant video and content. My fav so far. Thanks for keeping everyone inspired!
What a wonderful interview, Kirsten - I´d have loved it to be much longer! Lloyd is a legend and just as inspiring as his books are.
And I absolutely love that kitchen, nails and all! 😀
Wow! Variety & Maximizing Movement in alignment with home grown foods, meaningful work and make- do attitude are keys to long lifè ❤
My great grandparents and then grandparents used to live in Bolinas and I loved visiting them. It is a beautiful magical place. I love this
Right here : is where we don't want to discard legacy, experience and knowledge !.....
👍 Rock on 🙂.
Impressive!
Wonderful man but we would all like to go back in time and know what we know now. Bless you Lloyd! Thanks for sharing!
I grew up in southern CA. I'm 67 and this just brings me back to the 60s and 70s. I even have the whole earth catalog! Loved this video
Keep Moving Keep trying new things and listen to your body. Activity is great
WOW, thanks so much for bringing this inspiring man once again to the world!
BRAVO!!
What a genuinely cool guy, so humble and wise. Thank you so much for yet another inspirational video!
Thank you so much for making and posting this video! Lloyd is absolutely amazing! Love him and his work and his books. Really great.
Lloyd is my hero! 89! Absolutely amazing. And the Versaclimber is an amazing workout. Further proof he’s a genius 😁
Lloyd is an inspiration & is the same age as my father who is in a skilled nursing home & can't walk. WOW! Many blessings to him.
This guy is awesome ! His attitude and physical ability gives me hope and energy. Now I want to get up every morning and get going to do more than sitting around waiting to die ! Thank you for this video ! You are helping so many of us old timers to a better healthier and longer life. GOD BLESS YOU !
Kirsten and team thank you for keeping architecture a living experience. Its a joy when you post another dreamers dream.
Saw a bumper sticker.
"The Hippies were right!"
Loved the comment about circle madness.
Most weeks I'm here for interesting or unique homes. This week it's all about an ... INTERESTING LIFE LED.
What an amazing attitude. His curiosity is undiminished over the years.
At 62 this gives me inspiration. I’m still doing everything I was doing 30 years ago, maybe a little slower. Keep going!
One of my heroes. Thanks for catching him and getting the story.
My twin in so many ways. Living life as it comes making the best of every moment...
I've read all the books I can find that Lloyd has published , he is just so inspirational on all levels.
Lloyd - you're a huge inspiration to many people. Thank you for sharing such great information through the years!
Recognize this hill right away. Good to see bits of home on this channel. I’ve skated down this hill many times. Beautiful place, beautiful home, beautiful lifestyle
Lloyds property looks amazing in the drone shot! I've followed him since I was a kid. I love his shelter books.
Keep the Lloyd vids coming! So much knowledge to share
Lloyd, You're an awesome human being! Thank you for your inspiration!
Thank you for sharing this. Lloyd has been an inspiration ever since I found his Builders of the Pacific Coast book randomly in B+N. Amazing how his 1/2 acre looks much bigger when designed with thought.
What an inspiration. I read him in the whole Earth catalog back in 1971.
