I understand why you used "the west" to refer mostly to the USA, but i feel it's a bit unfair to undersell the absolutely massive success Sakura had across latin america.

Oh man, I remember watching Sakura Cardcaptor back in Cartoon Network Latin America when it came out back in the year 2000. Thank God the dub was pretty faithful to the original Japanese, not to mention how great the dub voice acting was

Not even about just this show, but any with an initial botched US release, a perfect example
is Saint Seiya, did just fine all over here (Latin America) but in the US, completely bunged up
I will say, the Bowling For Soup cover of I Ran (So Far Away) weirdly fits, or at least is good OP music

    • @pablocasas5906

@@RadikAlice honestly, I don't think Saint Seiya would've worked in the U.S. like Dragon Ball did, even if it came earlier like it did in Europe and Latin America, I think the main problem is that the series could get pretty violent, and I know that Dragon Ball can get pretty violent as well, but in DBZ most of the enemies are non-human like Freezer, Cell and Majin Buu, Saint Seiya it's just below Fist of the North Star levels. I don't know how could they adapted something like the the battle between Shiryu and Deathmask for U.S. kids audiences. And that's without mentioning all the religious references
But it seems Toei and Bandai wanted Saint Seiya to become a success in the U.S., that's why they produced those pilots for a live-action adaptation (StarStorm) and a cartoon version (Guardians of the Cosmos) in the 90s

Same, bl material never did anything for me because to me it felt so unrealistic like “I know this isn’t how men talk including gay me” and I’m sure a lot of women feel the same about yuri but Touya felt so real. He’s so emotionally responses and yet it doesn’t feel unbelievable. I used that scene with Sakura and Clow Reed as the opening because as corny as it is, clow Read saying “the past is gone there is only the future. Winter is gone and now it’s a new spring” genuinely helped me get over some personal issues I was dealing with. Glad you enjoyed it.

I never thought of CCS as being a manga with loli/shota themes. It feels strange for me to think of it that way since I was only a couple years older than the characters when I was introduced to it, and there's no sexual content to speak of. Would not have expected it to have a large adult audience, but I guess in hindsight I can see it.

Unfortunately, sumo wrestling does have its trouble for time budget, since you can never truly predict how long a bout may take. Especially on the last day, where if you have to have a playoff or even a 3-way playoff, you could end up going way over time. Also, sumo wrestlers are considered holy, and a yokozuna is considered next to divine. The ritual performed during sumo wrestling is supposed to ward off bad spirits and even bring good harvests etc. So saying that Musashimaru had an "evil spirit" is very odd.

I have to admit your thumbnail and title made me watch because of Musashimaru, as I am ethnic Japanese and, more relevantly, from Hawaii. Fun fact: in the 1990s, the three biggest champion sumo were all from Hawaii and were not ethnic Japanese: Musashimaru (actually Fiamalu Penitai, ethnic Samoan), Akebono (actually Chad Rowan), and Konishiki (actually Saleva'a Fuauli Atisano'e, ethnically Samoan). 🙂

Sakura was a pretty big deal in Japan, Sakura herself was the number 1 character in '99 and 2000 in the magazine Animage
I'd say it was truly a big hit in Latin America, pretty close to Sailor Moon. I found a UA-cam video from an anime and comic convention that took place in Argentina in the year 2001 and there were plenty of girls cosplaying as Sakura, there were even people cosplaying as Syaoran and Meiling as well.
I think the Latin American dub also played a part on its popularity, Sakura was voiced by Cristina Hernández who had already voiced Chibi-moon and Blossom from PPG, she made a great job voicing Sakura

    • @irrespondible
      @irrespondible Рік тому +3

Well... Cardcaptors was a victim of the "Saban-ic dubbing". While the dub was made by Nelvana, Kids'WB re-cut the dubbed series, making it so only 1/2 of the episodes reached the US. Hell, they made the series start with Syaoran's arrival in the story, and they did their best to sell it as a team of Card Captors (Syaoran, Sakura and Meilin), likely because they weren't confident an anime series focused on a female audience would work as well.

Out of the many people that came and went on the forums there were only ever 4 people at most that claimed to be big fans of it.

Back in my day, broadcasters used PDC (Programme Delivery Control). A signal is sent when a programme starts; a VCR programmed for that programme time looks out for this signal and doesn't start recording until the signal is received; another signal is transmitted after the programme ends. (I don't think that PDC survived the digital switchover.)

Uraz Huerta also made a great job as Syaoran, especially since he was around the same age as his character, it made it sound very natural.
Sakura was a huge success in Latin America, I remember seeing a news report of one of the first anime conventions that took place in Argentina in the year 2001 and there were plenty of girls cosplaying as Sakura.

But either way glad you talked about this show. Just finished right now. Absolutely beautiful.

When I watch an American discussing classic anime they almost never fail to mention how much the dub sucked. I always thought people who preferred subs over dubs were otaku purists but I'm starting to think American dubs really were that bad, and the sentiment persisted over the years. I can assure you in Europe we had no troubles.

I'm not an native English speaker, but I find it difficult to listen to their anime dubs, I grew up watching lots of of dubs in Neutral Spanish, and not just anime but also cartoons, live-action movies and TV shows, and those made in Mexico were always pretty good, and modern dubs are great as well.
I don't know if part of the problem is that Americans (or Canadians) weren't very accustomed to dubbing foreign media, I tend to notice that old anime English dubs tended to sound very unnatural, lots of exaggerated voices. Then there's the fact that for many years many of the most popular anime dubbed into English were censored or had changes to appeal to Americans, something that didn't happen in other countries. Using Sakura as an example, the Latin American dub kept the relationship between Touya and Yukito intact, and that dub was made 20 years ago.
The only English dubs of Japanese media I kind of enjoy are RPGs like Final Fantasy or Persona, partially because, except for Nintendo games, most Japanese games aren't translated/dubbed into Spanish. Though Final Fantasy XVI will be receiving a Neutral Spanish dub.

I remember watching Cardcaptors back in the day and I could always feel something was off. When I finally got to watch the sub, I couldn't believe how much was taken out of context. As for the relationships, the only one I didn't like is Rika's. Even though a lot of other characters have bigger age differences (like Sakura's dad and mom), they were both old enough to consent. In the case of Sakura and Syaoran both liking Yukito, it's more of a crush. It's not uncommon for someone growing up to have a crush someone older and grow out of it.

CCS takes place in an idealized world where love is magic, non-sexual, and simple. In this setting, Rika being in love with her teacher is innocent and only about the feelings of the characters. Her teacher isn't grooming her because such a thing doesn't exist in that world. In the context of the show/manga, it's just another form of love. When it's taken out of that context obviously it is very problematic, but viewing it out of context defeats the purpose.

Hi. I think the statement "(...) very strong otaku following which is attributed to the inclussion of moe, lolicon, (...) elements", while not strange, may generate some misunderstandings about the true nature of the events. While it is undeniable that Sakura has a special place within the loli-moe iconography, it is easy to glimpse that such a place is not the main reason behind her constitution as a character and the story she stars in. Rather, I am sure that such popularity is an aftereffect, product of the admiration that in the audience specialized in anime consumption produced a show of marked excellence and originality in terms of narrative, visuals, musicals, etc. To say that Cardcaptor Sakura "includes lolicon content" may generate the idea that the show is based on content specifically designed to satisfy a certain fantasy of otaku consumption. I think that beyond the freedom with which the consumers' fantasy moves, it is easy to judge when a show makes evident the appeal to certain fantasies and consumption, and when it does not; I think the case of CCS is not that of Kodomo no Jikan, to give a grotesque example but that helps to understand the difference.
That said, the video is excellent as is all the content you upload. Keep on!
    Hugs!
